It will be 25 years this April since my wife and I broke up after a 27 year relationship. I listen to this song and it seems like yesterday. I understand the lyrics all too well.
It may be a sad song about a relationship that isn't working out but it's still incredibly catchy. And I not only luv Phil's singing but Stephen Bishop's tender b/g vocals. as well. Bishop is best known for his hit "It Might Be You" which was the theme from the 80's movie Tootsie.

My best friend of 20 years is flying across the country for an interview, and I know they are going to love her and hire her. We went on a weekend trip and were reminiscing about all the fun we have had (we actually saw Phil Collins together) and I can’t help but think this may be the start of a new season in her life. I want that for her. I know it may be best for her, and so I’m going to get really acquainted with Idaho…What happened at the end of this video will not happen to us, we are sisters forever.

Understood, and I agree, even though I'm no fan of Collins, whose music was ubiquitous at the time (I do like this song, however). Still, might I suggest that the "bittersweet sense of nostalgia" is in part driven by a black-and-white music video that is itself steeped in nostalgia and innocence?
Phil Collins is a genius, in this song he shows it again. The way he overlaps and plays with the tempos in the composition is incredible. The verses repeat but the tempos vary, and yet the song remains beautiful. Masterpiece.

This song is very easy to be overlooked on the great “But Seriously” CD. The line “There was always something more important to do, more important to say”. “But I love you wasn’t one of those things, and now it’s too late”. Reminds me of my late Mom. We had a good relationship but I moved several hours away the last 20 years that she was alive. I tried to call and visit as much as I could, but now feel that I could have said I love you more. She passed away 5 years ago and hearing that line tore me apart. I love you Mom always and forever.

Phil Collins is a genius, in this song he shows it again. The way he overlaps and plays with the tempos in the composition is incredible. The verses repeat but the tempos vary, and yet the song remains beautiful. Masterpiece.

Possibly but if you didn’t do what the music video is showing you then the regret is really huge because the love start like this, when you are a young girl meeting some boy and then a kiss, a flower, walking and sitting in the park, sending each other notes. Studying together.Your parents spying on you, catching every conversation or silly laughing from you while you were speaking by phone 📞 .
And that makes me so sad because happened many years ago ….45-50-35 years ago?, when everything was so beautiful and NORMAL.When boys and girls enjoyed the life together. Is really sad to think about it.

This song is very easy to be overlooked on the great “But Seriously” CD. The line “There was always something more important to do, more important to say”. “But I love you wasn’t one of those things, and now it’s too late”. Reminds me of my late Mom. We had a good relationship but I moved several hours away the last 20 years that she was alive. I tried to call and visit as much as I could, but now feel that I could have said I love you more. She passed away 5 years ago and hearing that line tore me apart. I love you Mom always and forever.

This will forever remind me of my 1st wife who passed away in 2014. I never lived up to the expectations I set for myself as a husband. I tried but not hard enough. I think of our young son who will never know his biological mom the way I did. Do you remember... yes, every time I hear this song😭
Thank God for getting me through grief, saving me from my sins, and blessing me with a 2nd chance at life: another beautiful bride and 2 more wonderful kids.
