'In the Wake of Poseidon' is another great sophomore album, and is definitely overshadowed because of its predecessor and one of Prog Rock's most and if not the best album.
I love "Pictures of a City" and "Catfood" The layout of the record follows ITCOTCK's blueprint, for the most part. The Devil's Triangle" is loosely based upon the Holst piece "Mars". The band had to rework this piece and make it sound less like "Mars" due to the fact that the band sought unsuccessfully to get permission from Gustav Holst's estate to get permission to cover and just call the piece "Mars". Probably hear the top half of KC's catalogue, if ranked.
ITWOP is such an Epic Prog Masterpiece from Crimson !! The words, singing, Drumming and that Beautiful "Mellotron" everywhere !! : D Especially the ending with the harmonies, Drum passages and sweeping Mellotron !
Brilliant choice. I was 16 when it came out in 1970 in the UK and already had nearly worn out my vinyl of "Court...". Luckily all my mates at the time were also into these albums and prog from other bands. From different members of our crowd, I was swiftly introduced to Nursery Cryme, Meddle, In The Land Of Grey and Pink, The Yes Album, Tarkus, Argus, Aqualung and more. We also bought European imports by the likes of Focus, Kayak and Alquin. The early 70s were bloody great for music both rock. metal and prog. Thanks for having a great channel!
Heck of a choice Pete, I almost thought you might choose 'Lizard' as the follow up to this one! This album seems to take what 'Court' started and really push the prog rock boundaries. Mel Collins and Keith Tippett shine here, Fripp handles the Mellotron work in the absence of Ian McDonald. Neat little snippet - they almost hired an unknown vocalist named Elton John to sing on this record.
I prefer this album over the debut. Still ITCOTCK is incredible. I love the heavy style drumming on the soft ballad title track the nightmarish Devils Triangle so foreword thinking. Cat Food fun playful song.
A very very special album. It is in my top 3 KC albums and it is always the first album I think of when I hear the words King Crimson. Definitely my favorite King Crimson album cover.
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. An excellent choices for the Classic Album Rewind series. It didn't get much, if any, airplay here in north central Florida upon its release even though the first local FM 'rock' station started up about the same time. Or, if it was played, it was at a late hour when no radio was on. It's hard to think of an album that would not be overshadowed by the band's iconic debut and I bought it from a cutout bin but didn't give it much attention at the time. The 14 year old brain was occupied with lots of other thoughts and music. But have been revisiting King Crimson's discography due to the repeated SoT discussions of their albums in various shows. So, time to give this one a rewind and listen to it again. Thanks, Pete, for the always entertaining show.
A great and underrated album. Pictures of a City is one of my favourite KC songs. Also, you described The Devil’s Triangle as “Mellotron Heaven”...maybe it’s more like “Mellotron Hell”!
ITWOP was an album that I wasn't into in the beginning of my KC journey. As the years have pasted this album has grown on me so much, great album! Nice choice Pete!
This album is a good follow up to In the Court of the Crimson King. I feel like it's a bit overshadowed because it came out shortly after Crimson King.
Couple of weeks ago I was wondering whether In the Wake of Poseidon was going to turn up in this series. Lo and behold, there it is. Nice show in a very nice series.
Awesome choice Pete! Thank you so much for the verbal description of all the lovely heads on Wake as well, another favorite ; I mean something had to follow Court - indeed perhaps progs most difficult follow up!
Cheers Pete! All Hail the Crimson King! This album is very underrated. I prefer Greg Lake singing Cadence and Cascade. Imagine if Lake had stuck around for Lizard! That would be in my top 3. This album already is. I like the additional jazz instrumental Groon as well.
In the past I was always that guy who said "oh, it just sounds like the first album gone wrong". Recently however, I've grown to appreciate it for what it is and have some found my own meaning regarding it as a concept album without really looking into what the whole thing is about. The short version: never one of my favourites but there are gems and a growing understanding of it.
That I actually got to see them do Cat Food last tour was worth the price of admission itself! The Islands band did a version of Groon, which was the Cat Food B-side on the Ladies of the Road live set. Absolutely stunning. Too bad they didn't include on ITWOP. Can't wait to see them on September 11th in DC!!
A great album, only just pipped by their incredible debut. Wonderful contrast of styles, from the jazzy ‘pictures’ to the dreamy ‘cadence’ to playful ‘cat food’ to the epic title track (my 3rd fave KC song after Epitaph & Starless). However, the Devil’s Triangle is probably the most frightening piece of music I have ever heard!
Robert Fripp did put out a version of Cadence and Cascade with a Greg Lake vocal guide track. It used to be available for free download but I'm not sure if it's still up. Pretty cool though.
Musically, Cat Food and Pictures of a City are basically blues tracks. And I love the Devils Triangle, more so than Mars, the only exception being that goofy bass line towards the end.
Hello Pete, thanks for your thoughts on this brilliant record. I was fortunate enough to see Crimson live twice in 1971 at Cambridge and the infamous Weeley festival. At Cambridge they finished the set with a blazing Mellotron loop (the end of In The Wake Of Poseidon I think) which continued once they left had the stage. They played most of the first two albums - an amazing experience. Then came Lizard and Islands, a different direction but also perfection in my opinion. Cheers, Paul
Cadence and Cascade is the greatest King Crimson song Gordon Haskell ever sang in my opinion With Peter Giles playing bass on this album, this album is both a sequel to In the Court of The Crimson King and The Cheerful Insanity of Giles Giles and Fripp!
You are in for a real treat. I wish I cpuld hear the first seven 69-75 again for the first time! Bewarned tho- none of them sound anything like 'Discipline' lol
@@mrheem44 Yeah. I've heard bits and pieces of the early catalog. I'm familiar with the song 21st Century Schizoid Man and have heard most of the album Red. I'm more of a pop/rock guy so the structures can be a challenge for me. I lose interest in long songs sometimes
Great record. Darker than the debut except for "Cat Food" of course! I love this album but I gotta be in the mood for it. Especially The Devil's Triangle. Wicked!
Pete, i have a request for you : ) Could you do an episode about best solo albums of members of well known bands from 70s, 80s and 90s and 00s? That is a subject i would like to learn more.
I was devastated when this album came out and I bought and played it. I tried my best to see some good in it but nope. I hated it and that hasn't changed with time. It took until Discipline to get me interested in KC again.
Pete hope you can review motorhead Hammerstein 4cd box set in the next couple weeks 4 concerts from 81 should be great there sure some great box set this year hope this keeps up great year to collect music
Personally, I think ITCOTCK is heavily overrated as an album. Yes, it was very influential and was one of the first true prog-rock albums. But honestly, I just think King Crimson has so many better albums, including In the Wake! In the Wake of Poseidon is a top 10 Crim song for me, and the rest of the album is no slouch. Great video!
It's a great underrated album. Yes, a bit too close in form to its classic predecessor. Love Keith Tippett's piano playing. "Cadence and Cascade" is a beautiful song.
Have this on vinyl since forever. Not as good as the classic debut or the following release, Lizard, but still like it, though always skip The Devil's Triangle
This album is one of the first three from K Crimson , these are the bests King Crimson albums along with Lizard and In The Court of the Crimson King. To me the rest are very noisy .
The songs are great but it suffering a little bit of short - long tracks dilemma the same way Yes with Fragile. The debut was amazing, it was hard to put another as great. Discipline and Red are better but just slightly. 4.5/5.
Poseidon really fine album though not my favourite from the band (I love Wetton era albums the most). Kinda underrated like Queen's A day at the races. It's not a copy of Court! Take catfood and devil's triangle to prove that. Cadence and cascade one of the most beautiful lyrical songs in King Crimson catalogue. Yeah, kinda overlooked album but ironically their highest charting - number 4 in UK charts in May 1970.
"Cat Food" blows. The Greg Lake "Cadence & Cascade" is 100x better than the Haskell (I can even forgive the terrible, no good very bad lyrics when Lake sings them) . I skip CF and switch in the Lake C&C and it's a much better album.
Although I recognize that they're an excellent band, with notable musicians, I particularly don't like them. The songs are very psychedelic and melancholic.
'In the Wake of Poseidon' is another great sophomore album, and is definitely overshadowed because of its predecessor and one of Prog Rock's most and if not the best album.
Perfect choice. Quite underrated
This has Sidney's favorite King Crimson song: Cat Food. Every time we hang out he wants to hear it. Whatcha gonna do?
I love "Pictures of a City" and "Catfood" The layout of the record follows ITCOTCK's blueprint, for the most part. The Devil's Triangle" is loosely based upon the Holst piece "Mars". I'm gonna pull a Chuck Alvarez here: "love it love it."

Bryan Ferry auditioned too. Then Fripp suggested he use his management.
Thank God Elton John didn't end up on this lp.
I prefer this album over the debut. Still ITCOTCK is incredible. I love the heavy style drumming on the soft ballad title track the nightmarish Devils Triangle so foreword thinking. Cat Food fun playful song.
My all time favourite song is the album title track, very underrated album all around as were both Lizard and Islands.
A very very special album. It is in my top 3 KC albums and it is always the first album I think of when I hear the words King Crimson. Definitely my favorite King Crimson album cover.
Thank you for this King Crimson rewind . I don’t have this CD / release. I’ll check it out. Life is better with music. * All the damn time!!🎤🎸🎵🥁

KIng Crimson is great! Thanks for these videos!

Great show Pete as always👍👍
I love it.Pictures of a city slays!
4:32 best part
Definitely underrated. Such a brilliant record that ranks right alongside the band’s best. Great Video Pete👍

In the Wake of Poseidon is my favorite King Crimson album.
Great info ! I never knew about the cover faces representing earthly elements. Cheers!
I always saw the first two albums as a part 1 and part 2.
Another hidden gem from the epic catalogue of King Crimson and a great follow up to Court In The Crimson King
Listened to/drummed along to this vinyl recently, it's great!
Awesome choice. Love Crimson! Cheers from Hayward, CA…!
My absolute favourite of theirs!
bought this before in the court
Greg lake great vocalist,
great band great album.
"In The Wake Of Poseidon" is probably my favorite Crimson album. "Lizard" and "Islands" are VERY close seconds!

Legendary band, this album is a top 3 in their catalog.
Going to share this with Mr. Fripp and see what he has to say. We've been good acquaintances since 1985 when I studies guitar with him long ago.
Liked this album 20 years ago. Heard last week and didn't like it. But then just listened to it again and liked it.

They also put out In The Wake of Poseidon (Greg Lake Vocal) and both are on King Crimson's UA-cam channel
@@davidsummer8631 Its also an outtake on the double disc version, why didn’t they use it instead of Haskells limp version !
This one really gets overshadowed by its predecesser. Need to revisit it.
Musically, Cat Food and Pictures of a City are basically blues tracks. And I love the Devils Triangle, more so than Mars, the only exception being that goofy bass line towards the end.
Masterpiece

If you’re gonna do another King Crimson rewind, can you please do Starless and Bible Black?
There's just something special about Starless and Bible Black, love it.
Cadence and Cascade is the greatest King Crimson song Gordon Haskell ever sang in my opinion
With Peter Giles playing bass on this album, this album is both a sequel to In the Court of The Crimson King and The Cheerful Insanity of Giles Giles and Fripp!
Yes.....and the song is about a threesome 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Brilliant choice! That drummer is a true genius… Oh such an unique band! Creme de la creme in prog rock!!
Need to get some king crimson in the collection
From what I can tell, no sophomore slump. I need to investigate the early Crimson albums. I only own Discipline

In The Wake of Poseidon is Greg Lake's best vocal performance imho.
Great choice Pete! My favorite song from that album is the Devil’s Triangle. ... which reminds me of the informative Monsters Den episodes.
"In the Court" strikes again!
In The Wake Of Poseidon is my favorite song by Greg Lake.
Great record. Darker than the debut except for "Cat Food" of course! I love this album but I gotta be in the mood for it. Especially The Devil's Triangle. Wicked!

Well, we have a spin coming up on that Tuesday night.
@@sotdude7 Nice. I'm a fan of most classic bands, but the solo effords have been unnoticed by me so far.
I honestly don't play this one much, but I need to give it a spin now. It always seemed very similar to ITCOTCK, but definitely has its moments

Its a Good Record, ..very very different from the debut
Cadence and Cascade
Robert fripp and the boys, touring,I know if they are close to ny,you're going
No softies here...
Love In the Wake but In the Court wins this one.
while ItWoP is my least favorite king crimson album, I still find it to be quite good. That’s just how great this band is!
Have this on vinyl since forever. Not as good as the classic debut or the following release, Lizard, but still like it, though always skip The Devil's Triangle
Ur mother's quite insane!!
Cat food
Cat food
Cat food
AGAIN!!
Cat Food. Love this album.
AGAIN! 😉

That would be "Groon"

I never really liked this album, just seemed like an In The Court blooper real with a few odd extras
