Brett Papa is one of the most underappreciated guitar teachers on UA-cam. I'm not saying he's not succesfull, I'm saying he deserves five times the subscribers he currently has. At least. And you too, Tim ;) Very nice to see you two together. Greetings from Italy!
Remember this - that once you achieve a certain understanding and competence with the instrument, you see it all as intuitive and simple. But getting there can take years of work and practice. Tim is a true master, as he creates sonic palettes of beauty from the simple brushstrokes he weaves together with the ear of an artist. There is a strong Zen aspect to all this which is awesome.
This approach is a very modern progressive lesson. As its two experienced guitar players breaking it down, chewing it up and spitting it out , so you can see it raw and open! Great as an intermediate player , to watch , because it plugs in alot of loose knowledge into an applicable spot. This is always also good for a beginner to watch if he/she is thirsty and wants to see the future of what to need to learn and how it will be usefull.. In the beginning so many terms come at you that you hear over and over but usually have no information to apply. Its like I have the eggs the flour the sugar the water. But I still cannt make a cake ???? Why guitar gods why???? This talk is a great wealth of information any guitar player can learn from. Thank you , both. P.S. if you knew how many books I have on scales, licks, cage system ( the complete caged system) and just how many times experience players bring up its importance. But never find information that tosses it all in , and shows you how to make something out of it.Makes my guitar book collection useful finally I have a reason to revisit them with different eyes. Because of this lesson I subscribed.Ive been a "stash" subscriber when he was just a "stach" and guitar and I always felt an urge to smoke something...
I've said it before and I'll damn sure say it again. You two guys have a knack for explaining theory and applications in a way that I just understand easier than I have ever before. Thanks!! :)
It’s funny after watching Bretts tutorial on CAGED after playing 37 years by ear and shapes today I’m playing and “seeing” what I’ve been doing for years 😂 it’s like old friends hiding behind trees ...if that makes sense...it’s like “ oh there you are!! And there!!!” It’s a revelation for me.....thank you guys, revealing this will of course better my playing.....Subbed to you both, best content on youtube for sure 👍🇬🇧
Also, I think this same concept works in a different way: If you know your pentatonic scale positions, just visualize the various chord shapes around each position and the notes those chords have. If you use Nashville numbers than it's a breeze to change in an out of other keys! That's how I tend to view it anyways... but then again, I'm just some guy who plays the guitar! What do I know?! haha
Great video guys! I always love watching when you two get together. The caged system really helped me with my solo improv and just getting to know the fretboard better, Thanks for the great content!
They call it "CAGED" but it should really be "CAGE" because the D open chord fingering is just a slight variation of the C open chord shape. It's just 2 frets up, minus the E and A strings.
Great lesson! Question....after getting caged major under my fingers is the next step learning caged minor so I can embellish the minor chords as well?
Thanks! I was afraid it would be something like that, while desperately hoping you'd say 'just a 12 dollar thingie I found on eBay' :D Why oh why must I love the sound of high-end stuff. :-(
That's kind of the problem that some people have with the CAGED system. Requires you to visualize another layer of patterns on top of the actual notes that you're playing. It's a bit confusing, "now I'm playing an A shape over a D chord". Helpful to get the pattern recognition down initially, but maybe ultimately slows you down when trying to know the notes and chords that you're playing? Everyone learns differently, whatever works!
I love both of ur channels subed to both, but Brett please teach something else besides the cage system.. That's all u have done for like the last year..

David RF And a hell of a nice guy to boot!

Thank you for these videos! Try to watch one every night before I go to bed and then rewatch them as I practice. Thanks again for the joy!

Thank you Mr Pierce! Brett Papa Stach is The Man!! Great teacher!!!
Love when you and Brett discuss fretboard magic and play dueling guitar runs.
Great lesson by 2 great teachers!

gold, gold, gold ... the key insight that so many need to progress. (including myself :)) Cheers Fellas. Super valuable content.
Two of my favorite dudes on the You Tube thingy!!!
doesn't get much better than this. I thought Tims first solo had an early Steely Dan vibe. sweet.
Gold lessons ..best teachers ever!
Awesome point Tim spend your whole life getting good at that system, which I think is key verses jumping around to different systems, etc
I really love the PRS!!!! Tim really adds to the a to,just about anything
..always a joy Tim and Brett.....good stuff ...thx "
Love to get a few of those chord progressions out into the open besides just the I IV V or V7 ha ha!
Love this lesson. Thanks guys!

AWSOME Tim! I asked about this very topic in your Master Class forum a while back! Great meeting you at the GLC! Thank you!
Great video guys! I always love watching when you two get together. The caged system really helped me with my solo improv and just getting to know the fretboard better, Thanks for the great content!
Great Guys!!!
Nicely demonstrated, guys
2 really different, but amazing guitars there... No idea which one I like more!
Great vid guys!
Awesome awesome video!!
This is super helpful! Thanks, dudes!
Great playing, nice lesson, but out of curiousity it leaves me with the question: What are those 10 most used changes according to you Tim?
Make a lesson on "Bold as love", please :)
Great!!!!

Glad I’m not the only one who thought like this . You can expand on the D shape into the C shape easily.
Very Good guys!!!!
Great lesson! Question....after getting caged major under my fingers is the next step learning caged minor so I can embellish the minor chords as well?
Good stuff, enjoyed the knowledge..it's like the matrix you see the code.. lol.
Nice vid!
Cool Video...
But now the next one has to be "the 10 chord progressions you'll ever need" ;)
That was the G form, not the A form. But I knew what you where talking about
I could play the minor pentatonic and Tim could make that sound album ready
Tim’s opening solo is how I sound in my head. In reality, not so much 🙁
I second that !!
What kind of stray are you playing Brett?
Does anyone know what brand/model that bridge humbucker in Papa's guitar is, please?
Lollar Imperial Low Wind
Thanks! I was afraid it would be something like that, while desperately hoping you'd say 'just a 12 dollar thingie I found on eBay' :D
Why oh why must I love the sound of high-end stuff. :-(
Mea Dish l
What are the 10 chord progressions?
Sounds a lot like Steve Maase and his "movable shapes" lessons
Well f**k... So, how much can you love Tim Pierce before it's wrong. He brought up the friggin' Matrix! Where does it end?
I didn’t learn the CAGED system growing up taking lessons. I guess I learned a different method. My teacher did not choose CAGED.
Looks like someone's been eating enchiladas at Duran's Pharmacy in Albuquerque.
Huevos rancheros , Homemade sausage with lemon squeezed on top
I've been waiting twenty years to see that matrix...ugh I'm convinced I'm tone deaf lol
Who made that single cut LP?....ya brets great tho
Nvrmnd lol PRS sorry
Isn’t that “A” shape really a “G” shape the way Brett Papa played it?
Scott Miller yeah! I thought the same thing. He did the same thing with the D shape, actually playing out of the C shape.
That's kind of the problem that some people have with the CAGED system. Requires you to visualize another layer of patterns on top of the actual notes that you're playing. Consider breaking free from chord progressions to unchained melodies.
If you know barre chords you basically know the caged system, right?
This is a kinda nice, de-mystifying of the whole thing.
I love both of ur channels subed to both, but Brett please teach something else besides the cage system.. That's all u have done for like the last year..
