Watch their Christmas special on live TV, you can clearly see that Scott takes over the base from Avi, when his solo starts. same thing in Sound of Silence, when Matt‘s solo starts. That‘s why for me Scott is actually the hidden gem of the group: he can go down as low as Avi if need be, but he can almost go up as high as Mitch (The Prayer, Coffee in bed). Nobody seems to ever appreciate that!
Scott can, indeed, take over the bass harmony line, and does so during live perormances. This isn't a live performance; that's Avi singing his own bass harmony line. Also, while Scott can certainly sing well into the bass range that doesn't mean he can go as low as Avi can, any more than the fact that he can sing well into the tenor range means that he can sing as high as Mitch can. Scott is neither a basso profundo nor a contratenor. Scott is a wonderful lyric baritone. Every member of Pentatonix is impressively talented, and they have no need to compete with each other. I don't believe that any member of Pentatonix is under-valued, though sometimes individual fans will "pick a favorite." But if anything were to happen to a different member of Pentatonix those fans would suddenly discover that the injured member is really their favorite, because we all know how important it is that all five members be healthy, happy, and in good voice.
The only member of Pentatonix who comes anywhere close to being "hidden" is Matt, because his range is still developing and it's sometimes hard to keep up, but Pentatonix is making sure that he gets a chance to display his talents in every concert - have you HEARD his current version of the second verse of "Hallelujah"? It'll absolutely wow you. I think he can actually sing higher than Scott, though still not as high as Mitch or Kirstie, and I think he's getting closer to basso profundo range every day.
It's Scott doing the bass while Avi sings...no track. You can see it when they do it live. And Kevin is a tenor. All of them ( with the exception of Matt) have done solo work. Mitch has Messer, Kirstie has done a stint on Broadway for Kinky Boots and a solo release ( also has written a few songs performed by the group) and just has her first child 5 months ago, Scott has a solo release ... also formed Aca Pop kids and Citizen Queen ( all female A Capella band), Kevin has his own channel, KO ,where he loops cello, keyboard, beatboxing and singing...all his own work. They all songwrite within the group as well, especially Kevin, Matt and Scott. Have you had a chance to do a reaction/analysis of The Prayer by the group yet?
These guys just constantly blow my mind. You know how certain elements combine to create a perfect storm? I think this is what happened with PTX - a blend of individual, extraordinary voices who have the "know-how", talent, drive and humility to blend their voices into something so much bigger than the sum of its parts. They create a musical perfect storm or mega-tsunami, but not in a destructive sense. Their sound together seems so much bigger than only 5 people and it flows out to reach peoples hearts. It is hard to explain and I hope I am making sense here. They have the ability to resonate with people. Believe me, I have watched so many reaction videos and I have NEVER heard/seen a negative reaction.

The talent from these 5 people, as well as Matt, cannot be overstated. Actually, yes and no. This is being performed live in the moment even though the audio is not being recorded live here. That is their version of lip syncing to actually sing the words. They are singing but not recording the voices here. Then they marry the video they recorded here with the prior audio they recorded in the studio. But they can do anything displayed here live on stage. And any time Avi, andnow Matt, sings lead line, Scott takes over the bass line. His range dips quite deeply into the bass register and up throughout the tenors. Kevin, whenhe does sing, is a natural tenor with a wonderful falsetto. I absolutely love it when Kirstie goes into her head voice (which you can count on at least once a song) and slips into belt. This time Mitch joins her with a belt of his own. Usually he is so apparently still in his chest voice and still up there. It is difficult to see when he transitions from chest to head voice. Scott and Kirsten and even Matt are apparent when they transit to head voice. Even Avi is relatively obvious when he does it. Mitch is so smooth that it is hard to see sometimes when he makes that transition. But in this song they were ramping up each person within their own solo from full chest to full head by the time they got to the Hallelujahs, at which point they would begin easing back down.
No. Scott takes over the bass for Avi. No back tracks. Scott has quite a respectable bass. Check out Scott Hoying's "I Should Tell Your Mama On You". His bass is other-worldly. Kistie (rhymes with "thirsty""). Kistin Maldanado is her full name.
PTX should put a subscript on the video saying Scott is singing the bass line, because lots of people wonder about it. Kirstin has done solo work and was on Broadway with Kinky Boots. But PTX gives her (and all of them) the freedom to do both.
From past interviews and conversations, they have said that yes while doing this live Scott is singing the bass but for continuity on the album it's Avi doing the bass.

Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty. (Common mistake.) This song was my introduction to Pentatonix, and I replayed it many times in awe and appreciation before I moved on to other songs by them. They were a pandemic discovery for me, and I am so grateful to have found them. Peace from Ohio …
Imagine being in your 60s and unable to pronounce your own name. My parents named me a less common spelling on a common name, with a little different pronunciation...and to this day, I have never been able to say my own name to my mother's satisfaction...
I've have watched so many reactions to this stunning performance of this iconic song, but it still thrills me, every time I listen to it. Another great reaction, too. On point, and to the point, with no waffle! ;-) As far as I know, when Avi was featuring, Scott took over the bass lines.
Most people assume that Kevin is a bass just because he's a beatboxer, but he actually has a pretty high tenor range. You really hear that in their cover of Imagine where he sings higher than Mitch and in The 12 Days of Christmas. His solo work is well worth a watch. I'd start with "Down" a Marion Hill cover.
I really like the vocal breakdown. I will listen to a song many times, picking out the parts. When I was a child, my dad made me do this, teach the parts to my siblings, and we would perform it a capella.
Recommend their Hallelujah from the 2016 Christmas Special for a great live version. You can see Scott covering bass. Fortunately, PTX has Matt now as he is incredible. Recommend their Mr. Grinch for a great Matt lead.
There's an interview with Avi where he states that in the live version Scott takes over the bass line while he solos, but for this version Avi did both parts with overdubbing. There's also an interview online with one of their mix engineers where he talks about the effects. All the usual stuff is used including reverb, delay, EQ, compression and limiting. In this particular version the voices are HIGHLY compressed. The engineers did an amazing job finding the 'goose bump' settings - I don't think they get enough credit, along with the videographer and editor of this masterpiece. And that doesn't take away at all from the talent of the singers or their amazing arrangement and performance.
Love your reaction 👍 you should check their live version, as a music teacher I'm sure that you'll appreciate it even more than us. Amazing, and you can catch every single note by each one. And Avi ... To hear him live doing this song, I just got chills just to think about it 😍 thanks 😘
I believe this was done at Edwards Air Force Base just east of Mojave, California. The setting for me really enhances the song, focusing on the performers instead of the settings. Beautiful song.
If I remember correctly Kristen and Scott were in school together and in choir together and Mitch may have been there too I can't remember but Kevin they found on UA-cam and then being on that singing competition, each of them could obviously have a solo career and do well but they chose to do what they do together and I for one am thankful they decided to go this route. This group is so Iconic and in my mind no one has really been able to touch them vocally.
Enjoyed the reaction to this amazing performance by PTX! One note: a pet peeve of hers is being called KRistin, rather than KIRstin. Kirstin/Kirstie rhymes with Thurston/thirsty.
Since you appreciate Avi's bass capabilities, you should enjoy this live studio version of his original song "When I'm a Fool" from his 11-song, all-original album "Floating on a Dream", produced by Grammy-winning Shooter Jennings (who you'll see playing the black Gibson SG in the video). It was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound in LA, with some of the best studio musicians in the area. You'll hear and see how he's able to sing the notes that are at the far low end of the piano. And he goes into his upper register in this as well. ua-cam.com/video/LE24UTH3pmQ/v-deo.html
You are the first reaction video of this I have seen to point out the bass notes under avi's solo. It's definitely Scott taking over the bass line. Just so talented! They all have impressive ranges, which makes them be able to always sound so full and Fresh.

My favorite is mitch and has been since I was first introduced to this group with this song. I love all the others but mitch to me is a once in a generation voice that's so unique you literally jump when he first start singing even if you've heard him many times before. He has the ability to draw emotion out of the audience more than any other member and that with his perfect pronunciation the group has used strategically with this song being one of the first time along with their final performance in sing off all the way to their most recent release, where the rest of the group drops out and sings in a low almost reverent way while mitch delivers either the chorus or his verse. It's truly beautiful..
Mitch is my favorite personally. There's no other member thst brings out the emotion from tbe audience as mitch and tptx has used that many times by saving his bit strategically and then dropping out to alow his voice to shine more. You should check out his solo work like his cover of Billie eilish song your power.
Kevin is a tenor, that is Scott the baritone dropping down to his lower register, he has a great range, he is the vocal acrobat of the group covering a wide range.
One of the reasons they stay together as a group is because they are all allowing each other to do their own thing as well. Superfruit is a subgroup with just Mitch and Scott. Kirsten has some singles she's done as well as Scott.
I know that Kirsty is singing with Mitch it helps to carry Mitch's voice. When I was in High school chorus as a first tenor (I'm almost a counter tenor myself and they would put the mezzo behind me to carry my lighter thinner voice).
I think one of the reasons they have stayed together is that they al do solo projects. KO has always had solo stuff, Kirstin released her LOVE EP in 2017 around the same time that Scott and Mitch released the amazing Future Friends They all have solo stuff but each thing is a separate entity. Other than Superfruit, they don't make guess appearances on each other's records, keeping them separate and allowing them all space to breath.
Not sure how the lead/bass switch were done in the recording studio, but when they perform this live, Matt and Scott switch for the second verse. It's really beautiful to hear them...they're masters.
You need to react to Home Free...they are a country acapella group who will delve into other genres too. Start with Man of Constant Sorrow then Ring of Fire. After those try End of the Road and/or When a Man loves a Woman. From there, pick from the literal dozens of covers they have performed.
Scott always picks up the bass when Avi/Matt sings a solo. If you watch their live versions you'll see that. Kevin is a Tenor - and in fact he's a high Tenor, Mitch says he can actually sing higher than him!
Kristin has released a single EP "Love" in 2017. It's a beautiful EP. I think one reason the group has remained mostly intact all this time is their openness for all of them to release their own music. Kevin has released at least one very good EP and cover videos.
Kirsten did issue a solo EP a few years back (called, oddly enough "Kirsten") but it wasn't as successful as the PTX stuff, and now that she's a mom, I can't see her leaving anytime soon.
Scott is picking up the bass. He does it in other works more than you know. Also I’ve heard you mention “is it a harmonics or a high voice actually singing.” Kevin is a tenor. He is utilized in the high noted, as well.
Watch Sound of Slience and the Prayer if you don't know Scott's lower register. Kevin is a higher tenor. Kirsten has many leads...need to watch more. Their harmonies are the best ever...why would want to separate them?
I found this today, and enjoyed your video and of course, this song by Pentatonix, which I’ve seen hundreds of times. Thanks! If you’ll be reacting to music videos and want to grow your channel, I suggest you do some of them using performances others haven’t done, too. There are so many amazing artists to view, and I’d love to see your unique take on them! If you haven’t done any of Puddles Pity Party yet, please take a look at his work! You can start here, with When The Party’s Over, Billy Eilish: ua-cam.com/video/WeqX99TYm38/v-deo.html His many fans would argue this isn’t his best, but I love it!
There is no backtrack, it is Scott who sings the bass, as the transition is very well done it is difficult to notice that Scott stop singing in Alelu... and so Avi finish the word singing the last trhee letters uia, this way he lets Scott free to continue the base line, the transition is so smoothly that becomes hard to notice that it is Avi singing and not Scott anymore and at this moment Scott is already doing the base line
Couple things : 1. Scott takes over those low notes during Avi's feature & 2. It's Kirstin not Kristin. Just so you know! Pentaholix might yell at you for that! lol Hmm. Though I guess I actually AM a Pentaholic. LOL. Oh well. I loved your reaction. I'll check out more. Merry Christmas to you
Leonard Cohen was trying to push the concept of Hallelujah deep into the secular world. Hallelujah is a song with at least seven verses, and they speak about how Hallelujah’s the only word left, when you can’t think of any other way to speak to God. When all other lights go out, the only way out of the darkness is Hallelujahs
They all have solo albums away from Pentatonix and all support one another .. Kristen sees the lads as her brothers and you don't split family.. when they made it after the sing off she cried and said to the interviewer now people will hear Mitches voice.. they've known each other since they were kids and I heard someone say she used to stop him being bullied over his high voice..
Yeah, Jenefer Lane has it right... the only time Avi is double tracked is the last part right before the ending. Double tracked or not, it's incredible. Their live performance is no less awe inspiring.
I would love to see a reaction to a backyard concert Jason Mraz did in Ootmarsum. If you start at about 33:15, you can catch some of the ways he transitions to a new song, going into one of my favorite songs of the concert from another favorite (and more well-known). Some things go astray, but the way he handles little things that come up are magical. If you need a more upbeat tune, around 2:09:33. PLEASE ! ua-cam.com/video/WBIGmjQhpGY/v-deo.html
it is not reverb being done, it is the fact that all of them have amazing range and it is several of them doing the particular parts just a fraction off to each other. and as to the base when Avi is singing lead it is Scott that picks up that base line, Now truth be told Scotts base level is amazing but he can only carry that for a short time. And as to there being post production, I have heard them live and they do all of that sound with no mikes at all. As to solo work Kirsten does as Kirsten TM, Mitch does Mercer, and Scott has done just recently his Mars album... Also Kirsten did a seaason on Broadway in Kinky Boots, Kevin does solo youtube things, and Avi is off on his own. Still they all beleive that they sound best together.
Reverb is a function of acoustics, not vocal technique. It is either added in post production as an effect or it happens live because of the acoustics of the venue, hence why concert halls are so important in how they are designed. Appreciate the feedback!
I'm sure plenty of people have told you Scott covers bass when the bassist is leading, and cited live performances where this is obvious. But I'll go one better and link the best Hallelujah live with this lineup: ua-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/v-deo.html. This older live is probably the one that isclosest in time to the release of the studio version, so it's a great direct comparison.
On an official video, which this is, they're lip-synching to the studio recording that they've already made. The way they lip-synch is to actually sing the song while they're recording the video, which makes it easy to keep in time with the original and makes all of their movements authentic. However, on studio recordings they cheat a little during the bass's solos. Avi (or Matt, in later releases) will record a second track with the bass harmony line for his solo, and they'll layer that in - they decided that it improved the audio just enough to justify it. And since what you're hearing in this video is the studio recording, that's Avi singing the bass harmonies. But Pentatonix never lip-synchs in live performances, and it would be too hard to drop that pre-recorded harmony track in at the proper time, so in live performances Scott takes over the bass's harmony line during the bass's solos. It would be impossible for Kevin to take over the bass harmonies because Kevin is a tenor. I've heard him sing in the baritone range occasionally, but that's as low as he goes.
No backtrack. it is Scott singing the bass line while Avi performs his solo. Basically it is about as low as Scott can go it seems. Watch the live version of the song it is virtually the same.

I really like the vocal breakdown. I will listen to a song many times, picking out the parts. When I was a child, my dad made me do this, teach the parts to my siblings, and we would perform it a capella.
More interesting is that Leonard Cohen wasn't a mucian he was a poet, he switched to singing to make his poems more commercial.
Recommend their Hallelujah from the 2016 Christmas Special for a great live version. You can see Scott covering bass.
Fortunately, PTX has Matt now as he is incredible. Recommend their Mr. Grinch for a great Matt lead.
Always love Mitch voice in contrats with low bass of Avi, makes a great efect on that part, Mitch kill it with
BRO!! I love your speaking voice.
If you go watch the live version, you can see Scott doing the bass when Avi is singing.
Beautiful song.
loved it, Shawka. That's one of my favourite songs, and I've never heard that version before.
Kirstin, not Kristin
Beautiful album!
I second this recommendation!
Anything by Avi is amazing. If you want to hear his range, check out his song "The Summit". An older song with no video, but definitely worth hearing.
I totally agree! Avi is in a class by himself!
You are the first reaction video of this I have seen to point out the bass notes under avi's solo. It's definitely Scott taking over the bass line. Just so talented! They all have impressive ranges, which makes them be able to always sound so full and Fresh.
I think one of the big reasons PTX has done so well over the years and work so well together is they are still free to explore their own projects.
Honestly they have created a footnote in history with this song. ---- Mitch. God he can sing ----
They all have done solo projects, but pledged that Pentatonix takes priority.
Pentatonix members have also done their own side projects. Here are some songs to react to when you want to look from a little PTX sidepath.

They just came out with a new version of Hallelujah a few weeks ago. Try it, you’ll like it.
You should hear Avi singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight. He does OVERTONE singing. Scott always does the base when Avi isn't. He covers base easly.
Scott takes the bass when Avi sings, if you listen to their live version it becomed more apparent.
Mitch is my favorite personally. There's no other member thst brings out the emotion from tbe audience as mitch and tptx has used that many times by saving his bit strategically and then dropping out to alow his voice to shine more. You should check out his solo work like his cover of Billie eilish song your power.
Aside from the version in the first Shrek movie, Pentatonix's cover of Hallelujah is my favorite.
That is Avi you hear, it’s layered. When they sing it live, Scott takes the bass. ❤
You're right. It is Avi's voice in this. His voice is always in studio versions, but live, Scott steps in and covers the base.
Check out Mary Did You Know. First time we really got to hear and appreciate Avi. My all time favorite
When Avi is singing, Scott picks up the base till he’s done
You need to react to Home Free...they are a country acapella group who will delve into other genres too. Start with Man of Constant Sorrow then Ring of Fire. After those try End of the Road and/or When a Man loves a Woman. From there, pick from the literal dozens of covers they have performed.
Scott always picks up the bass when Avi/Matt sings a solo. If you watch their live versions you'll see that. Kevin is a Tenor - and in fact he's a high Tenor, Mitch says he can actually sing higher than him!
Scott covers the bass when Avi or Matt solo
Kristin has released a single EP "Love" in 2017. It's a beautiful EP. I think one reason the group has remained mostly intact all this time is their openness for all of them to release their own music. Kevin has released at least one very good EP and cover videos.
That's Scott doing the bass line when Avi sings.
If u want to hear how low Scott can go, listen to Scott Hoying's "Tells ur Mama". U will be shocked! 👏🏻💕🤘🏻
Recommend their Sound Of Silence. Subscribed.
It was layered post production
Merry Christmas to you
Oh I've been scolded 😂 Merry Christmas to you as well!
Kirstin, not Kristin.
Scott sings bass when Avi sings. Scott sings bass now when Matt is otherwise occupied.
It's even better live!!!
You should watch their performances on the 3rd season of the the sing off, began where it all began
Angelina Jordan , 7 years old singing a capella on Norway’s Got Talent, I’m A Fool To Want You. Unbelievable.
it is not reverb being done, it is the fact that all of them have amazing range and it is several of them doing the particular parts just a fraction off to each other. and as to the base when Avi is singing lead it is Scott that picks up that base line, Now truth be told Scotts base level is amazing but he can only carry that for a short time.
Scott was on the baseline when Avi was in his solo.
Check out bohemian rhapsody and seasons of love.
Scott covers bass each time Avi is featured!
Scott and Mitch are known as Superfruit and mitch is also known as Messer.
It’s Scott doing bass line when avi is singing lead.
GORGEOUS
they are lip singing to the studio recorded yesss,,,you cant get that sound in the desert
It’s Scott doing the bass while Avi is singing
Oops! I meant pre-records backtracks ever.
It's definitely Scott singing base while Avi sings
Scott picks up the bass.
No backtrack. it is Scott singing the bass line while Avi performs his solo. Basically it is about as low as Scott can go it seems. Watch the live version of the song it is virtually the same.
