This video put my opinion of ASUS in a completely different galaxy from where it had been previously. I've gotta say, it's pretty freaking cool of them.
It’s your fault for listening to the internet. As someone who works in tech, 99% of problems are human error. Also, even the best made mass production items have the occasional flaw. I’ve been building PCs for 25 years and never strayed away from ASUS. They’ve always been just fine.
Everything’s a Steam Machine! Wonder how fully Valve is gonna eat Microsoft’s lunch with steamOS? Every loss is MS’s own fault because they refused to optimize Windows for handhelds (or just fork the Xbox OS). Classic Blockbuster replay.
That’s just it: it isn’t about the Steam Deck any more. With every handheld that goes out potentially being a platform for steamOS, Valve continues to grow without putting in the money associated with hardware development. There was a time when people would throw Linux on an old machine to squeeze a few more years of use out of it. But not after steamOS. We’re not far from seeing old hardware just becoming dedicated Steam Machines. And sure, steamOS is _technically_ still Linux but it’s a much more focused product that continues to generate revenue for Valve. I’m someone who gamed almost exclusively on the original Xbox back in its day and I really hope the rumored Xbox handheld succeeds. Innovation dies without competition, after all. But they’ve got an uphill battle after Microsoft devalued their own hardware so thoroughly with the “Everything’s an Xbox,” campaign. The Steam Deck is dead. Long live the Steam Deck!
@stlwill idk I use windows on all of these Z13 since the 1st iteration and it's extremely well optimised. Remember, they make their own surface :D so they literally streamline windows for it. Not sure what you're on about.
I frame-by-frame analyzed a segment of the Cyberpunk 2077 test video and I noticed almost no duplicate frames. This means that the game is running at a frame rate close to 60, or even higher
What I want to see is this chip in a mini PC in a nice form factor for going under my TV. From what I can tell this should give a PC with the approximate power of a PS5 which would be sweet for couch gaming
These new chips coming out with valve finally moving on steam os tells me one thing. It’s time, we’re ready, the tech has caught up to do it without INSANE game developer optimization
@@smashpro1 My napkin maths put the processing power about the same as the PS5 for the top spec chip. For the GPU. Bear in mind that a mini pc would have less thermal constraints than a tablet.
you would need an entirely new motherboard and chipset. these APU's use quad channel memory, current AM5 only has dual channel. You would be crippling the memory/bandwidth and therefore crippling the APU's performance.
That's amazing dude. On your way to becoming a linux expert! I'm actually suprised it worked that flawlessly. Not for nothing, but the credit for that goes to AMD. Asus just built a machine with their chip, something any mfg could do, really. Lenovo, MSI, etc...
@ idk switch 2 will rely on up scaling for all its games so it’s just something we accept. Ie Xbox one x and ps4 pro never did 4k, just up scales 1800p most of the time using checkerboarding, objectively worse than upscaling

Steam OS is going to be a great entry point for so many people but you really don't have to wait for it to game on linux. There are a few gaming distros that work very well. I decided 4 weeks ago to start using linux and there has not been a ton of fuss. I've actually had more trouble with windows the past month than linux. PikaOS has been working wonderfully for me. Most games run under whatever proton layer you choose. I really think this is a great time to explore linux, especially if you have a spare drive. I recommend keeping a drive with windows until you know for sure and to browse youtube for some resources. Don't be afraid to try a few distros and different desktop environments (kde vs gnome etc) until you find what works for you. Some are more beginner friendly than others.
I agree. I'm thinking maybe a 3d printed adapter that will allow either the Legion Go 2 controllers or new larger switch 2 controllers could be a possible solution.
I fell that it's a missed opportunity to use Gnome in this case. I always imagined Gnome to be better on tablets and small screen laptops. For a desktop, KDE runs circles around Gnome.
I just turned my old Surface Pro 5 into a PS5 Pro level gaming console. PopOS with Boosteroid set to auto launch on boot in fullscreen. It's hooked to my TV and runs like a charm, with full controller support as well as kbm. 🙂
@Luke357 A useless device that couldn't even handle basic Windows tasks, now running perfectly smooth with a proper OS, and I'm playing Indiana Jones at max settings on it. That's the beauty of cloud gaming, if it's configured properly. 🤓
@@Alex-nk8bw The Surface Pro 5 can handle Windows pretty well. I have the Dell Latitude clone with a 7th gen CPU and it runs Windows 11 great. I have a WiFi 6 card I added aftermarket and I have done some In home streaming and it works well. However, I would never call it a gaming device because all it does is just stream video from the host.
@@Luke357 the Surface Pro 5 still has a better display than most modern devices, it's still nothing short of stunning. But its dual core i5 low power CPU is terrible. Not only did Microsoft themselves drop support, you can't even call the 7300U's Windows 11 performance acceptable. Even fully debloated, it's painful to see it struggling with basic tasks like web browsing. Pop OS in the other hand is lightweight enough to make it usable again, and believe me, fully raytraced modern games look amazing when streamed on that screen. You should give it a try. 🙂
@Alex-nk8bw The i5 7300U is more than enough for Windows. My Dell Surface clone has an i5 7200U. With debloated Windows 11 it runs fine I just have to let it update when I'm not using it. You are right about games looking good on Surface screens. I had a Surface 3 and that screen was very nice. My Dell is nice but the Surfaces have better screens.
I’d prefer something at ~10,11 inches for portability and using on plane table trays as well as a more efficient chip and larger battery. May have to settle for the legion go 2 running steam os/bazzite and travel with a slimmer sn30 controller in my carryon. The packed in controllers and my steam deck have too much bulk to comfortably fit in my shoulders bag.
AC Valhalla showed 55 fps avg, 62 max at 1600p, which is about 61 fps avg, 69 fps max at 1440p, which is performance that is in between an RTX 3060 and an RTX 3060 ti. Pretty good for a mobile chip.
What I do is I just have my hotspot connect to my tablet as long as the phone sees the tablet as a BT device. (Ideally you would also want a parameter to disable this function when your phone is connected to WiFi.) and it works beautifully. I have a 20GB cap on my hotspot but I usually only need the connection for cloud syncing or the occasional web search.
I'm really excited about this device and the ultrabooks that might use it moving forward. 13" is too small for me for gaming, would like something at least 15.6.
The Switch 2 inbuilt projector is said to be 1024 x 768 resolution, and is supposedly based on a Trixel 3, a German Austrian manufacture. Pronounced "tricel".
A strix halo mini pc would be killer just not at $2000 like this tablet. $999 seems fair depending how it compares to a mac mini $599 or mac studio base model which is $1999
@@Andorski Oh I know that. But at anything more and its just DOA for me as a mini pc when i can build something infinitely faster in an itx form factor. I want it as a living room steam machine so i don't need it that small but it would be nice. I see the ROG NUC with a discrete 4060 is $2000 with 1tb and 32GBs of ram. So i expect this to be that price too. Which makes it a fun product to talk about but not something I would spend money on.
Likewise. I would really like to see how it's numbers compare to my current desktop setup. I'd love to reclaim some space and simplify things. It SEEMS like it should be on par or better than a 7600xcpu/7600 discreet gpu, and I hope that turns out to be the case.
Leaked benchmarks have it outperforming a laptop RTX 4060, which is itself a decent bump over a *desktop* 3060. So if those numbers are true, VR performance should be pretty fantastic. My RTX 2070 laptop plays Alyx at medium-high settings at a comfortable framerate. Given Valve's partnership with AMD I'm sure they've known about this Radeon 8060S iGPU or the Strix Halo APU for some time. If this isn't already the chip that's going into their "Fremont" console, maybe it's at least enough of the generational leap they wanted, and a modified/customized version of it will make its way to a future Steam Deck 2. 45-120W TDP is way too much for a handheld, but if they can get anywhere near this kind of performance and visual quality on an 800p screen (instead of 1600p) for around 15-30W TDP, paired with a big enough battery should make for an awesome handheld.
Honestly, THANK YOU ASUS for letting him do this video This is the ultimate no compromise all in ome machine, I want to dual boot linux(for work) and windows(for gaming, (yea I know)) Waiting for the benchmarks 😭
Bazzite was really easy for me. I've had it about 2 weeks now. I didn't realize I could just install the steam deck image... only bad thing is I had to use terminial to auto mount my drives. Settings wouldn't stick in there auto-mount app Biggest issue (it'll be on anything) putting my passwords back in :D 5800x3d 6700xt Works great in game mode! Some games are weird/slow in desktop mode...but fine in game mode.
@monki_sudo It wouldn't stick after reboot! Ah interesting! Maybe I'll try the steam deck image already. It won't have this issue I don't think. Thank you!
Did you test using integrated gpu or was the external gpu plugged in? I like its portability, but am wondering how loud the fans are gonne get on games like elden ring while on integrated gpu
Thanks for this review @Nerdnest -- I wonder if this device is good for a Linux based daily driver -- all AMD devices generally are. If possible (and permitted by Asus) could you please install any major Linux distributions and share a review? You could always go for Fedora or Ubuntu -- but I can also recommend something like Endeavor OS which has a friendly GUI installer, while being based on Arch OS. This might be interesting as it would have the latest Linux kernel, and that means best compatibility for latest hardware. Thanks again!
I really wish this kind of APU's come to the Desktop market, sadly due to the AM5's limitations this is impossible May be AM6 ? or even 870m for Desktop would be great, a great Custom Steam machine HTPC gaming center
As long as it's under $3k, I'll probably get one. A device this small for both machine learning and gaming, AND it runs said games through linux without issues? It's a no brainer
The gameplay footage looks much smoother than the windows versions. As you say maybe that's the capture card. Did you notice any difference in fan speed/noise between bazzite and windows?
@@NerdNest yeah seems that way, from what I remember the stuttering was consistent across all games and scenes, you'd think it would change if it was the tablets performance. Were you capturing directly on the tablet or through an external capture card? Not that I have a clue how or if that would cause the stuttering 🤣
Record gameplay that is lower than 60 fps. Let users check each frame how many changes there are within that 60 frame container(or more to get rolling average). Benchmark score without telling numbers ;)
More laptop manufacturer's should have installed this chip in their premium products, but no we only get 2 options, what the hell is going on ... By premium meaning referring to the good old previous names of manufacturers laptops such as the spectre, xps, yoga 9 pro and book version line. They cost the premium price but as always come with garbage chips and gpu performances. The Halo chip would have brought back sense to those "top end" lines of laptops with price to match the performance without the gaming plastic aesthetic options.
4:54 BRO! Bill, Left click on taskbar; taskbar settings; taskbar behaviors; taskbar alignment: left! You're welcome. The amount of tech UA-camrs I see who don't know this baffles me (Russ too). If you enjoy having your Windows button be in the middle, fine. But god, I hate it, and change it whenever I install or reinstall Windows 11 on a new device. Windows trying to be a Mac is not good IMO. It is ugly.
Doom eternal framerate still looking pretty rough with totally maxed out settings and RT on. I'm sure with optimized settings doom eternal will max out the 180hz refresh rate.
it's great, but it's also a huge downfall, which doesn't make it future-proof because of a very simple and small thing, and this is the Thunderbolt 4 connection, which provides a maximum bandwidth of only 40 GB, which makes the new XG Mobile series completely useless and if you need the GPU power in docking mode, there is no concrete solution, because the power that could be used to the maximum via eGPU is near just as great as what the 395 processor itself is capable of. My opinion is that it turned out to be a great device , but I think it not worth buying it if it won't come into stores with minimum 1x Thunderbolt 5 connection
oh wow! I might as well skip any handheld gaming for now and save that money and pump it all into getting this ROG Flow Z13! I already has a Xbox controller , that will work I reckon,
The Bitlocker step is completely unnecessary. If you don't care about your Windows installation and plan to wipe it out anyway, the Bitlocker key that was on it is no longer relevant for anything.
I wondering, how it runs VR... and can it run it in Linux or in windows at least(for example Lone Echo 1 + 2). If it can - it would be Must Buy for me.

Very cool! Can’t wait for a Mini PC with this chip.
Likewise. I would really like to see how it's numbers compare to my current desktop setup. I'd love to reclaim some space and simplify things. It SEEMS like it should be on par or better than a 7600xcpu/7600 discreet gpu, and I hope that turns out to be the case.
I wonder if by the time Strix Halo miniPCs get released Valve announces codename Fremont.
There needs to be a finance option for this 2k is pretty hefty
Wonder how it would perform connected to a VR headset running something like Elite Dangerous or Alyx.
Honestly, THANK YOU ASUS for letting him do this video
This is the ultimate no compromise all in ome machine, I want to dual boot linux(for work) and windows(for gaming, (yea I know))
Waiting for the benchmarks 😭
Recording the screen was a great idea.
I think that's how I'll do it in the future when I can't show numbers
Strixs Halo was a sick name tho D:
Thanks much for the bazzite review on this new APU. Looks very promising.
This thing is going to be a beast on Linux :)
Bazzite was really easy for me. I've had it about 2 weeks now. I didn't realize I could just install the steam deck image...
only bad thing is I had to use terminial to auto mount my drives. Settings wouldn't stick in there auto-mount app
Biggest issue (it'll be on anything) putting my passwords back in :D
5800x3d
6700xt
Works great in game mode! Some games are weird/slow in desktop mode...but fine in game mode.
@monki_sudo It wouldn't stick after reboot!
Ah interesting! Maybe I'll try the steam deck image already. It won't have this issue I don't think.
Thank you!
FINALLY Strix point 🎉
Did you test using integrated gpu or was the external gpu plugged in?
I like its portability, but am wondering how loud the fans are gonne get on games like elden ring while on integrated gpu
I don't own an external GPU, I had an external hard drive plugged into it to transfer games over.
@NerdNest ah ok, just checking. How was the van noise while playing demanding games for you tho?
In Turbo mode, the fan is crazy loud
Is it compatible with lossless scaling and afmf2?
"AMD Ryzen AI MAX PLUS 395"? This is giving Sony's product naming skills a run for their money!
So I’d assume you can load a regular Linux distro on this and should just work?
When is the performance embargo lift on those new processors?
Honestly, I'm not sure if I can even share that.
Steam machine with steam os 3.6 and this chip will be awesome.
The numbers of nerds looking at strix halo with a side eye and just waiting for a budget laptop to launch with it is insane...😅😅😅
Will this have FSR4?
I really wish this kind of APU's come to the Desktop market, sadly due to the AM5's limitations this is impossible
May be AM6 ? or even 870m for Desktop would be great, a great Custom Steam machine HTPC gaming center
Thanks for this asus
Im waiting for a Minisforum V3 with this😂
How's Bazzite on sleeping with a game on? Does the Steam Deck do that as well?
As long as it's under $3k, I'll probably get one. A device this small for both machine learning and gaming, AND it runs said games through linux without issues? It's a no brainer
I would need dual ssd slot on the laptop that comes with this chip
The gameplay footage looks much smoother than the windows versions. As you say maybe that's the capture card. Did you notice any difference in fan speed/noise between bazzite and windows?
no, both fan speeds are loud
@NerdNest thanks 🙏 I guess it was wishful thinking that it would be quieter.
I think the gameplay looks smoother because of the way I shot it.
@@NerdNest yeah seems that way, from what I remember the stuttering was consistent across all games and scenes, you'd think it would change if it was the tablets performance. Were you capturing directly on the tablet or through an external capture card? Not that I have a clue how or if that would cause the stuttering 🤣
External capture card.
15:50 what is this song?

Does bazzite allow egpus? And specifically nvidia egpus?
Record gameplay that is lower than 60 fps. Let users check each frame how many changes there are within that 60 frame container(or more to get rolling average).
Benchmark score without telling numbers ;)
I didn't film at 120 FPS because I didn't want to break embargo without breaking embargo.
What is the fan noise of the device??
It's loud, I show it off in my Windows version of the video
@@NerdNestloud only in turbo? Or just in general? I’m gonna have to park like half those core lol
In Turbo very loud, in silent, its ..... silent. We discussed this on the latest episode of the Nerd Nest Podcast. Link in description
Great, now I need one.
18:45 - I stelf
I love this device but... it's not an oled screen....
More laptop manufacturer's should have installed this chip in their premium products, but no we only get 2 options, what the hell is going on
...
It is ugly.
I don't care where the button is, I don't use a mouse to use it.
yeah i will definitely keep the halo name to the cpu
Doom eternal framerate still looking pretty rough with totally maxed out settings and RT on.
I'm sure with optimized settings doom eternal will max out the 180hz refresh rate.
It was just the capture card screwing up apparently
The AMD APU name sounds like Monitor model or someone face-rolled a keyboard.
I was wondering when somebody was going to do this.
pretty sure this will be the chip of steam deck 2
Not unless you want 15-minute battery life.
it's great, but it's also a huge downfall, which doesn't make it future-proof because of a very simple and small thing, and this is the Thunderbolt 4 connection, which provides a maximum bandwidth of only 40 GB, which makes the new XG Mobile series completely useless and if you need the GPU power in docking mode, there is no concrete solution, because the power that could be used to the maximum via eGPU is near just as great as what the 395 processor itself is capable of.
My opinion is that it turned out to be a great device , but I think it not worth buying it if it won't come into stores with minimum 1x Thunderbolt 5 connection
Much smoother
oh wow! I might as well skip any handheld gaming for now and save that money and pump it all into getting this ROG Flow Z13! I already has a Xbox controller , that will work I reckon,
id love to know when it will be available in europe
I'm certain ASUS gave the greenlight to gage interest in releasing a steam version or else marketing materials and drivers to entice people to buy one
Yeah man, I wanna do it.
I just got 50 seconds of ads before this video
I don't know what that menas.
yeah Doom from the last video did not look good to me, this was much better
The Bitlocker step is completely unnecessary. If you don't care about your Windows installation and plan to wipe it out anyway, the Bitlocker key that was on it is no longer relevant for anything.
I wondering, how it runs VR... and can it run it in Linux or in windows at least(for example Lone Echo 1 + 2). If it can - it would be Must Buy for me.
Yes, I was look for this.
don't be shy, remove the charger and show us the performance.
The phawx has a video of games running in silent mode on battery. No FPS yet though since it’s under NDA til the release unit
What is the name of that cool metal song

elden ring gameplay was something
I couldn't remember how to play.
Looks good but I wanted an OLED screen.
