I played Judas in my university years. I have always loved this song and Hunter brings such simplicity and poignance to the performance. Truly beautiful and understated. Simply timeless and Stephen Schwartz at his best.
This song hits really close to home with all that has been going on the past week. Hopefully we can build a beautiful city as United human beings #GeorgeFloyd #buildacityunited
I got to lead this song in a college production in 2011. It came to my heart this last weekend when a shooting occurred on the street I grew up on. It's terrible when a loss of life brings people together, because we should have been united in the first place.
In the movie, this was played as they frolicked thru the streets. Loved their joy. This version gets me right in that hopeful place, that somehow we can somehow overcome all the tragedies of today, and find our way back.
How beautiful is this version with Hunter Parrish singing! After the Tony performance last night, I was listening to different versions and found this from the revival of “Godspell”. What a treasure!
I just found my new audition song. Absolutely beautiful song and beautifully sung. I am in a production of Godspell at a community theater. We just started rehearsing.
0:13 Out of the ruins and rubble, out of the smoke 0:25 Out of our night of trouble, can we see a ray of hope? 0:37 One pale thin ray, reaching for the day
This song will forever be in my memory.. I auditioned for my first community theater play with this song and got the part! I'll always look back on this song when I audition for other shows. No joke, I walked into that audition with no prior experience (besides singing lessons for 3/4 of a year) and came out victorious. Best part of all, I auditioned for a VERY hard musical.. Sweeney Todd to be exact.
OMG!!!! I've LOVED this guy since the first time saw him. ALWAYS thought he was the PERFECT guy. Now, hearing him sing ...LETS JUST SAW, NOW IM CERTAIN HE IS A PERFECT ALL AROUND GUY. U SING IT HUNTER PARRISH THORPE. This has had me in tears. Cant wait to find more songs that u sing.💝💝💝💝💝
"when your trust is all but shattered" it has been completely shattered by someone I love, but I'm slowly building myself up again. Thank you God for being beside me in my darkest hours. God really is the only one to trust, people can let you down, God never does.
Though the original version written in 1972 for the Broadway show has a more jaunty, jovial tone, composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, re-wrote this version after the Los Angeles Riots, in 1993, inspired by the ordinary people (lead by Edward James Almos), who just started to gather in mass days after the riots and begin to clean up the streets.
Out of the ruins and rubble, Out of the smoke, Out of our night of struggle Can we see a ray of hope? One pale thin ray reaching for the day... We can build a beautiful city. Yes, we can(Yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city. Not a city of angels, But we can build a city of man. We may not reach the ending, But we can start. Slowly but surely mending, Brick by brick, Heart by heart. Now, maybe now, We start learning how. We can build a beautiful city. Yes we can(Yes, we can). We can build a beautiful city. Not a city of angels, But we can build a city of man. When your trust is all but shattered. When your faith is all but killed. You can give up bitter and battered, Or you can slowly start to build! A Beautiful City. Yes, we can.(Yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city, Not a city of angels, But finally a city of man!
Middle TN State University did the first production of Godspell after the Broadway production. I did it 3 more times in other years : Jeffery twice and Herb the final time. I think this NEW version of “Beautiful City” should be the anthem for COVID. But, I guess that’s just me, I guess.
Just perfect! Although I'll always cherish the movie soundtrack (like the Broadway album as well but not so much as), this is also beautiful. Disney-movie voice, sweet magical, thank you for this wholesome upload!
@@johndennis879 Yeah, sure...Democrats are going to kill the nation...you're here calling for the death of all of those that disagree with you, but they're the bad ones. Sure, bud.
Absolutely amazing and I wanted to share the kid version because my child is in middle school, this was her solo and she was very nervous but this is what she did with this song...ugghhh... I'm having trouble adding it

When I saw Godspell. I cried at this beautiful moment. I also realized that when Be More Chill came out and I heard Michael I instantly knew that I had met George Salazar
One of the most naturally beautiful male voices I have ever heard.
I have sung and been involved with music for 30 years.
Me, too. Total agreement. Plus, he's just gorgeous.
Isn’t it just?!? The best I’ve EVER heard that song!
They should list the pianist too in the credits - just perfect
I love his voice and this song is in my range so i really enjoy singing this along
I think he and Michael Arden ("Out There" from Hunchback of Notre Dame) are in a close tie with each other for best male vocalist.
Our broken society needs to embrace this. Please.
❤ I am grateful for this exquisite song! I return to listen on days that are rough. Today is rough.
It has been my earworm for the last week. I'm not a religious person, but appreciate the love and light of this musical.
This musical was not religious. Don't let Christ-stains try to appropriate it. They are soulless as well as mindless.
We did Godspell my senior year in high school in 1975 and sang this for graduation. This is the most beautiful version I have heard.
We sang it in chorus in middle school.
Composer must think he died and went to heaven hearing this performance. Glad someone said the pianist’s name on here - he is as perfect as the voice.
This is a great example of a song being improved 40 years later. Lyrically and as an arrangement. And Hunter is amazing. Just perfection all around.
This is such an ethereal performance by Hunter Parrish. Treat yourself and take 4 minutes to listen and reflect.
His tone is amazing
For anyone who has had to rise out of "ruins and rubble," this song can help. Just beautiful. We are all so much stronger than we know.
this song helped me a lot to unite my neighbors after hurricane ian to rebuild our community.
absolutely beautiful - the song, the voice, the accompanying piano - and of course the message. .
It is rare that a song brings tears to my eyes. This one does that in a major way.
Beautiful vocal.
🥹🥲😭😭😭😭😇

I keep coming back to this. There isn't a word that can do this justice.
Unbelievable how beautiful this is.

I know GODSPELL and I know it well. Hunter's version of this song is brilliant!

I sang this in elementary school, this song was coming to mind recently.
0:13 Out of the ruins and rubble, out of the smoke
0:25 Out of our night of trouble, can we see a ray of hope?
0:37 One pale thin ray, reaching for the day
I love this song it's beautiful and I love it mostly because I can sing and helps with my range.

So much beautiful.... lovely version. I think this works better than the original.

Timely.
This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I really love this version you did. Nice job and nice voice.
Best cover of this song I've heard yet.
I'm pretty sure he's from the new cast. So it's not exactly a cover.
Beautiful. ❤

Singing this for choir tour!
You know when your doing something right,
Out of the ruins and rubble,
Out of the smoke,
Out of our night of struggle
Can we see a ray of hope?
One pale thin ray reaching for the day...
We can build a beautiful city.
Yes, we can(Yes, we can)

En la versión original pasan desapercibidos muchos de los aciertos de esta preciosa canción, bravo por compositor, arreglista e intérprete!
Just watched the Democratic Virtual Convention...how wonderful to have the Universe show me this fitting / beautiful song and beautiful voice

Found myself here right after the election results were certified. If you know, you know.
I don't understand the republican party's association with christianity. They don't vote for christian values.
Sickening
so good...whatever happened to him????
Credit to the piano player?
I think I read somewhere that he came up with the new arrangements for this revival. More choral harmonies, and improved realization.
Charlie Alterman!!!

Anyone here from Kory? 💓
Such a beautiful song! My wife and I just recorded our version of this on my channel. Would love to have you check it out!

Get rid of Trump , and we might have a chance !!!!!
Sorry I hate that they changed the arrangement and slowed it down like this. It was a great upbeat piece
Hate is quite a strong word regarding a song... really? Hate?
Both are good in their own way. Not either/or; both/and.
