This is great. However, The video does not respond or at least i did not find an answer to my most important questions. Can this be run fully local? I mean if the company ends the support for the app, can i still use this in full and access all the settings? Also is there a need for a subscription? Both questions are complete showstoppers to any of my smart home gadgets excluding nabucasa which i gladly pay to get that excellent environment. And BTW the description links are all wrong. The WIFI International link takes you to EUFY doorbell which is battery powered. It seem to me that if i dont plan to use the chime unit it does not matter if i choose the UK unit or International unit? I cant tell the difference in amazon as this fact is not mentioned. The only hint is the shape of the chime unit plug which does not even show on the pictures too well.

Very complete video. A couple things in case people ask in the comments:
The indoor chime is RF433, so if you have an RF bridge you can easily pick up the signal from the doorbell to the chime if you want to use it in automations (it is slightly faster than using the HA doorbell ring sensor).
When using the Reolink doorbell with blue iris you MUST uncheck the "Send RTSP Keep Alives" box, otherwise the video feed will reset every 30 seconds. I've had loads of people tell me "this doorbell sucks with blue iris, you are a paid shill" because they decided to check that box.

I’m using the Reolink video doorbell and love it. This video is fair but only glosses over the #1 use-case for this doorbell: POE isn’t just about powering the device. It’s about how the data feed is communicated to your hub.
I know this UA-cam channel focuses on secures virtual networks so it makes sense that Wifi cybersecurity isn’t as much of a hot button topic, but the reality is that it’s possible to build an entirely wifi-free smarthome in Zigbee and Z-Wave with the exception of video and audio feeds (due to bandwidth). POE offers a solution to this challenge with camera feeds.
The problem is that, you’re correct, doorbells are embarrassingly behind the curve and there are almost zero POE options out there. After doing a lot of research, I chose Reolink for all of my cameras and I now have POE 24/7 surveillance of my home without sending my camera feeds to the cloud. Given most homes already have some form of wiring at the doorbell, I’m shocked that there aren’t more Poe doorbell options, but there really are not. At least today.

The jumper wire is for 2 reasons: 1 the camera does not have a small backup battery to power the camera while the button is pressed. pushing the button completes the circuit when the chime rings, and any doorbell cameras will disconnect if they dont have a backup battery/capacitor to keep it powered. the reolilnk could go offline if someone rings the back door doorbell.
the 2nd reason, when you power a device, like a camera on the doorbell power, it puts a constant load on the coils in the chime box. they can burn out with constant power going through for a couple years.

Agreed, wired chime compatibility is the only feature that's really missing from this doorbell. For HA users, it's pretty easy to add a Shelly relay to your doorbell chime and trigger it with an automation via the Reolink integration, but that's an extra $20 we shouldn't have to spend. Not a deal breaker for me at this price point though, especially when it's $20 off on Amazon right now anyway.

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

3:27 the reason you have to "short out" is because the door bell requires a direct connection from the transformer. If you connect it to the existing bell button only and don't short out the mechanical chime, you will be receiving the supply via the bell solinoid. That will reduce the available current from the transformer. It will also constantly energise the solenoid.

I suspect the reolink discovery protocol is like Bosch IP cameras. If so, there is a workaround. The two switch commands are "Ip helper" and "ip directed broadcast." IP helper is used to forward broadcast packets from one VLAN to another. It is commonly used to forward dhcp requests to a single server across a multi-vlan site. You will have to know the port number the reolink camera is broadcasting on for discovery. The directed broadcast command is used to allow the ip helper to broadcast into the target vlan where the NVR lives. It is a security risk, so turn it off once you're done. It might also be unnecessary if the nvr will accept the discovery message as unicast. You may have to have two helpers, one in each vlan. One handles the discovery message from the camera and another handles the response from the nvr.

I am using simply an Aqara single button as my doorbell. I screwed the cap of the battery compartment to the wall. Works obviously perfect with home assistant.
When someone rings my doorbell, my home assistant server play a mp3 soundfile to one or more speakers in the house.
    home assistant server
I consider and looking for a small WiFi camera that I can integrate to the front door or wall. Theft proof and discreet.
Next week I will add a little microphone and tiny speaker to my front door.
The advantage could be to not to be depending one an device that has all in one. Which gives you more flexibility with future replacements or adjustments. It’s possibly cheaper too:
    - The Aqara button is about
    €12.
    - A mic + speaker can be even
    less if you wish.
    - Behind the door you could
    use a raspberry pi or
    something like that as audio
    server that runs Volumio-
    audio or MoodeAudio. But
    have AirPlay 2 on board.
    Moode supports Bluetooth
too. Volumio too but after a
    Payment. But Volumio has a
    home assistant integration.
    Both are great, currently I
    preference Moode audio.
Airplay works best for me. I
Use it all over my house. It’s
a bit more flexible when the
    audio source changes
    Playing music, a doorbel or
    an alarming sound.
    best in my opinion
Another advantage is that you can choose the best suitable spot for each function. For example: in my case I have the Aqara button on the (preferred) right side of the front door. But, that would be too windy to record through a microphone. So I probably will put the small speaker and microphone a bit above my door.
For security preference I want to place a future camera on the left side of the door. Besides, in that way I have better view of the person(s) at the door.
So yeah, I’m not so much a fan of the idea that all of the functions (door bell button, speaker, microphone and camera) in a single device.
Okay enough for me now. Maybe it helps others in their situation.

Great video Lewis, I've seen a couple of other channels cover it and to be honest I thought you already had too! :)
For me, the Reolink is definitely the one I'll go for since HA integration and the ability to use RTSP are the most important features.
One thing noone seems to talk about with these doorbells (and cameras that integrate speakers) is that whilst you may be able to get the video stream, there doesn't seem to be a way to use the 2-way talk outside of the manufacturers app. I'd love to be able to use the doorbell directly via HA too (though I understand it might be related to limitations in HA at the moment?)
I think this could be a huge security benefit when you're not home. Imagine someone sneaking around your house and suddenly the motion detection triggers a HA routine that plays audio out of the camera's speaker - "Oi, get off my lawn!" (or better yet, in the middle of the night - "Hey... over here!" whispered from one side of the garden then a few minutes later the same thing from over by the bushes - think the scene from Predator when it's sitting in a tree watching them! Scare them off your property BEFORE they do any damage). Could be fun to play spooky music when someone comes to the door around halloween too ;)
OK this post has rambled on a bit long, but maybe you're the right man to figure out a way to get HA to use the mic and speaker on those devices, even if it means adding some extra integration magic?

While the user should have choice, in this case, I don't see the same subnet limitation as that big of deal. Your NVR camera network/VLAN should ideally be dedicated for your cameras anyway. Then use a separate NIC or virtual NIC for management traffic on the NVR (assuming it's capable of that, I DIY with Frigate).
The "just connect it to the same L2 network as the NVR" answer may seem lazy from Reolink, but they're gearing you toward better configuration. If your switch supports it, no reason to really separate cameras on different VLANs if everything's wired, just use one NVR VLAN, set a L2 firewall (client device isolation), make a L2 firewall exception for the cameras to talk to the NVR but not to each other, and use another NIC on the NVR for management

    • @DrF00bar

It sounds like they're using some sort of broadcast announcement for the discovery, so it might not be a matter of allowing a firewall rule if the broadcast doesn't get routed. Maybe a Broadcaster Helper would work. I think generally having any ethernet port that is outside your house in a different VLAN from storage or management networks is a good idea, and then only allow the specific ports through that are needed for the video/audio. Thus I'd prefer support for different networks, but I don't think it is deal-breaking for me. Obviously most home users aren't going to bother with (or even know about) multiple VLANs, but generally I think having more flexibility in how you configure things would be a good thing.

Yeah.... This device is a bit of a mess.. I literally bought it based on the track record of @EverythingSmartHome. In this review the obvious issue is not highlighted.
As a camera in the Reolink ecosphere, It's great, except that it overheats, then stops working. Not sure if this is fixable.
As a doorbell..... On the plus side there's good potential for integration into Home Asisstant, but it lacks basic doorbell features such as a incoming video call notification like most doorbells do. Instead it uses a unobtrusive notification that is missed super easily. Workaround using HA for a "better" notificationare not great either, so not a plausible alternative
Biggest issue is Reolink's lack of adressing these issues timeously. Over promising and under delivering is a big issue.
They have done this product a huge dis-service. Until resolved, I have re-installed my old RING doorbell.. PITY.

Just FYI, for those of us with VLANed networks, there is an option. Before that, good for you. IoT devises SHOULD be segregated for your safety.
So, the wifi doorbell isn't going to reliably work with your NVR, but the POE version works great. I have mine installed with the CAT5e running to the back of the NVR with is on it's own subnet. Since the NVR acts like a router creating its own basic network, and then passes that traffic to the rest of your network (which can be VLANed) it gives the best of both. That cable run can be a beast, but after that, it just works.
