  • Thanks to one of my viewers, I have a beautiful new studio palette. This very well could be the last major palette I ever set up. Porcelain pallets are heavy and not suitable for travel, but they show washes beautifully in mixing areas and do not stain, unlike plastic and metal palettes. Paired with me Portable Painter travel palette and my larger air tight travel palette, I think I have found my perfect trifecta and I am finally completely satisfied and content with my collection of palettes :)
This palette took about an hour to set up. The wells are large and hold 8-10ml of paint. I recommend using a tube key or flat nosed pliers to get all of the paint out of your tubes.
UPDATE: I do NOT recommend filling these like I did in this video. I now only fill mine half way to allow for diluting pure tube color in the well without moving to the main mixing area.
The full palette of colors can be seen at the end of the video and a full list can be found on my Patreon page for all patrons.
    Allan Davis Art: / allandavisart
If you would like to skip the unboxing, the set up begins at 3:30.
I mixed glycerin into some of my wells for paints that dry harder. For more information on this, please see my video on honey and glycerin: • Adding Honey and Glyce...

I think a tube wringer would be a VERY wise investment. It was painful watching you use that wire cutter. Love the color choices, this is one amazing palette!

I used a tube wringer, for my toothpaste..... and after so-called total usage, i cut open the tube, and there are still lots of un-used toothpaste. It will be so wasteful for the artist colour.......

In Liquid Color It's a good budget hack :) Since it has no lid or flat mixing space, it's not a permanent solution.

Wish I had your squeezed out paint tubes. I cut them open and staple gun them to strips of hardboard as side pallets. Its surprising how much paint empty tubes hold.

Before you open a tube that is pretty much at its end, use a spoon or a glass push all remaining color to the top and fold the tube as you go. You get a bottom part flat as a flounder right to the edges this way and has just a thin film of color in it. The folded part of the tube act as a push bar to squeeze the color out. With this method you get the color on the side, too. It is my favorite method to empty tubes. :)

I use toothpaste tube "keys" to get the most out of my tubes. Like "Isle" below, I cut them open. I don't staple them to hardboard, but am able to "scoop out" a lot of paint from the top. I've included a link to the key I use. There are many types. www.amazon.com/Fangfang-Shape-Squeezer-Toothpaste-Squeezers/dp/B06X92YLX4/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=toothpaste+key&qid=1555262627&s=gateway&sr=8-13

This is a great video to assist in setting up the perfect palette! I started with a similar palette. So many of the palettes have slanted wells that allow dirty pigment to rest against and contaminate my clean pigment. For my favorite DIY palette, I purchased 48 1 " x 1.5" x 3/4" acrylic boxes with lids. I attached them with Velcro to a white corrugated board around a mixing tray (NO, I don't use all 48. They came in packs of 24 and I purchased two packs since I have more than 24.) I used white silicone to provide separate mixing areas on the tray. The mixing tray is also attached to the center of the corrugated board with Velcro to make it easy to remove and clean. I used corrugated board so it would be light. I used my Brother label maker to label the "pans". The Velcro allows me to change the "pans" easily and using corrugated board allows me to change the size, shape, and function of the palette. I've even used the corrugated board as a mixing surface with silicone bead to contain it. The lids allow for easy portability. For those who've commented on ways to remove the paint from the tube, I use a toothpaste "key" and also cut the tube close to the top once I've squeezed all possible paint out. I use a brush to retrieve the remaining paint. Thank you very much for all your help! You always have such great ideas.

Becky, there is a palate you’d like. Robax sloping well palette. It has slanted wells but a lip to keep the paint near the top of the wells, and let the paint run down to bottom of well.

Just got this pallet from my hubby and your video was so helpful! I especially appreciate the update on filling the wells only half full! I know it won't make me a better painter, but it will certainly help me be a better prepared painter and having the extra mixing space is in-cred-I-ble! Another great video. Thanks so much for sharing your pigment info, brands, and reasons for choosing. Seems you can never get too much info on choosing the best pigments. Though I know this video is several years old, I hope you are enjoying it to its fullest!

I recently found 7 inch & 9 inch square white plastic plates at Target. Inexpensive. Perfect for temporary palettes. Not much beading of paints, to my surprise. Also spotted ceramic white plates in housewares, but much more expensive and heavier. Now have three of 7 inch size and will pick up a couple more. Thanks for your videos.

Ah, you finally got one. :)
If I may make a suggestion, I really really recommend you get a tube wringer to squeeze the remaining paint from your tubes. It's quick, easy to use, virtually indestructible, and gets every last drip of paint from tubes. It will prevent you getting bruises from squeezing the tubes yourself. The all metal version is the best, I think. :)

Gosh it has been a while since you set this up! I enjoyed it again and I like that you have changed how you fill only a portion of the wells to allow yourself a little mixing area within the wells! I just purchased a new porcelain palette and I have been watching videos on the subject of filling them! I have done this myself several times over the years but I am open to trying out new options and I have even got a new brand of paint going into the new palette! Lindsay Weirich has been touting M.Graham watercolors and I have purchased some. Now I have an 18 well porcelain palette so I have fewer choices to make! Thank you for sharing your old and new palette filling videos! I am excited to be able to try a new to me paint. I did try a 3 color M. Graham set when I came back to paper painting, but went with Mission Gold. I have since become so enamored with DaVinci watercolors that they have all but taken over my 42 well plastic palette.
Thank you Denise, it is just wonderful how your videos stand up after so much time has passed! Please take care and enjoy your afternoon!

I just watched this video, and it makes me want to get a proper studio palette. Right now I have a 33-well travel palette (Made of plastic, but has very nice wells) and I bought a small portable porcelain palette on a trip, and I use it for mixing, but it is great for mixing colors, even if I have to remember it comes off darker/thicker in my little palette because the wells are more deep than wide. Maybe one day I'll get something like this, because you showed it off beautifully, but I have my own stopgap, so I'm happy.

Thank you for that, that is JUST what I had been looking for, I LOVE the way that watercolor lies flat of porcelain so that you can see the color, I hate it when watercolor beads up. I have added that to my wish list also, I also am looking to try American Journey watercolors, they look like pretty clean watercolors with strong pigment. I currently use Susan Scheewe, Da Vinci, M Graham, Terry Madden. I had bought a set of Van Gogh, but had trouble with most of the colors reconstituting, and had to replace those. I have replicated the same set with a travel palette. I, trying to save up for one of those hand made mop brushes biggest size that can tend to be expensive. Look forward to more videos.

Consider putting the paint color labeling on the top of the lid instead of the porcelain. By using white painters tape you could put a swatch of the paint with names/numbers of the paint on the tape. Hang the lid on a wall behind your painting and you have your colors in front of you while you paint! That's what I plan to do with my new pallet.

My regular palettes have 18 wells and that has been perfect so far. I had a 36 color palette and it was too overwhelming (preselected colors anyway). I really wanted this one because as I acquired more colors and had them on different palettes, commissions especially became difficult when I needed specific colors across three or four palettes. Hopefully this one now has every color I could hope for when creating custom pieces but I still have the smaller ones to fall back on if I desire some simplicity :)

Looking for a pallet but nervous about putting my tube paints into one.
Reason is as a beginner got Arteza “water color paint tubes” put in my pallet but paint quality was so chalky took me a week of putting them under running water, in a big bowl of water and still felt like was removing cement & it hurt my hands!
Now have Paul Rueben’s (24 set 4th generation) & know if keep in tubes will waste way more! Must hold pallet on my lap so ceramic sadly to heavy but can wish 😊!
Just going to do it & see if they turn into cement! Ty!!

Their usual discount price is $59.99 and it is on sale for $39.99 and they have a discount coupon bringing it to $33 with $4.95 shipping for everything in your cart! Not bad shipping for a 5 lb palette and extras!' I also picked up some Aquapasto - ever used it?

Hospitality square, stackable porcelain soy sauce dishes work well for both mixing and holding pigment. Or you can place them around rectangular porcelain dishes

If you use a craft knife, i cut around the top(only 3/4) cut bottom totally off and then slice down center, open and use a pallet knife to get paint out. Be very careful it is sharp but you get most of it.

Jackson's had the old formulation of Sap Green and Undersea Green using Quin Gold. Or at least they had it about a month ago when I stocked up. The Jackson's Brand of Indian Yellow is actually the discontinued pigment PY153 another great warm yellow.

Some other UA-camr has a porcelain palette (too bad I forgot the brand!!) it's a huge circle palette that is broken up like a color wheel! I do remember that it was like $80 tho

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 років тому

I've seen that one too! I like that this one has a bit more freedom with colors but I do like the concept of the color wheel! $80 is pretty steep though for most artists.

At first I thought cutting the strips, labeling etc. wasn't worth the labor, I was wrong. I do stay with one company I like, Sennelier, but the chart booklet that shows the colors, is not the same as cutting these strips and putting like colors side by side. I am trying to reduce my palette colors, and get caught up in what's available....pretty:)...it's their job to sell.....I have ordered the John Pike and am limited (on purpose) to 20 wells. Thanks for the tip!

I have a huge custom pallet and only put small amounts in each well too. I’m surprised to hear you say “controversial colors” it’s your custom palette, you can put whatever you want on it, be it fugitive, mixed, whatever!! Each artist should have their own favorites w/out care about what everyone else may think.

Amazing palette! I could never afford a porcelain version of this, but I did get a plastic one that's been working just fine for my budget. I got the plastic In N Art palette with 51 wells (Not that I have all the wells filled). I love these kinds of palettes and filling videos, it really helped me when I was figuring out how to fill mine. Thanks for sharing the lovely porcelain palette with us! Also, did you ever try the M Graham Cobalt Teal? It's one of my favorite colors in that range, and it hardly granulates.

Beautiful palette! I haven't been able to view your videos for quite some time. I could hear you, but not see the video. Laptop is 10 years old and losing ability to see many things. Figured out today when I clicked on a video and the quality was 360, I could see the video. I put the quality to 760 and could no longer see it. Light bulb moment. I came over to your channel and clicked on this video and it was automatically at 760. Changed to 360 and voila I can see it! A timing wheel runs in the middle of the video, but I can just overlook that.

Today I received this same palette. What did you do with that little bottle, what was that?
I think I also tape the color cards on the lid too ... because how can you see what color on the other side is if you sit in front of it...?
The lid is my reference then.
Why didn’t you put white gouach in it too?
Thanks for your palette tip👍🏼 it wasn’t for sale in The Netherlands, so I had to order it by Jackson art.

Julia Bos it's been a while since I filmed it. Do you have a time stamp for the bottle? It's probably glycerin which i mix into colors that are prone to cracking. I have another video on it :)

Something that has been confusing me about watercolor palettes: how do you keep your pans/wells of colors clean while mixing colors? Because you use a brush to bring a color into the mixing area, and use the brush again to bring in the second color. Do you just rinse off the brush after grabbing each color? Seems very tedious to do that. But that's the only solution I can think of?
I usually see artists not do this. And just quickly grab colors and mix, but their wells always look super messy and you can see colors mixed in. Seems like that totally ruins your colors....

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 років тому

Depends on the color. If I'm going into something light, yes, I rinse. If you're going into something darker or stronger, it's not as important. If you pan gets dirty, you can easily clean it by wiping off the top.

I gave up using tube to squeeze..... always wasting the last remaining (esp artist colour 4-stars that is so expensive).... cutting the tube is tedious.... and then you can never clean it totally.
