Urban Ecology: Can Los Angeles Be Fixed? Ft. Kat Superfisky

- Isn’t Los Angeles an urban wasteland with a dirty and dying river? What is urban ecology? What does an urban ecologist do in Los Angeles?
That’s one way to look at it. LA is full of environmental challenges, but Kat Superfisky, an urban ecologist, sees something else: a diverse landscape full of life that exists alongside our urban infrastructure. In their work with the City of LA, they’re helping bring nature back.
Superfisky moved across the country for one reason: the LA River. Now, they’re part of several boards, founded a nonprofit, and work hand-in-hand with the City of Los Angeles to help build better cities. Urban ecology blends an understanding of social science and urban planning with principles from ecology. When we better understand that our homes, highways, and parks are all still connected to nature (but maybe not in the best way), we can design with intention. Superfisky helps to make sure our built environments provide humans with access to nature, protect us from disasters, and support biodiverse ecosystems. Urban ecology is a unique pathway that offers a blend of nature, urban, and multi-species.
In this episode, you’ll hear Superfisky’s thoughts on the history of Los Angeles from an ecological perspective, see what Urban Ecology looks like in the city, and explore the ongoing work to restore LA environments for people and nonhumans.
Indigenous Land Acknowledgment: The Tataviam referred to the LA River as “Wanüt” or “Orít.” For the Tongva, the river was known as “Paayme Paxaayt,” meaning “west river.” The living descendants of the Indigenous Peoples of LA County continue to express a close relationship with the land through contemporary cultural, spiritual, and medicinal practices, as well as through climate activism. Thanks for this content Isaias ☺
Thanks so much for the support, Pablo! And LA is a magical place with a lot of issues of course, but more solutions that exist now to help improve it to a better city :)
Looks like something that should be on PBS
❤🎉
Awww thank you! That’s the plan 😎
I'm so excited to learn about L.A.'s ecology, thank you Isaias!
Thank you so much and so excited to hear your thoughts
So informative! Really loved this conversation! I have visited LA a few times and been confused by the river being contained in cement. Thank you for teaching so much!
Thank you so much for watching! It’s so important for us to talk about local spaces as they are so sacred!
Phenomenal reporting but woah, that smog in the beginning is crazy 😭 I would love to see an anti-car ecological revolution because it’s heartbreaking what so many highways and so much particle pollution has done to native animal species, obscuring some of the finest landscapes and poisoning some of the most fertile terrain this country has. Wish we left Los Angeles with its native inhabitants because US deranged capitalism has taken so much from us. Peace and love from Bronx, NYC
Thanks so much for watching! And the pollution is bad out here for sure, I heard it was even worse in the 80's and 90's. I remember growing up even in the early 2000's and seeing more smog when on the freeway with my parents as a kid. Los Angeles has some really cool plans with expanding public bus and subway networks in the upcoming years! Reminds me that I should look into doing an episode on urban planning! Yes, the Indigenous communities along the river still exist today demanding for land back and land sovereignty, so it is essential we continue to remind people that the LA river is magical but also has a deep horror story of displacement + violent to construct a concretized area.Thank you again for watching, it means a lot!
Can’t wait !
We can't wait for you to watch!
Look forward to learn as our STEMS is adopter of a creek in urban: Austin.
Thank you so much, we are so excited to hear your thoughts! This video will have closed captioning, we strive all of our videos to have closed captioning for accessibility
Learn plenty!!!
Definitely will use your video lesson into our creek within lenses of STEM Education and Sign Languages.
Thank you both, Kat Superfisky & Isaias Hernandez!
This means so much - thank you so much 🙏🏽♥️
