"Racism is a bonding process." As a white kid who grew up male in a small majority white town in canada this is absolutely true, racism, homophobia, sexism, etc were all used in that way, to determine who's "cool" and who isn't. Including any kids who were minorities themselves. If you were black and had an issue with any of the constant racism you were just "sensitive" (despite the fact those same kids would defend christianity and the police like you just attacked their grandmother anytime someone criticized either)

@asia1174 Uhh? I think that's being a bit dramatic, lol. There is a VAST difference between being a heartless bigot making jokes at the expense of marginalized people, and making dark jokes. If i couldn't make jokes about my lived trauma and degenerative disease leading me to a rapidly approaching end, I would have deleted my system32 a looong time ago. It genuinely fills me with rage when people try to police my catharsis or say, "it doesn't mean it's healthy" as if they are mental health professionals or even know what is best for me. My therapists were always supportive of it and laughed along with my heartily.
Morbid humor is a part of life. It can help us deal with the horrors of this world in an upbeat, positive way. When you've cried and cried, if feels really good to have a nice sardonic release. It doesn't mean you've got something wrong with your ability to feel empathy. It isn't too sensitive to care about hurting groups of people who suffered systematic abuse, not at all. It IS too sensitive (and condescending) if you look down on other people who have a giggle to lighten the sting of existence. I strongly disagree with conflating bigotry with dark humor.

Whats wild about that is that even when your ancestors are relatively distant (im talking 2-3x great grandparents sort of deal) you have higher than 1.28% according to blood quantum, which is really a myth anyway but thats a different can of worms- so thats like literally one person 😭.. and using percentage as your only way to claim being indigenous is suspicious because there is so much more to indigenous identity than that, imo. While she still was married and in proximity to her child. When she identified as a cis man, nobody had any problem with it.
Now that she’s transitioned, transphobes can’t wait to point out Ava’s a predator. And she is.

Also anecdotally I'd say it's relatively common for autistic people to deconstruct capitalism, to generally find the concepts of commerce etc. difficult and stressful to engage with, and we are generally more likely than average to be non-conformists (not to mention the highly elevated rates of queer and trans autistics). He's still exploiting the situations people are in, even if he's helping some of them in the process. Like he could be using his wealth to spread awareness of how this stuff even happens in the first place and why it's bad that it falls to charity to deal with it, or doing things like funding free clinics that could help a lot of people long-term - instead it's all done on camera as a feelgood spectacle, including randomly giving people big novelty cheques or a car just because it'll get a reaction. So it doesn't feel like a big leap to me that he'd actually create a bad situation to exploit it for content (or think that giving people some cash fixes the problem)

There is a way to use edginess to challenge the status quo, subvert expectation or expose the inherent ridiculousness of prejudice. Making people uncomfortable with their own complacency is one of the best ways to get a rational person to confront their part in systemic oppression of The Other. Greoge Carlin knew how to do this, he was smart, sarcastic and very effective at challenging preconceived ideas.

The best way to fight a sea of misinformation is to prioritize one's own integrity. That if someone assumes something about you, you will correct them when they get it wrong. That you'll keep your articulation as honest as you know how and own up when something you said turned out to be off the mark.
People are so sick of the empty dishonesty as every person with a decent smile tries to become Their Own Brand. Holding your own honesty in high reguard will help you find others that care about it, too.

I'm surprised it's a big stink now. And that goes to anyone that has a edgy era. Now I, growing up did have guys that tried to test me, and I never let it go too far. Like no one could say nigga to me, but I've heard EVERY white excuse in the book. But while i do have fire from them. It's obvious that they have no black people around or maybe 1-2. It's a weird game, because a lot of these people will maybe meet a handful of black people OR EVEN NOT SEE ONE EVER WHICH IS WILD.
But for everyone that gets appalled, when the only good space you had growing up is surrounded by white people, you try to fit in. It'll always start with "oh don't be one of those offended types" and putting your foot down racially gets you ostracized.

Like my example of edgy is when me and my best friend who’s second generation from Mexico are going bar for bar at each other in a fun way when we talk about the difference in our upbringings or culture. Like we’ve both hit each other with jokes but we also both are VERY aware and comfortable. Now me as the white guy will obviously take the most self humor because let’s be real, white people are really fun to make fun of. But in some ways it is a great way to bring people together. We’re best friends of like 8 years. I hope this doesn’t sound like an “I’m not like them” comment, but there is definitely a line when it does go too far. It's even more frustrating to think on how people who usually run defense for the bigotry feel as though the dehumanization of brown and black people is some "right of passage" and never something to be ashamed of. Like how do their spines not rupture from bending over backward for discrimination?! Their "edgelord" days were years of trauma that victims have to sift through and somehow come to terms with. We need to be more considerate of the various oppressed communities and how we may indirectly or directly perpetuate their suffering. Like Idubbbz, who got pretty dark, but in his intent was more nuanced and had a point behind it all, to the point where there's that infamous clip of Idubbbz uncomfortable with H3 saying slurs just to say them and missing the point. Yet, his audience never truly cared, and it turns out all they wanted was drama videos and slurs. As someone who grew up being told we were 1% Blackfeet Native American, I never believed it because my parents never respected the culture.(I'm white as fuck and so are my parents) It seemed like a slap to the face to others in my class who were ACTUALLY Native American.
It REALLY bothers me that no one who is a minority can have a bad day, unless they wanna be labeled every stereotype under the sun, while their white counterparts are just "going through a tough time" as if minorities arent doing that every day of their lives. And certain people just love to perpetuate those minority stereotypes while giving others a pass.

Being a southern white boy is definitely a risk factor for thinking it’s ok to drop the n-word on the internet, but I feel it should be said that, even amongst southern white people, this kind of behavior is STILL VERY MUCH A CHOICE. A choice Mr. Beast seemed pretty happy to make. I’m a white girl from eastern North Carolina and I can assure you that, even in this neck of the woods, the only social circles where it’s not taboo for a non-black person to use the n-word are the ones where anti-black racism is openly tolerated and encouraged. Southern white people understand very well that the n-word is hate speech. Our ancestors invented the word for that express purpose. So I don’t believe for a second that Mr. Beast didn’t understand the line he was crossing in that video. He was being racist, and he seemed pretty proud of it to me.

The reason you don't see white people accepting 'racist' as a label for people easily is because there's degrees of racism, and the noun is traditionally reserved, especially among those not interested in social justice, for people that consciously choose to embrace racist ideas. It works like this: "saying the N-word is inappropriate., but calling someone the N-word is racist". Not saying I agree with it, but a distinction between my dad thinking a joke about black people lowering property values is okay (it's not) and my uncle complaining about 'the N*****' in reference to Obama during his presidency, well, I think that's pretty useful. That's a useful distinction. My dad does racist stuff, but he also hires and builds homes for immigrants. My uncle does good stuff too, like stay dead.

This just makes me want to see a video essay on what indications and traits that make ppl able to identify that “something’s off” with creators way before they ever get cancelled. There’s gotta be some sociological or psychological correlation between nature, nurture, and common sense as to why some ppl are able to be easily manipulated by ppl like this while others are just kinda waiting 🫥for them to realize how fucked up they are. My theory is it’s marginalized ppl- likely because they’re socialized to be on alert for certain “unempathetic” (cough cough genuinely problematic) red flags to keep themselves and the people in the community safe yknow? Whereas those in positions of power don’t necessarily always have the same level of urgency around needing to learn how to discern friend from foe. In that case I would find it plausible that due to that level of ignorance they would essentially turn to fearmongering of otherness out of fear because they’ve been caught unaware. But I digress, anyone can be manipulated by an online persona- but I do find the resounding cultural split to be a bit fascinating when it comes to analyzing how much benefit of the doubt if any at all which we entrust to creators on the internet through parasocial relationships.

Agreed; people that have the privilege to not worry so much about how they present or how to fit in are less likely to be in a kind of fight or flight mindset. They don’t have to question people’s intents so much and even identify with figures in power that are typically white, straight, etc. so they’re much more likely to give them a pass when there are certain tells suggesting the figure is not so great. On the other hand, I also find it interesting and tragic that there are vulnerable, marginalized groups that also get blindsided by creators but for different reasons. Take the minecraft community for example, which consists of a lot of queer and neurodivergent people that are looking for a safe space to connect and share interests. Many creators in it are much the same, but there have been a few that have posed as allies and accrued a respectful audience, having a safe space for people, only to turn out to be a horrid person. I think the difference is how people in power got their power-the ones that are really big names given power by a majority that automatically relates to them (even if a minority disapproves, their voices are overpowered by the majority) versus the ones that appeal to a minority to get power over them. Both suck.

@@bell_knight Yeah especially with the trying to find social approval from legitimized, white male figures mindset-like stans trying to hold onto a guy bc he displayed basic human decency once and that’s more than they see in real life in the people around them, and when the creator then says something incredibly icky that targets some of their fans, even the affected fans try to justify it or downplay it because they usually seek so much comfort from the guy. That cognitive dissonance results in a lot of hurt I feel like. But of course, to the fans/ex-fans that do speak out, they’re perceived as one of the bigoted outsiders trying to ruin a reputation or attack the community. I say this as someone deeply involved with the fandom since 2012. Teen girls are especially stuck walking the line between finding acceptance from the figure or realizing the figure is taking advantage of their dedication. It’s a thin line to walk because misogynists attack girls all the time for existing in a fandom, so it’s like, “Either this creator is wrong or these nasty old twitter men are wrong,” and it’s hard to agree when a creator sucks because then you’re agreeing with the nasty old twitter misogynists, the very people you’re trying to escape. I really do hate when people make jokes about women and marginalized people making dedicated fandoms. It makes it so much harder to call people out within them because its supposed to be safety from the rest of the world and people that make those jokes.

I still remember the horror on her face that day, and it's something I will always remember when racists and apologists try and say kids acting like that is 'harmless.' Kids turn into adults. I would've been a racist adult if it weren't for my mother being a better person than me.
