    F mix & Eb lydian are the same thing starting on different notes. It's all part of Bb major. You could also use G minor, A locrian, C dorian, D phrygian. String them all together & you'll be able to run all around the fret board - just be aware of the chord changes underneath.

    good to know. I tried to do Hood, but its either too quite in parts or its too hard to find a good chunk to loop

    The progression does start on an Eb major7 and then goes to F7, so you could look at it as an Eb lydian but I think because the feel of the progression seems to pull harder towards the F as a focus he labeled it F mixo. I'd probably agree with that, though I see your point

    Well you can either play the track and your solo and record it through a mic to audacity or something and post it, or if you use garage band/guitar rig, you could do something similar and post it

    what determines what mode a song is "in"? In this you can play f mix c dorian g aeolian eb lydian etc so how do you know which to call it?

    I have been playing both the eb lydian and the f mixolydian, intermittently flashing a few cm sweep arpeggios and cm pentatonic which sounds ok to me but i am no theorist

    you can use all modes in the same scale. A bit of variety and still sounds good try C myxolidian or F locrian

    Lydian is center. The #4 is the most prominent tonal quality. Otherwise, It’s like trying to say it’s not green because I can use yellow and blue

    Thanks for posting this, but once and for all, allow me to interject and state that beyond whether it's this mode or that (it's Eb Lydian, period), consider that the key, aka tonality is Eb. ANY notes you play, whether diatonic or not (and there are 12 of them) will be heard as relating to the tonality of Eb. So, if you play an E natural technically it's outside of the mode and will sound "wrong", but you should still be able to hear it as the b2 degree.

    It's in the key of Bb Major. It doesn't actually make any sense to ascribe a particular mode to this track, because it alternates between Eb Lydian and F Mixolydian. It's not really modal. Even trey plays licks in both Eb Lydian and F mixolydian during this jam. That being said, if you don't have any experience with chord-scale soloing, you can do a lot worse than just playing Lydian over it. EDIT: corrected "D mixolydian to F mixolydian".

    • @gagealbright
      @gagealbright Рік тому +1

  • @theSonsofSoil

    The way I see it, the best label is lydian, in fact the correct label is lydian.
    My issue with labeling it mixolydian is that the first chord is a Eb, that 100% suggests lydian, so anyone with knowledge understands this, it's basic thoery. For the newcomer though, it's not a very academic way to suggest it's mixolydian over lydian, because, the fact is, in terms of coming into the jam, the one beat starts with Eb. Lydian. Of course this is improv, Trey actually plays several modes so in that sense, so suggest any one mode is kind of...well. and kind of worse, beyond that, to suggest mixolydian when it starts on Eb is just not very intelligent from any point of view really. Not trying to be a dick, but trey plays in lydian, mixo lydian, and several more quite often to build tension, and once again, at it's base, the chord progression of the jam suggests it's lydian, that's really not arguable.
    Listen to mike and fish, what progression and notes is mike playing relative to fish's one beat. again, this is improv, it changes, not so much with the Reba jam but still, mike a fish tend to stick closer to home than Trey. Making sense, it's a guitar driven jam, Trey can change modes while mike stays,. relatively, in one.

      Neither the first beat of a bar, nor the first chord of a two chord vamp, determines what mode a track is in. If either of the two chords is to sound like the 'home' or 'root' chord, it is the SECOND chord. And the scale which fits that chord best is F Mixolydian. While you are right that even over most modal tracks the player has to use more than one mode for each chord (to really outline the dominating mode) I totally agree with the uploader in labelling this F Mixolydian. The F sound like 'home' and the scale of choice for that chord is Mixo.

    • @theSonsofSoil
      @theSonsofSoil 10 років тому

      yonkeythedonkey If you want to play it like that, just suggest to everyone it's A# major. And F sounds closer to home because mixo is closer to natural major than lydian to most ears.
      My point was that when you take the progression for what it is, outside of any jam in particular, it's suggesting Eb lydian. I do agree it seems that Phish in particular does tend to lean towards the F, but not always, meaning it's back to the basic progression. Eb-F, I still have to stay with Eb.
      My other quandary being that they end on an Eb as well. But I suppose to you that doesn't matter either.

    • @matthewshine3643
      @matthewshine3643 10 років тому

      yonkeythedonkey Reba is a classic example of the lydian mode. Why you might ask? Well lets take the Eb to F major vamp. The chords that are played are Eb to F major. In a normal progression it should be Eb to F minor. However, since we are playing F major instead which contains the #4 of Eb it becomes lydian. The chords being played determine modality

      There are a thousand ways to skin a cat. Its all Bb major no matter how you look at it. Hell you could say its in A locrian or C dorian. The only thing you should be concerned with is not landing on the Ab note. F mixolydian and Eb lydian are the same thing.

    • @tomsutton964
      @tomsutton964 9 років тому

      ^^^ Agreed ... this is 100% F Mixolydian. You can't say that something is in a certain mode based on the first chord. Take a basic 2 / 5 / 1 progression for jazz ... a 2 / 5 / 1 in C Major would start with some sort of D minor chord ... you would be wrong to say it is in D Dorian.
