    At roughly 1600 sq. ft., this year’s best small home, designed by Anne Callender of Whipple-Callender Architects, is sure to spark debate about small-home design. This home shows that downsizing doesn’t have to come with sacrifices.

    The average new construction home in the US is 2400 sp ft, so yes, 1600 is considered a smaller house.
    We are preparing to build (@under 1200) and the finehomebuilding videos have been a great source of inspiration, so thank you. It's easy to get caught up in the physical and functional aspects of a house, you forget just how beautiful and meaningful they can be as well. You guys do a great job reminding, cheers.

    Beautiful small home. Yes by today’s building trends. 2000 to 5000 are standard. 1600 is less than the average. Great work optimizing. I’m attempting to build even smaller. Thanks for the inspiration.

      From experience, I say for two adults, 1,100 sq. ft. is doable...but no smaller. This one in the video at 1,600 sq. ft. is not small in my book unless you have, say, a family of 6.

    Wow folks, For this woman, this is a small house, she downsized, and she physically moved into a new home that is actually 1000 square feet smaller than what the new AVERAGE house is. She did not move into a TINY House, She moved into a SMALL HOUSE

    That is 700 more space than I have currently. We are looking to expand about 150 feet (just a 10 x 15 room) so we could have storage and sewing room. To me small home is UNDER 1k sq ft. I'd call this a MODERATE sized home.

    Hey folks, lighten up! This is just a video about a home within a CATEGORY of sizes by Fine Homebuilding Magazine! I know your self worth is dependent on how small your home and how deprived you don't feel but cut these people some slack. In Maine they have to be inside most of the year , as the designer mentions. (Yes, my house is 500 sq ft). Tiny homes, cabins, mcmansions, castles, to each their own......

    how is 1600 square feet considered small? plus there was a basement but they didn't even show . and please don't insinuate that having a minimalistic lifestyle is the same as having a lack of taste. that house was nothing but pale walls and pine. there was nothing in it to give it some personality.

    This is a _huge_ house! Lots of wasted, unnecessary, unused space... She seems to be confusing the concept of small space living with the _decor_ term "minimalistic". Not to be disrespectful, I just think this is misrepresenting what small space living truly is, which is at least half of her house, getting down to bare basics (NO WASTED SPACE), making do, and it isn't easy to achieve or live in a small home. If they would have stopped at the first floor, it would have been on the small side; however, this is a mini mansion. I daresay you could fit 5 of my house in there and have room left over.

    I am reading a lot of snobbish comments. I love the tiny house movement, but this is not a tiny house, I think it is safe to say this home is small. To me, it is not a tiny house, but in comparison with what really wealthy people have it sure is. I praise the person who owns this home in not building the taj mahal hall. 500sq is not for everyone. I am pro for having a smaller house, but not that small. I am glad to see many people live in 500sq homes and many of them are beautifully built.

    1600sq ft is not a small house. I live in 1300sq ft house and we have lots of space to roam around in over 3 levels. So small space does not equate to 1600sq ft. under 900sq ft is when I start calling it a small home.

  • @TheWildDeadHero

    This house really isn't all that small. It may be small in comparison to many homes that were built in the past 25 years, especially the Midwest, but 1600 square feet is nothing to scoff at. To add, also, is the fact that this house has a basement. That adds a lot of space, whilst also not adding to the square footage of the house (as only finished and livable rooms add to a house's measured square footage). I mean, the house I own reaches almost 1300 square feet, and I have more space than I know what to do with. It absolutely puzzles me when the owner says that "when you bring something in, you have to take something out" when her house is about 300 square feet larger than mine.Additionally, I don't think the architect should receive any accolades for this house. It's readily apparent that it's a derivation of 1920's pre-suburban architecture (of which plans are very readily available). Many houses near me look similar to it, and have equally similar layouts, albeit more accommodating to the time period. It's not original in the slightest.

    I, too, live in a smaller home - roughly 1,100 square feet, and that's one story without a basement or garage. I do think this house is lovely in its simplicity. It is a small house when compared to most of the newly constructed homes in the US. However, in my community this would be considered a good sized house, not small. Also, there seems to be a basement (which we didn't see in the video), and even though it's not considered living space, it can be used for much-needed storage.

      The house shown (1,600 ft) would fall into the medium, not small, category by American builders standards - 700-1,250ish ft defines 'small' by those same standards. Tiny houses generally fall under the 500 ft mark though I know this leaves a 200 ft. undefined gap between tiny and small but those are general American building standards.

    i don't get why people who watch this and the other small house video get so worked up about what a small house is.
    according to the 2010 u.s. census, the average size house in the u.s. is 2200 to 2600 sq ft, depending on the part of the country you live in. www.census.gov/const/C25Ann/sftotalmedavgsqft.pdf
    a home that is 1600 sq ft is on the small side. in light of that, these homes are in fact small....waaay smaller than the AVERAGE american home. homes above that average are probably considered on the larger size.
    this is not about you and your little experience. please stop comparing yourself and what you can afford (or not afford) and how you live to these homes.
    get a grip, get some perspective and just appreciate the house.

    • @icancommentnow
      @icancommentnow 10 років тому

      When you say "AVERAGE" in all caps, are you including the apartments that millions of Americans live in? When you say you don't get why people get so worked up about what a small house is, are you maybe a little worked up yourself? I only ask because your next statement "this is not about you and your little experience," comes across as a little hostile, like maybe you were worked up. Besides, the American way norm is not the same as the human norm, and todays average home sizes give much more square footage per person than what most of our parents had.
      In this woman's specific case, her house is medium for the city she lives in, and small for the greater area; certainly small for new single family construction in the area.

    • @iwasborntobefly
      @iwasborntobefly 10 років тому +1

      icancommentnow i don't get why you don't understand this. this is based on houses/homes. if you want to further understand the methodology/definition of a house or home, click on the united states census website or the link i provided. condos and townhomes may be included. but again, i'm sure there is a definition they use to describe what a house is for people like you who don't get it. sorry you can't understand the difference between a regular apt rental and an actual home. lol. ridiculous. i knew someone would try to dispute facts that have been gathered.
      we are not talking about the so-called human norm, which means nothing and is completely subjective - cuz you know everybody's reality is different. this is not about how somebody lives in paris or guangzhou or perth. i mean, please provide a link to what the "human norm" is for living space in a house. we are talking about things that are quantifiable in this context, the united states.
      in the context of the united states, and the u.s. census, this woman's house is small compared to the average american home. again, in this context, that's all that matters.
      if i sound irritated, it's because i find comments where people compare their particular situation or circumstance totally stupid. i live in an apartment that is small. but i know that if i went to look for a house, that house, esp. if it was new, would be larger and large (accdg to the u.s. census) because that is how they are built in the u.s. actually, most homes throughout the world are larger than apartments which is one reason why people seek them.

    Not a small home. Living in 1000 sq feet or smaller is small. 1600 is not huge but not small medium. But nice home tho.

    At "just under 1600 sq ft", this home does NOT remotely qualify as a 'small house' and should never have qualified for recognition as the finest example of such for 2014; this is nothing short of perhaps a calculated slap in the face to dedicated proponents of the true small/tiny house movement. Perhaps the 2015 'Best Small Home' will be around 2000 sq ft. Idiots.
