During the winter when my limbs would get cold, mostly my feet, I found going outside in the snow bare foot for a few actually helped warm them up. Now I know it wasn’t just psychosomatic.
When I wake up here lately I have doing a min or 2 of grounding, followed by a little calisthenics workout, some Wim Hof breathing and a cold shower. Generally about 3-5 times a week I just turn the cold all the way up and enjoy an incredibly refreshing shower.
It’s interesting how the positive effects actually get more noticeable over time, at least in my case. After just a week of taking a cold shower everyday, you‘ll not only have felt the benefits of that dopamine spike, you also start to feel more energized and resilient overall. Step by step, you learn to cope with stress (mental and physical) in a more comfortable way and overcome psychological barriers. Now, I’m going to start an ice bath routine after having been familiar with cold exposure for a while, as someone who has always happily _avoided_ the cold. If I can do it, you can do it too
I just took my first cold shower for over 10 minutes i feel reborn pretty sure i overdid it for my first time so if youre not a strong person be like everyone else and start with 30 seconds lol im very sleepy right now
@LisaMarieAdams everyone should do what they want so long as they listen to their body and leave when their body needs them to. If the worst this person had happen after 10 minutes was some sleepiness, they can handle 10 minutes and maybe they got more benefit from it than 1-3 minutes. Everyone is different
I may have to get back to cold showers. I’ve been getting too soft after a recent PCS as it was stressful but now it’s time to get back to brass tacks!
Holy shit.. I am fresh out of the shower, I started hot, saw this video, and ended with 2 minutes of cold water for the first time. It was really tough for the first minute but was pretty good on minute 2, got out of the shower and felt so good I straight laughed for 3 minutes straight for no reason 😂 I might actually start doing this every day
me too, i start warm and i reduce the hot water gradually and end with cold water, first on my face then chest, then legs then on my back. Now, I cannot get out the house without this routine.
I don't even wear a sweater in the wintertime in the PNW. I've only been doing cold showers for a week. It's helped regulate my thyroid hormones as well.
I was. 11 years old when my Mom sent me and my lil bro to visit Belize and our dad. We ended up staying for 3 years enduring a lot of asss whooping and beatings from our dad by taking cold showers from ages 11-14! Didn’t know it then but the cold showers are what kept us alive ❤
Just wish the water was colder this time of year, waiting for winter. Doing ice baths for now, a big task to get the ice together. Trying to heal a herniated disc.

Is a herxheimer reaction possible after a cold shower? I became extremely sick after finishing my shower with 5 minutes of cold water. I initially felt great, my neuropathy pain dramatically decreased but within a short amount of time my ears began to ring, I shook internally, muscles locked up, and then anxiety was terrible. What on earth happened?? Was it a herx or is this not good for someone with HPA dysregulation and other health issues?

I’m in a bad period of life, trying to change it, I take really cold showers daily but I don’t really feel good even after doing it for long. When I used to do it before this phase of my life I used to feel amazing. Why is this so
I do feel more energised after taking a cold shower, but I also tend to fall asleep more quickly when reading or watching TV or smth later on. Why is that ?
On a certain level, we have a drug store in our brain, the neurochemicals that show up in the cold: so dopamine, norepinephrine, anandamide, endorphins, and serotonin. If you were to try to cocktail the street drug version of that, right, you're trying to blend like heroin and speed and coke and acid and weed- and point is, you can't do it. It turns out the cold can cocktail all of 'em at once, which is why people will prefer the cold to almost any experience on Earth. It's our favorite experience. It's the most addictive experience on Earth. Why? 'Cause it cocktails five or six of the largest pleasure drugs the cold can produce. We're all capable of so much more than we know. That is a commonality across the board. And one of the big reasons is we're all hardwired for the cold, and the cold is a massive amplification of what's possible for ourselves.
I honestly don't think it increases cortisol. even because it's quite noticeable when the body increases cortisol, stinky sweat, anxiety.. to feel cortisol, just don't eat and take some energy drink. pure cortisol in the blood.
Cold shower in the morning is too much for me, I'm easing into it taking hot-ish shower first then switching to cold. Does this have the same effect?? I need to know 😭
No….. cocaine created a physical and chemical dependency in the body causing symptoms of withdrawal. Cold showers simply create a positive association / feedback loop. Super different experiences for the body.
Is there any evidence providing insights into central dopamine surges (e.g., in rodent models) after cold-water exposure? Peripherally-circulating catecholamines have very different roles (e.g., dopamine and blood pressure control) than their central nervous system counterparts and unfortunately, this limits how these findings from the Smarek paper can be interpreted.
