We always cut our firewood in the winter when I was a kid. Cut rounds, Toboggan out to the trail, load Into trailer, pull out with tractor. Burning wood warms you several times. Anyway, nice video Russell.
I made a similar log arch some years ago and it has worked well. Instead of winding the short chain around 5 times, just put the end onto the fixed hook and let it loop down. I often set the log arch trailer over the log by hand and then back up the ATV and hood up before picking up the end of the log.
Just a suggestion: YOU HAVE GREAT EQUIPMENT!!! Just for kicks, try this: connect your firewood trailer to your 4 wheeler, then connect log splitter behind to pull it to downed logs...... there is no reason to go searching the forest for wood.... just use chainsaw to cut closest downed tree... split it.... put in trailer.... bring firewood home.... get a cup of Joe.... go after another load.... stop all the unnecessary back n forth for logs...... unless you have a sawmill and want certain nice 10 ft straight logs... then leave on cable and pull home in comfort..,, do all cutting and splitting in the forest or lake..... make life easier on yourself.... good luck
I'm watching this video right now, and don't understand why Russel doesn't just cut the downed trees on site, then load them up in the trailer to bring home. Might save some gas too.
Thats an awesome log puller but i wouldn't hook that chain on one side to pull out a tree hook the chain the the center mass of the lower frame. Trust me im a fabricator and its a stronger point . Whoever built it did a great job of strength design in the frame. Oh and the chain to hook ur logs up is designed to be short chained by using the links in the clips welded on the side where ur hooking the hook Russell by wrapping the log once then short chaining it u'll see how good the really works .. I may be wrong but i don't think so . Neways its a great tree huller.
if i could add to your comment, I believe there could be a hook point added to the frame directly on the inside of the upright to the winch. Please Russell stop dragging that long length of chain around tied to your machine. You will do damage to your ATV it is only a matter of time not a maybe. Chainsaw chaps or full on pants are an absolute requirement when in the woods by yourself.
Are sure you know what your doing it looks like to me you are doing more work than you need to be doing stop and think about what your going to do next. Work smatter not harder.

Lots of work! I used to collect and burn wood in the wood stove in the wreck room to offset heating costs. As for the oak you have, personally I would pile it separately. But that’s me, I used to section the pine/cedar separate from the ash/birch and the tamarack in a separate location. I don’t remember from your past winters but do you and city girl skate? Cleaning off a section on the pond to skate around on and or shoot a hockey puck would be a great idea seeing as you have that pond in your own back yard… Peace!
I'd rather just have a good mix of oak and pine in with the rest (and poplar, I guess). We did skate in last year's Christmas week video. I think instead of just a rectangle of cleaned off ice, I'd rather have a trail that goes around the pond. More interesting.
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin that would be a nice idea, I’m from Winnipeg MB and down at the Forks where the Red and Assiniboine really rivers meet. They normally have 2-3 skating rinks plus a trail down the river then another skating trail around the grounds to another skating rink which is cool! My niece and I have for years made a nieces day and we go there and skate then I take her to the Old SPAGHETTI FACTORY restaurant for lunch. Always have an awesome day.
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin hey Russel. I follow another UA-camr (modern Self reliance). He seems to find free stuff everywhere. Anyways I think it was his last week’s episode or the one before that where he found this huge tarp thingy from a sports complex. He said they don’t like to throw these things away as they don’t want them going to a landfill. Anyways I just thought I’d let you know as if you could find one then 1 it’s free and 2 it is a huge heavy duty tarp that you could use to cover your wood pile. I know you have mentioned in the past with trying to find a better way to cover the firewood. Sorry. I can’t remember what exactly the tarp is called but apparently sports complexes change them every few years and give the old ones away. Hope that helps.👍
Russell clear your logging path. Always lay tools & devices in designated places. Plan, organize, & think your way through projects. Do not rush, cut corners, & hurry up especially when working alone (avoid injuries & accidents)! Another body & helper is always the way to go. Dry out your wood pile at least a year. Make sure to cover or having overhead to protect your dryout wood. Good Camping! lol
I love the sections where you speed up the actions, the sound is what makes it fun. Oh, burn the stuff you are gathering now, the pile is going to be nicely seasoned for next fall.
I’d suggest using a material tow strap for lashing and help grab the logs a little better instead of contending with all that chain. If the logs that you just retrieved are dryer I’d cut split and stack separately, perhaps in a different location. Those big logs really need to be cut down in smaller sections, just having a clear path so they don’t grab onto anything.Thats why a long tow strap may be easier dealing with, they’re much lighter and pretty strong
Good job but a few observations 1. we all make mistakes 2. If you wrap a chain twice around any log pulling it or dragging it, no slippage ever. 3. you have a four wheeler not a dozer so I think smaller log may work better for it. Anyway have a great day and hey tomorrow will be better for sure. I enjoyed the video,
Hi Russell from New Zealand. One of my favourite tasks is collecting firewood. My suggestion: if the wood is good-to-go, ie well seasoned, why not start using it straight away. BUT minimise the effort you have to expend ... stack it where it is easiest to reach ... don't waste time shifting your stacks around.
re: Wood stacking - start another new pile for the wood you have just harvested. Can't have to much wood cut/split/stacked! To little can kill. So keep on collecting until you have twice as much as what the locals tell you to have. 10 cord to make it through the fall/winter/spring, then 20 cords split/stacked/dried will give you plenty of "fudge" room. As long as you keep it dry, it won't go bad!
Great Video. Get as Much burning wood as you can now. There may be a day where you can't get it. Also work on getting wood from closer to the cabin and trail. You may have to widen the trail to get a truck in there. most of all have fun.
I have to say that I love the videos where you are hauling the logs across the frozen lake. The entire operation is riveting and I am here for all of it. Must-see TV in my opinion. There is a certain excitement when you free the log and pull it free and head to the other side of the lake. Together it is all relaxing to watch. The other part I love to watch is splitting them and stacking them. I enjoyed everything from beginning to end. Well, accept the strange meal. 😂😝
i am jealous of your wood pile. After a prolonged cold snap ours if very low. On top of that we have a lot more snow than usual so it is not easy to get at more. thanks for sharing.
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin I have lived where I am for almost 30 years and I have planned to be ahead every year, Made it a couple of times. So I just covet other peoples firewood piles.
I look forward to your vlog regarding major winter storm expected in your area Sunday night/Monday. Per the weather office 1-2 feet of snow is looking likely. I hope youll have a video detailing the storm. Stay safe!!
Those are two lucky dogs living the life at RR while Russell works hard keeping them warm with lots of firewood! Always enjoy seeing what you are up to in those Canadian woods! Great idea using the stones to count jogs around the pond.
Morning, Russell... Seems winter is finally here. It's about 3° and we're expecting our first big snow over here on the other side of lake Ontario. I recall Charles Darwin having a similar habit of marking off his laps around his "Thinking Path" with small stones, as he was often so lost in contemplation. Willow & Junebug, such happy dogs!
Ah, another adventure of Russell the logger!I remember when you picked up the log hauler from the Wizard, what a nice piece Dan (?), built for you! I just get the biggest kick out of seeing you and the dogs on the time lapse with all the little sounds! You did one heck of a job with that beer and your log hauling, thanks Russell.
Also, with the smaller logs you should be able to haul multiple at once. Like you figured out, get them together, pull up beside them then lift the hauler over the top and lift them up together with the cable.
Good seeing you out and about.. I think I’ve missed a video or two.. I’ll check.. anyway.. that log hauler does good.. I’d use the wood now.. just stack it and use it…I’m still wait for some decent snowfall.. keeps missing us.. so love looking at yours.. hey hope you had a good day.. see ya at the live..❤️☮️
Willow seems alot less skittish these days. I think you should try putting your cable farther onto the log then rise it up as far as you can before wrapping the chain. Won't swing as much on a short leash and less likely to get hung up. Also dragging that long chain loose behind you is a disaster waiting to happen.
I would make another pile of the 'newly harvested' wood, do a test of how it is burning in the fireplace and then burn that wood that is burning in a nicer way. Or mix, but from two piles. Anyway, wood prices in my country seem to have skyrocketed so you are lucky to have so much wood right under your... amazing haul :) Nice winter work!

Anybody who ever thought about heating with firewood soon realize how hard it is. Hard on the equipment, and harder on the body. I can't do it anymore, but you are doing great. More power to ya. Just be careful out there.
Careful backing over that chain, if a tire throws that around an axle you may have a costly repair. Seen that happen to my buddy. Yeah, backing up those short trailers are near impossible. Take care, stay safe!

Great video Russell and harsh is a good word for it. -40 with the wind chill here in South River. Bad day to try and change a micro SD card on a trail cam... yep dropped into the snow, never to be seen again lol Have a good one!

Hi buddy I was watching your video when you were getting the trees from your pond and that dolly you are using is a great idea. You should try to take the Handel off your winche and try using your battery powered drill instead. Great filming, keep up the great work 👍.
Nice job Russell. I'm always trying to work smarter not harder. I think I'd try to find a wide flat sled of some sort to load up and use tie downs and haul a bigger load per trip.
Beavers teeth continue to grow all the time so they have to chew to keep them at a optimal length. They use limbs in there dams but often leave the large trunks . I love to watch your adventures.
You might be the first. Always a Good Friday video. Strange weather this year. Not a lot snow and the temps up and down and all over the place. Stay safe in the pond. Put out some bird food and see if you can draw a few grouse in. Always good on the bbq wrapped in bacon :)
For the log that was stuck on the stump. You could have hooked your chain so the hook was lower back side of the log. Then take the chain put by the butt/top of the log and stump. This way when you pull on the log. It will pull back from the stump and roll the log away from the stump.
I,m a Shawn James fan since quite a few years now so I love when you really get into your chores. 🙂 It's good though that you speed up some parts. More work ahead on the bathroom and kitchen? 🙂
Log hauler kicked ass. Logs brought in, split it and store near the cabin, burn it this year. Just my thought. The pond. I always forget how big it is until you walk around it. Beer review gets an A+ from me. The tasting of the red beer showed me how much you enjoyed the taste after a day as you had. Nice.
Nice comments Tim, thanks. I was going split up a bunch of that wood and put it on my porch today, but I couldn't. And it'll get covered in snow by Monday. Oh well.
You were wonderful, reviewing the beer, as you always are - I totally dig watching you handling the wood too - so would like to see more! Hugs from us in Sweden!
I love the Red Green show !! Love the hocky one where the guy is wrapped in bubble wrap, LOL !!!! (Yes you can find it on YT) and I love watching your channel. You worked for that last one !! Your right, use these now and let the other stuff dry out longer. You need, not sure what it's called, is a metal bar/pole that has a hook on one end so you can hook a log and move it. Shawn has one. He can tell you what it's called. Your good at pouring the beer and giving your thoughts on color and taste. Thanks for sharing. God bless
🥳 Good job! 🤗 Russell. WoW! that was hard work. 🤗 I enjoyed my imaginary walk, the cold air on my face, the crunchy snow beneath my feet... ahh, ohh, and that breakfast sandwich - delicious. Thanks for the share. Be blessed, stay well and be safe. prayer hugs all, hang in there. Peace. 💌🎶 🎁🎂🕊 be happy! 😆 Lovely weather.
Per the weather office in Ottawa. Environment Canada says Ottawa could see 2 to 5 cm of snow per hour Monday morning and afternoon. The 25 to 40 cm of snow on Monday would set a record for greatest snowfall in Ottawa on Jan. 17. The current record is 11.7 cm of snow, set back in 1972.
For your long shots where you have to go back and get the tripod, could you hover the drone at camera height push record then when you are out of sight just recall the drone? I am not sure if this would work or not, but sure would beat running back and forth.
Let's have a watch... 👀oh the chainsaw back over owich.. That ham egg muffin looks good throw one in for me!!! And that log trailer is a great rig... The beer review was good man, pour looked good to me... Even the big sniff lol..
Well done Russel, except for the running over the chainsaw bit.. funny, though. Always burn your driest wood first, looks like the deadfall from the pond is really dry. A Logox is a 3in1 tool that would help you a lot in the woods. Actually I think you're looking a lot like the Beachcombers these days.... so next week call yourself Relic, and see if anyone catches it. Good job, I like the one hour show.
Hi Russ...Have you tried ice fishing on that pond? I would think it would contain pickerel, pike and perch. These specie are great eating in the winter.
I hate winches! I traded my sylvansport trailer up to my helio trailer becayse of 2 winch problems...cable got stuck 1 turn around the winch in Hocking Hills state park in Ohio then on the return trip at Whycocomag Park on Cape Breton Island the cable wrapped around 2x! Upon returning home I went online abd found this trailer .no winches on this 1!

I miss the snow. I totally miss that place in my heart I’ll never be at again. I’m glad I subscribed. Take care
they dont only eat the bark off the main trunk , they take the top branches and store them in their feed bed for the winter near to the lodge.
Your energy level is phenomenal!!!
Willow is all over the place. Love it.
Great video Russell and harsh is a good word for it. -40 with the wind chill here in South River. Bad day to try and change a micro SD card on a trail cam... yep dropped into the snow, never to be seen again lol Have a good one!
Oh crap, Frank. You know how many times I've tried to take the SD card out of my gopro, and thing pops out and sails across the room?
Glad you and your equipment survived MOSTLY unscathed! Great video Russell.
Thanks Markus!
Nice time lapse, look you and the puppies go . You sure did an awesome job hauling up all those logs to the cabin well done that log hauler is awesome . Red Green show lmao, Yup kinda . loved the video, say Hi to Alecia . Love Bobcaygeon area and the beer you did well telling us about the beer cheers Russ.
Great to see you out with doggies..such a beautiful landscape! 🐻🐻🌞🌲🌲🌲🌳🌳🌳
Thanks Ursula!
Hi buddy I was watching your video when you were getting the trees from your pond and that dolly you are using is a great idea. You should try to take the Handel off your winche and try using your battery powered drill instead. Great filming, keep up the great work 👍.
Hope you had a great Christmas and hopefully we all have a better New Year. ❤️🙏
Great video Russell. I have watched all your videos and this one is the best. Thanks for the entertainment!!!!
Hi Russ and Alicia, thank you for the great video and all the hard work filming Russ. Great pour and tasty looking. Be well.
Thanks John!
Great video Russell. I have watched all of your vids and this one is the best. Thanks for the entertainment.
Try the winch wire further along the log then use the chain to support.
The dogs enjoy those winter walks on the ice.🐈⬛🐈⬛
I love the Red Green show !! Love the hocky one where the guy is wrapped in bubble wrap, LOL !!!! (Yes you can find it on YT) and I love watching your channel. You worked for that last one !! Your right, use these now and let the other stuff dry out longer. You need, not sure what it's called, is a metal bar/pole that has a hook on one end so you can hook a log and move it. Shawn has one. He can tell you what it's called. Your good at pouring the beer and giving your thoughts on color and taste. Thanks for sharing. God bless
Thanks Tricia. It's called a Logox. I have one, bent the shit out of it the first time I tried to use it.
That was some fine ass beer reviewing, pure quality
Glad to see u have one of them log pulling things.
Try a longer chain so you can wrap it around the log several times mate
Hi Russ. Cut and split the wood and just place it in your existing wood pile. This way your wood is kept in one location. Cool video. 👍
Make multiple stacks but plan it so that you have easy access and close to the cabin for hauling in during heavy snow.
🥳 Good job! 🤗 Russell. WoW! that was hard work.
Lovely weather.
Most helpless man working in the wood I have ever seen
Love the Russel buffet style meal. Its PERFECT!!! lol
Timothy a remote control would be nice. Or if I could train the dogs to run back and grab the camera for me.
Relic was my favourite. I have a logox, bent the shit out of it the first time I used it.
Great log pulling! Them things are heavy. The log puller thing sure did it's job. Beer artfully poured and consumed.🍺
Thanks Deborah!
Love your videos and the puppies looked so happy on the walk around the pond...thanks for sharing!!! See you on the livestream!!
Thanks Kristin! See you in a bit!
Take care of you God only made one of you and those doggies need you. Stay warm. God bless.
Hi Russ...Have you tried ice fishing on that pond? I would think it would contain pickerel, pike and perch. These specie are great eating in the winter.
You could get an inexpensive ice chisel and a few tilts and watch from the comfort of your home.....Regards---David
Put some of the cut new wood on the deck to use straight away then you don’t have to walk so far to get wood.
Another great video, another great Red Green logging episode, another great beer review! It's all good!👍😁
Thanks Ken!
Russel buy yourself a cant hook to help roll the logs. Also hook your chain as short as you can to the ATV.
Excellent haul of firewood. You're going to need a bigger wood shed for storage.
Forsooth
Thanks Russ for making my Friday nights happy. Love Booxefest. You’re a cool guy. Cool videos as well.
RUSSELL ALWAYS AMAZING VIDEO THANKS FOR SHARING PLEASE Stay warm outthere
Hello Russell. Thanks for sharing your hard work. I like that beer! Stay safe.
It looks like you had lots of fun with your logs.
Not sure I'd call it fun, Sheila.
If you split the oak now it will season much faster than the two years you mentioned.
Nice video Rusco. Really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ken.
Upon returning home I went online abd found this trailer .no winches on this 1!
russell rapp the chein 1 more time o
round the log it is safer you are doing
a good job
When the branch you tried to use for leverage snapped and you flung it away...sooo relatable. Made me laugh. New here, great channel 👍
That was some impressive work Russel!
A nice and entertaining video. Perfect and bring home the wood fire in the winter.
Greetings from Sweden
Thanks Bo & Marie!
