  • This lecture explains about the biochemical reactions of Pentose phosphate pathway and the importance of Pentose phosphate pathway in covering sugar molecules to interchangeable types. Pentose phosphate pathway is also known as the hexose monophosphate shunt or phosphogluconate pathway is crucial for recycling NADP WITH NADPH so that different biochemical reactions working with the requirements of NADPH can continue. This process is important to continue many metabolic processes inside the cell.

    Hi, i would like to know how the biosynthesis of l-ascorbic acid is related to ppp( i know there are more possible pathways);
    Im interested in a pathway which consists of D-glucuronate to L-gulonate conversion, than gulonolactone is formed, than ascorbic acid(this pathway i found in basics of biochemistry from p.carlson)(it is a pathway without phosphorylated products)i would like to ask you how it is related to ppp. Thanks

    NADP and hydrogen combine and form NADPH so isn't it anabolic pathway ? Then why sir wrote catabolic pathway on board ?

    Sir ribulose is either converted into its isomer or epimer 5c only one then where did second 5c come from to continue process its mean to combine both to form 10c

      thats because, generated 5 C sugars are converted back to hexose sugars.

    Sir...why 7 molecule of water is required for 6 molecule of glucose-6-phosphate in pentose phosphate pathway??

      @Amit Manna, one water is required by lactonase at second step of oxidative reactions. for oxidation of 6 Glc 6P, u need only 6 water molecules not 7.
