This class of battleship draws it's name from the Royal Navy's H.M.S. Dreadnought. When it was commissioned, it made every other battleship obsolete and defined how battleships would be constructed from that point on. Naval historians refer to battleship development in two classes, "Dreadnought" and "Pre-Dreadnought". This ship was that profound a departure from everything that came before it. She was the first battleship armed solely with heavy guns. She was also the first battleship powered by steam turbines, making her faster than any other battleship afloat.
BTW, Dreadnought means "fear nothing" which Sabaton played with in the lyrics.
Also the name continues in the Royal Navy with their latest nuclear ballistic missile class submarine, will be named the Dreadnought class. They're currently under construction now.

The Royal Navy kept upgrading and advancing the concept incredibly fast you come to WW2 and you look at Bismarck and Turpitz it meant nothing to the capabilities of the Royal Navy Battleships like The Prince of Wales hell even HMS Hood they were very cable vessels even arguably the older Elizabeth Class Battleships were still quite good

I would add that WW1 ones were called super-dreadnought, in fact that battle in 1916 is the one one during WW1 with dreadnought present, all other were with super-dreadnoughts only (as the main battleships). then in WW2 the new generation that came after super dreadnought were simply called Battleships.

Yep, about the Dreadnought type battleships, and the 1916 naval Battle of Jutland between the British and German navies. The first ship of the kind was the British battleship HMS Dreadnought, commissioned 1906. The only one left today is the U.S.S. Texas, now a museum ship.
Sabaton History has an episode for every song. Some songs have 2 or 3 episodes. Usually hosted by Indy Neidell and either bassist Par Sundstrom or lead singer Joakim Broden. The episode for this song, at the end, shows pictures of the band visiting the U.S.S. Texas during their last US tour.
Check out the episode for any of the songs you have done so far.

There are some tells here: "the fleet of the high seas approach" - the German navy in WWI was called the High Seas Fleet.
"the grand fleet prepares their guns" - the British navy was called the Grand Fleet at the time.

Sabaton History channel has an episode for each song to further explain the story behind the lyrics. So you should start with the songs you have already heard eg look up 'Sabaton History Bismarck' or 'Sabaton History Uprising' etc. Each episode is around 15 mins.

The Dreadnought is my absolute favorite. This is such power, such incredible energy. And Tommy's guitar solo? It's incomparable! Dreadnought is undoubtedly Sabaton's best song for me.

Imagine being a soldier in the first world war guarding a coastal position thought to be unassailable.... The sun starts to rise, and mist clings to the waves... And out of the mist comes a ship you've never seen the likes of before, bristling with artillery and steel plating.... And your blood runs cold as those guns start to turn to face you in the distance...

Dreadnoughts were the most bass-ass ships ever built, with super thick armour, really big guns to be able to crack the armour of other dreadnoughts, and commonly used as command ships after WW1. It was the battle of Jutland where Dreadnoughts would clash for the first and last time on a major scale, mostly due to the costs of repairing such massive ships after being shelled hundreds of times, like HMS Warspite, the greatest Dreadnought ever built, with the most battle honors of any Royal Navy ship in the history of the Royal Navy's existence, and the second most decorated Warship in history. The 3rd Queen Elizabeth class battleship which was involved in the battle of Jutland suffered so much damage and was forced to leave the battle, was still able to sail under her own power even though repairs involved basically rebuilding the ship from the ground up. They thought of scrapping her then and there, but things would be a bit different if they did.
HMS Warspite became the Royal Navy's flagship of the Mediterranean sea under Sea Lord Andrew Cunningham just before WW2, and eventually became the honorary flagship of the Royal Navy as a whole by the end of WW2. She took part in many really important battles, set records no other ship has beaten even today, was basically the ship that fought all 3 axis powers and none of them could take her down no matter how hard they tried. She lead a sneak attack on the Italian navy, getting to point blank range before opening fire on the ships with 2 of her sister ships, HMS Valiant and HMS Barham, she was one of the few dreadnoughts to have engaged another dreadnought in WW2, she is the only warship minus carriers, to have scored a U-boat kill with its catapult spotter aircraft, she scored the longest range hit on a moving target being the Italian Battleship "Giulio Cesare", she was given the honor of being the first ship to open fire on the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944, among other things.
if it has not been for the poor state of the British economy after WW2, they would have kept Warspite, and nearly did regardless but ultimately she was deemed too expensive to make repairs and maintain, and was sent off to be scrapped in 1947, not before breaking free of her towing ships, sailing 22km on her own, and running aground at Prussia Cove where she sank a bit into the mud and refused to budge no matter how hard anyone tried to get her free. She was scrapped on the most which took 3 years, likely costing more then she was worth and likely would have bee cheaper to keep her around then to have scrapped her.
There were 5 Queen Elisabeth class battleships built, HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Valiant, HMS Warspite, HMS Barham, and HMS Malaya, however not all of them made it to the end of WW2 to be scrapped. HMS Barham while on escort duty with Valiant and Queen Elizabeth among other smaller warships protecting a large convoy of ships, was struck by a salvo of torpedoes from a German U-boat, and they struck her in just the right places to where it only took 4 minutes for the massive Dreadnough to roll to port, have one of her main battery magazines detonate, and go under. A little over 860 crew were lost. November 25th, 1941.

I love the fact that Warspite "seemly" fought against her final fate, essentially sinking herself rather than be scrapped. An act of 'Spite' to her own creators.

    • @AngryCanine
      @AngryCanine 6 місяців тому

@@thesinistersiblings705 yeah, when she broke free of her towing ship and sailed on her own, where she actually ran aground before getting to Prussia Cove, but broke free soon after and sailed 22km before smashing into the shallow waters. Several breaches in the hull caused the front end to sink into the mud, and listed to port before she was firmly stuck in the mud. It didn't matter what the skeleton crew onboard did after the ship broke free, if I remember right, the rudder jammed itself, a common issue Warspite suffered since Jutland, which the small crew couldn't do anything about and is one reason she sailed into the shallow water of Prussia Cove. She was defiant to the end, refusing to be stopped by the Japanese, Italians, and Germans, and even by her creators, going down on her own terms, costing the government more money then it would have cost to simply do the repairs and upkeep of the ship, but also putting on one hell of a show for the people who lived at or around Prussia Cove, and for those who travelled to see the beached Dreadnought that refused to move from that spot.
3 years of sitting there being scrapped on the spot, and a completely empty hull with no super structure or anything else to it, was finally re-floated and towed to scrap. There is no other warship in history who had one hell of a history like Warspite, and the Dreadnought Warspite brought the biggest honour and fame to the name, which I recall, she was the 5th ship with the name? Going from a floating pile of scrap after Jutland about to be scrapped if not for Churchill himself stepping in to save her, to becoming the most decorated warship the Royal Navy has ever had. Sea Lord Andrew Cunningham was probably as proud as a captain of any ship could be, and her crews deserved so much, but most of all, the ship itself deserved so much more, and it would be one thing I would change in a heart beat if I could go back in time and save her from being scrapped, and instead maybe send HMS Belfast to scrap instead of Warspite, since Warspite had done so much more then Belfast ever did, and deserves to sit where Belfast sits now... I mean, maybe keep both ideally, but if the choice is one or the other, Warspite 100% over Belfast.
On another note, I would also try and get the other 3 Queen Elizabeth class battleships built, as there was plan for Canada to fund the construction of 3 more ships, which would have meant 8 Queen Elizabeth class Dreadnoughts if the plans went through which they did not. They would have been the first Canadian Battleships, but oh well... We have HMCS Haida still around at least, the last surviving Tribal Class Destroyer of what, 33 built? Haida deserved to live on as well and thankfully she is still around, serving as a museum ship in Hamilton, Ontario.

And i just have to say how wonderful it's been, seeing how amazed and joyful you've been discovering them. I've been listening to them since around 2005 and seing someone realising just how wonderful they are at what they do always gives me this warm and fuzzy feeling. Apart from writing amazing music and freaking awesome lyrics, I completely agree with you that they keep history alive.

Hello Daniel, just a bit of information for you about Dreadnought. The Dreadnought class Battleship was a British design for the Royal Navy, it was the biggest and most feared Battleship of WW1. The first Dreadnought was HMS Dreadnought, later the German Navy ( the Kriegsmarine) came up with there own design. The Royal Navy Dreadnoughts finally faced the German Navy Dreadnoughts at the Battle of Jutland where it was the only battle on the sea where it was just Dreadnought Battleship's who faced each other in the only time in WW1, even though both sides had heavy losses it was the German Navy who never sent there remaining Dreadnoughts out again to face the Royal Navy Dreadnoughts ever again. The Royal Navy still used it's Dreadnoughts in which we had many to face the German Navy or any enemy Navy's, but the Germans would keep there Dreadnoughts mainly at German Naval ports. The Battle of Jutland was in the North sea between Scotland and Iceland and it is well documented and a very famous historic event in Britain. The Iowa class battleships were the last battleships in service in the world and used by the U.S, built during WWII, they were retired after the gulf War. The U.S still has USS Texas around- the last dreadnought . South Dakota class, and of course the Iowa class- the last in service battleships
