My Family brought me a Betta when I was in various hospitals from November 2017 to April 2018, getting up and caring for him was the best therapy I could get! So I can see both sides of the discussion. When I got home he got put in a 55 gallon tank to live out his days, one of my favorite fish of all time!

I got my halfmon from a chain pet store when his fins were all the way rotted off. The employees had already started treating him, when they heard I had a cycled 10 gallon they gave him to me for free. He is doing very well 2 years later, all his fins have grown back beautifully!

One topic I want to say personally is that, there's a lot of people that look at this whole topic in black and white. Like "don't ever buy from big chains because less profit means less bettas being tortured" but the reality is that there will always be rude and obvious/ignorant customers that still buy them and neglect them. So many people are stuck in a misconception or stick to outdated information. I've had so many people say "back in my day we did this..." or when you try to explain them some very basics about keeping tanks they say how "keeping fish wasn't that complicated when I had them" and it frustrates me and makes me want to say some kind of reply back but sometimes the best thing to do may be to talk to them politely so just maybe they can try to learn a little more than what they knew.

This^^ big stores will always replace the fish. So if you want to save one little fish then go for it- it makes no difference to them. I would totally buy from a local mom and pop store tho!- but I have none anywhere close to where I live :( all I have are chain stores so I have to buy from them :(

I assume thos fish keeper who talks about how simple they keep their fish "back in the days" probably believe that the fishes they're keeping live less than half than their actual lifespan.

My little female red veil tail was WHITE when I bought her in her sad little cup at petsmart. As soon as I got her into my established 10 gallon tank with clean water, and the right temperature, she turned scarlet red. She is a fighter. Her first birthday is coming up 😍
Edit: I didn’t know you can ask for them to be free! But to be honest, all the bettas looked pretty bad in that store. 🥺

Regardless of other people's feelings on whether or not you get a Betta from a big box store, I don't regret getting Persephone out of there. She needed someone to help her. I can tell she has fight in her. She deserves a long happy life and I'm going to give that to her.

I found one that was in his cup for over 6 months. He looked so bad, torn fins, skinny. The clerk told me their water was only changed once a week and they were fed only blood worms. They sold him to me for $4.99. I took him home and put him in a heated, filtered 3 gallon tank. He really perked up and started changing colors. His fins grew back and I have had him almost a year and he’s in his own 10 gallon tank, sponge filter, heater, live plants and beautiful. Fully regrown fins and midnight black with blue streaks in his fins. No meds at all, just clean tanks and a variety of food and reg tank maint. I cycled his tank before adding him also.

My husband and I brought a tiny little pink Betta from petsmart , they wouldn't give for free but I couldn't leave him there , he has so small at first I though it was female. We brought all supplies from a small run family store, currently have the tank running and going to add him soon . Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.

I rescued my little betta from Petsmart. He had a bladder infection and was floating on top of his little cup. He was treated and happily lived for 18 months with me until I had to travel and left him with my parents. It is VERY hot in their house during summer and when I picked him up he was all black - his normal color is red and positioned vertically. I wasn't able to rescue him again. 😢 I was too late 😪😔
Be careful, if water is too warm it's very harmful for your betta

Thanks for this. I have a hard time going into aquarium shops that store Bettas in maybe 4 cups of water, usually smaller. It just disgusts me. I sometimes deal with Pet Land and while they care for their aquarium fish well for a BB store, they do not have the same care for Bettas! In particular the Glow Bettas which are still living animals. Their best Bettas ironically are the fish they keep in the plant aquariums. I am guess ING to keep some kind of bio-film or food for the plants, each aquarium has one line Betta. They get lots of room and are obviously in better shape. I do not like to think of the others in their tiny storage containers. I have also read a lot of pro's and cons about saving them. If they make money from. Them they will keep stocking them. I buy all my meds etc for them from Amazon so I just buy the fish from the store. Trying to pick one that still feels a little energetic is very difficult. Recently I came across some stuff that you add to the water during "Daily Water Changes?" Thinking it is for the tiny little containers they promote. It is called "Betta Revive." It says it is for prevention of Protozoan Diseases, Bacterial Diseases, fungal diseases. It is meant to give a speedy recovery. It contains methylene Blue (

    • @CreativePetKeeping

I think that even if they used the beanies or larger containers like breeders do then the fish would fair much better. Since it's only a temporary way to keep them I think there is more flexibility in how this can be done but their basic needs need to be met.
Keeping bettas in tanks at fish stores is also a great idea as long as they don't get put with fish that will nip their fins ^_^ I'm glad that LFS are so forword thinking!

Betta fish is the fish that got me into the hobby. (Actually I had goldfish first, but they always died). I don't want to reward petco due to the way they keep their bettas. Just as others mentioned the dollar a gallon sale is certainly what keeps me going in. I am also not going to protest against someone that buys a betta there either. It could be a child and this betta could spark their interest in the hobby. I do however, when I see someone getting a betta and they go to grab that tank that is horribly small, I just say "make it at least a 5 gallon and you and your fish will both be happier. If they are receptive to that, I tell them the importance of a pump, heater, and some other things needed for bettas as well.

It would be nice to see more local breeders in the USA. One tricky part is that its hard to offer a wide variety of betta types and colors when u breed by yourself.
You can also import bettas from overseas and sell them directly if you get an import liscence. This way u can choose which breeders you want to support (there are both bad and really great breeders overseas) and offer a wide variety of bettas that you take good care of.

@@CreativePetKeeping I would love to support good breeders as well as breed my own, while it is unfortunate that breeding options are limited here I had come to the realization that importing bettas would be necessary for a store. I work at a smaller chain, still a chain but it does make it so difficult that corporate limits us to what we are or aren't allowed to do or use. The bettas where I work get the tank water from the main tanks and the bettas have a piece of hornwort with them but I still wish we could keep them in something bigger. I feel like the worst part is that even when you tell people basic care how they can still be ignorant and ignore it. I was able to convince someone to get a 5 gallon set up this week but it gives me anxiety whenever I explain betta care because people can be so nasty about it. I refuse sales when I can but sometimes it happens when I'm not around. 😬

It’s OK we just need to buy the cheap stuff so we can rescue more fish. But I agree something needs to be done. I feel like maybe we should get together and sign petitions sent directly to company CEOs. I really don’t think they are neglecting the fish. I think it’s a combination of the shipping shock and customers coming in and shaking cups and causing stress and the fish being in small cups. I think just a few minor changes would probably significantly improve the whole process. I love your channel name, and I am a new subscriber. As a librarian of 12 years, I agree that books are a better source of information than surfing the Internet. Of course if you know, specifically, what you are looking for, the Internet is very useful; but books cover topics that you didn’t know you should search for.

Nothing is really going to change until there is legislation enforced like in many European countries. Not all of us have local "mom and pop" fish stores btw....Either I have to support the big box stores or quit the hobby. And rescue is a pretty loose term, if I see a fish that I like and can give it a better home, is that really a rescue? Don't get me wrong, I hate seeing Bettas being sold in those little cups...but I also see employees at my local big box stores doing water changes, treating sick fish, and sometimes even giving good advice. Honestly, the whole hobby can be seen as unethical in one way or another...especially if you can see behind the scenes of the way that some (even most) fish are bred or wild caught, distributed, etc. And nothing in this hobby kills or damages more fish than new hobbyist that don't do basic research. In the end, if you go into a big box store and see a Betta in a little cup and you like it, buy it...call it a rescue if you would like, lol! The most important thing is to do your research first to make sure you can give it a good home.

I had some concern where this was going in the beginning of the video - I would be even more drastic. Just getting you in the store to save a fish is a win. Even a saved fish is the basis for further animal cruelty. It sounds cruel but leaving these fish to their fate is imho the best way to assure either better treatment in the future. It is the only way to teach them that living things cannot be treatex like packaged goods.

I literally had to explain to a group of employees a couple of days ago that selling 2 koi fish to a guy looking for tankmates for his arowana was not only a bad idea but ethically immoral. In the end the customer listened to my suggestion and did not get the koi. Smdh when I discussed training for the employees with the manager, his response was they're kids you can't teach them anything. Petsmart fails again.

I have a terrible time choosing fish. I only have room for one betta, and I fret about the ones I decided not to buy. Does anyone else feel that way, too?

Big box stores don't know how to treat fish ( I tryed to save 2 betta from petsmart they both dyed a week later)

PetSmart employee recently humiliated me by refusing to sell 5 nano fish saying that adding 5 nano fish to 12 other nano fish in a 22 gallon long planted tank is "overstocking". He made himself look professional and all.... There is no point in arguing with inept but confident person. I wonder how he explains his half dead bettas in cups

Would you be willing to share the name of the pet stores you visited that took good care of their bettas? Would love to support!

On point! If they're giving it for free, then sure I'll take some fish. If Imma pay for it even for a discount, then fuck it. I'm not giving them anything for doing a shitty job taking care of their animals. Just go to these big chain stores, take the sick fish, and walk away. Don't buy anything. Any amount you pay, no matter how small, will just circulate in their account and it will contribute to acquiring a new fish that will suffer

They won’t see they are losing money because they sell a lot more than Bettas.

My question is... why hasn't anyone ever tried to implement animal abuse laws into this situation, and put a stop to it!? Technically, with today's animal abuse laws, it's a felony to murder an animal. Fish are animals. They're pets. Someone in a position of power, should step to the plate, and do something about this.

Its insane that big box stores are allowed to sell live animals. What you do to save these animals is go to your local pet shop. Spend the extra money on the gear at a small shop.
