The earlier buses with thick doglegs and flat rear wheel lips are a bit tougher to fit tires. Those of us running lowered buses (especially earlier than '62) will have fitment "fun." It's best to stay stock height, rides better, steers better, mpg better. Only pro is wind stability 😅. Thank You Mike! Almost makes me want to go back to stock height (Almost) 😉
if you dont mind the meat look they are really the best option to me. looking for a steering dampener upgrade. but the way they are it is pretty nice IMO.
@@markdorman320 yea these are just over 100 bucks. I did put some others on the amazon link on there and they are less some have mud terrain which might get some noise.
Just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I am getting back into aircooled again and it's been about 20yrs and I forgot quite a bit. And learned much more as well. But one question, I never seen anyone put RTV on the case halves, is this just personal preference or did my dad not tell me the full story? lol The engine build episode and what size to build def helped me pick what i want to build and it is much cheaper how you have suggested. (have not built one since 1999) lol
I am about to chose tires for my 66. I have found some early wide 5s/ 15 inch and still have the original 14s My question is -- would you rather have 14s with fat tires or 15s with a bit smaller tire. Then there is the "no spare" people because , I cannot remember the last time I had a flat. However I plan to get a little remote so personally be carrying. What is your opinion. Thanks. glad to see a newer channel.
14s with this size gives you the best gear ratio. IMO. There are less options for the 15s.....you can go 205 75 15 which is close but not quite as big as these. Taller tires help the freeway RPM problems.
@@Mikefngarage Ok, thanks. Mine currently have 5.60 15 bias ply tires so I wasn’t quite sure what matched that best. Bias ply is to expensive to keep that look for mine.
@@carsman248 The radials handle much better too. or if you want to have the best of both worlds there is always Autobahn tires. Radials that totally look like bias ply. Look on the samba. On the internet they are way more expensive. but someone sells them on there for less. They are more than the STD radials though.
no metric compare only 27 8.5 14. they are radials and heavy side wall. like D rated. JK tires are good if they make this size. I put a link in the description these are called Tornell really hard to find them check the link. just over 100 each. all the others are almost double that.
yea loose a bit of power have a little less RPM which is the biggest problem IMO. too many RPMs make it loud in the bus and harder on the engine at cruise speed.

Running General Grabbers in the same size on my 65 Deluxe , love them!!!
Thanks Mike
Thank you,you answered so many questions I had about tire size and how they work on my bus
No problem!

Hey Mike, I need new tires for my bug. Should I use 165/80R15 or 155/80R15? Want as close to stock look.
stock is 165....

What brand? JKTyre? Not in the title. Even the cheap tire guys want 25 bucks a tire to install!!! What MM size is it? 245/75/14?
$25 for install and balancing per tire seems like a good deal.

not long ago I was paying 40 for mount and balance. now 100....
@@seanrigmaiden3887 most of them also cant balance them and charge you for it
…for a 69 baywindow, stock transmission,..which tire do u recommend?
Taller means more wind resistance.😮
