I'm speaking from experience: both times I've been attacked with a bat I stepped in just as the swing begins. The end of the bat is in motion but the hands are moving at a slower rate of speed. As you move in (similar to a body block) "thread the needle" move your right hand in between the aggressor's hands gripped on the handle of the bat ◀️ and you body block and you start to turn in the direction of the swing while your left hand will grip both the aggressors hands on the end of the bat. THEIR centrifugal force will have them completely lose balance and they'll be flying like a Frisbee. YOU end up with the bat in your hands. Then you can use the bat and you desire. The aggressor might do a little check swing but WAIT UNTIL THEY COMMIT. Practice this in the Dojo and have the aggressor slowly speed up the swing. IT WORKS

Yes, moving back can put you in the worst place - receiving a full power strike from the end of the bat. Entering = no bat power. You then do your thing.
Yup. When I was a kid, I looked out the window and saw a gang of teens threatening my friend across the street. One had a golf club. My dad went across the street with his pipe in his mouth. The punk with the club wound up to take a swing and my dad stepped into him--literally body to body--and grabbed the shaft with both hands before he could get any speed. Rather than start a tug-of-war over the club, he slid one hand down just above the kid's hands and the other up toward the head, which gave him the leverage to easily twist the club down and backward so that it popped right out of the punk's hands, at which point they freaked out and took off.
My dad pointed out to me afterward that if someone has a bat, the safest place you can be is pressed up against him because you are impossible to hit and it actually makes holding the bat a liability. He also pointed out that if two people are pressed up against each other with their hands all tied up, the first one to break the other guy's nose with a head butt usually wins...

I’ll tell you what brother I wish I watched your videos before because in Afghanistan close quarters I’ve been hit with AK swung like a bat and I mean granted we got our vest and everything on but the first thing you want to do is block it with your arm and I’m here to tell you you get a hard hit. I’ve had my arm go numb for days, but I got brothers putting rounds down range. Do you know what I mean? I’m 58 I’m a retired army ranger and me and my kid will be practicing what you’re preaching. Not that I’m gonna need it but it’s good to know.

1st, the defender,student needs to put on a helmet and protective gear.2nd,the attacker using a foam bat,needs to attack like he really wants to hit you.Like you stole his lunch.Stop teaching choreographed routines. It should be speractic. Real,LIFE.
