After riding a ZX10R for over 10 years, I needed something more comfortable. I almost bought a Ninja 1000, but there were a few things it was missing. Glad I waited because the 2020, now named Ninja 1000SX, has everything I want. Cruise control and a display showing everything you could want.

I have a ‘12 ZX-10R that I bought new in ‘14 as a leftover inventory bike. I’ve loved it and it hasn’t given me any issues. However, I’m about to turn 40 and while I still live riding it, it’s not as comfortable as it used to be…plus there’s just so much unused potential with the bike. You can never really fully get out of it what the bike is capable of. I rode the Ninja 1000 many years ago, and loved it, but preferred the ZX-10R. Now I’m looking into trading in the ZX-10R for a new 1000SX. Glad to hear you’re really enjoying it. How has it been treating you? Do you regret getting rid of your other bike? Has it been good and reliable?

@@dknollRX7 I still haven't gotten a Ninja 1000SX yet. Back in 2018 I bought a 2011 GSX1250FA to take trips on while I was hoping to find a bike that has everything I wanted. It was a quarter of the price of a new Ninja 1000, so I kept my ZX10R to ride in the city to work and such.
Now ... I am not ready to sell both bikes yet for something like a Ninja 1000SX. First off all, every time I ride my ZX10R, I have a huge smile on my face. Still! Plus, like yours, mine never gives me issues. I have also gotten quite fond of the GSX1250FA. Though not as good performance as the Ninja 1000SX, it has good torque. Being de-tuned like this, the engine is said to last easily over 100k without issues. It also runs on regular gas, not premium like these performance bikes, so it is cheaper on trips. Plus, not all gas stations out in the mountains where I go on trips have premium. Finally, and this is kind of a big one, it has a large top case in addition to the hard panniers. The Ninja 1000SX can only have one or the other. I could use a seat bag behind me (tank bags are in the way for me), but I love that hard, lockable top case.
I'm pretty happy having both bikes over just one. I got a fun sport bike for short rides and a sport tourer with good luggage for trips. Both bikes are worth so little that something bad happening to either will hurt less than to a brand new bike (I'll still be heart-broken though). My recommendation is to do the same, but that is assuming you have the space, still enjoy the ZX10R, can do without the new features or find a cheap used bike with them ...
Sorry for the long reply. Do with this info as you will.

I don't think it was the greatest sport touring motorcycle out there. I think it's a good one, but certainly not the greatest. The Kawasaki concours is a great bike as well as the BMW r1100rt and let's not forget one of the very best out there and earliest in the sport touring field, the Honda sport tour 1100. Back in the '90s, the only sport tours you could only buy was the BMW and the Honda machines in the USA. Then Kawasaki quickly caught on with the concours. A few years later Yamaha and Suzuki join the party. Now there is a wide variety to choose from including the Yamaha tracer 900 GT. But, calling any one of them the greatest would be fool hearty in my estimation.

Interesting to find this video. I owned a 2017 N1K red in color just like that one and it was the first sport bike style bike I ever owned. I loved learning about how to ride these bikes and enjoyed that bike very much. However when I retired a year later I traded it in on the new at the time Honda Africa Twin which was also red and was too close to keep both I thought. Later after seeing pictures on my screen saver of that bike and remembering the growl of the engine I started to miss it. So when I ran across an unsold Kawasaki ZH2 at my local dealer I realized it was an opertunity to correct my mistake and even go beyond the capabilities of that bike. And OMG what a great decision. I added a nice windscreen and a top case and I now love the ZH2 more than anything! It is like riding a rocket ship. And while I wouldn’t call it a sport tourer it has all the qualities I’m looking for for shorter but exhilarating rides!!!!

No matter what aftermarket windscreen you choose, it's so much better with an MRA deflector on top. Bought it new in 2011, tricked it out, and sold it when I came into financial troubles. Found another a year ago with 15,000 miles on it and traded my 2019 MT07 in on it, even trade. No one that owns this bike had anything really bad to say about it. This is the first year it came out and I prefer it over the new ones with traction control, ABS, ride modes, etc...

Truly one of the most under-rated, under-appreciated bikes ever. I loved my '11, modded it for comfort and practicality. Of all the bikes I've owned over the last 40+ years (closing in on 60), my former N1K ranks right near the top. I was sad to sell her and worse, the first gen N1K, from '11-16, had poor resale value. I love bikes especially ones like this, I think they're cool AF, but for whatever reason I just can't seem to get past the fear of moving as quickly as this thing could potentially propel you forward. It's both exciting and terrifying to me, the latter being the stronger emotion. The thought of being in control of a bike, any bike makes me nervous. Having a slight tremor in both hand's doesn't help my confidence either but that's life some times you just have to work with what you have . I will always be a fan of them and the dude's and dudets that ride. Great Chanel and a very nice guy presenting it.

      James, I hear you.
I recently got back into riding after over 30 years without a bike.
Was nervous about speed and traffic also..
But what I did to start was bought a Kawasaki 900 vulcan custom cruiser. Simple and easy to ride. Not crazy fast.
Had a great 800 +km round trip in the mountains last summer.
Maybe if you start by taking a motorcycle safety course and go from there.
By being in a safe a controlled environment, you may find your tremors and fears are manageable.
It's a great feeling to ride.
      Good luck.

This motorcycle looks so fragile to compare with a road king. I can’t imagine riding 8 to 11 hours each day with that. The only real touring motorcycle from kawasaki is a vulcan. Perhaps, the nicest motorbike ever is the vulcan 1700 but japanese owners need sportbike.

But, what might i love more about the 1000SX? What might i miss about my C14? I do really like the power adjust windscreen. The power on the C14 seems pretty crazy once it's got the Mountain Runner tune applied. It's the little 1000SX engine actually faster and feel more powerful than the C14 land missile?

2016, I needed to replace my Fireblade. The 1000SX looks amazing and has the right weight / bhp numbers. Went to a Kawasaki dealer, with a Google Streetview country road route in my head. Sales guy convinced me to ride into town, I hated the route and the 1000SX, it just didn’t handle right. Six months later, I was still smitten with the looks and bought a red 2015 model. I got it home and my wife (the pillion) immediately pointed out the pillion seat on the 1000SX Tourer, was smaller than my Fireblade seat! Two long rides later, I discovered the problem. If you countersteer everywhere (and I do), the 1000SX steering fights you all the way, the steering is weighted to turn the wrong way. I took it to my bike shop to adjust, and it can’t be adjusted out. So I sold the 1000SX and bought a Triumph Sprint GT 1050, which is almost perfect until you try to take a hairpin fast. It seems you can’t better a Fireblade guys.

Gotta disagree, it's DEFF what you're riding, then it's fun no matter where you go 😆
You pretty much nailed it word for word at the start. I LOVE my 05 GXXR 600, my old body not so much. I want MY GSXR, but i want to ride it a full day, and for that i need some sort of comfort and some sort of luggage.
Recently rode my brother's Concourse, rode an FJR last week. Both of these bikes are NOT FOR ME. I walked on a sweet deal for the FJR. If it doesn't move me it's not worth anything (to me) I need the sportiest bike that can tour, not a sporty touring bike. That's just me...
It took me 3 videos and 3 reviews and you're the first to mention my hopes that this bike will serve me well. Found a slamming deal on a showroom condition bone stock. Yeah now with that comes $$$ for a lighter sweet note exhaust, maybe a higher fairing LEDs, who knows what else, but the means will hopefully justify the ends. The 2011s are going cheap due to the lack of nannies etc which i never had so I'll never miss.
    The test ride will tell.
Thank you for the great review(s) keep em coming !!!

I have the 2017 version of this bike, stock it had 142HP and weighed in at 240kg (529lb) My previous bike was a Daytona 675 with 128HP/184kg wet (405lb) . It's close but a modern supersport will walk away from it , my Daytona also had a higher topspeed, atleast indicated. There's no competition in terms of usability and comfort though, the Kaw owns any sportbike there.
