  • Everyone who loves football is aware of Damar Hamlin's collapse on the field during Monday Night Football due to a cardiac arrest. What he's going through sounds somewhat similar to what I went through.
I am a heart attack and TBI (traumatic brain injury) survivor. This is a video done from a survivor's perspective. I talk about what I went through, and what it's like to try to recover from a heart attack and deal with TBI.

I still haven’t seen a 24 year old kid almost die on the football field. It’s disturbing. Thanks for your insight.

I normally listen to your podcasts on Google podcasts rather than through UA-cam, but when I saw this incident take place on MNF I immediately thought about what I knew from your experience. Appreciate you taking time to talk about this.

Jon thanks for the video. My older brother collapsed in my arms and died from a heart attack on July 4th 2020 while helping his wife get him out of the car and into the house after he had surgery. Not a good memory.

Great job of explaining the situation. It does bother me how much attention this player is getting as common that heart attacks are and how many other people have loved ones who had heart attacks that same day and no one cares.

My story is different, but just the same. The injury/condition was tragic and deathly serious, but the emotional toll is (or can be) much worse. Coming to terms with things from a mental and emotional level is seemingly impossibly at times. Emotional care needs to be part of the recovery process, most certainly.

Thank you for sharing. My brother had a cardiac arrest last Wednesday I did CPR. He came out of the coma confused and extremely agitated. We are in the waiting phase and it's extremely difficult.

What a powerful and brave message you offered to so many people. I lost my father to a heart attack when I was six (42.5 years ago) and it stills haunt me to this day. I love your rants on Nebraska football and although I don't agree with every opinion you make about the team, the lesson you conveyed in this video is golden! Thank you for everything and stay strong.

Jon, I had a situation similar to yours, but I was lucky mine was not to the severity level yours was. I found out later that mine also was a "windowmaker". I still go to cardio reahb three times a week for exercise and consider myself one lucky person.

I know I learned valuable information and I’m sure others did too. I’ve been praying for Damar Hamlin and his family, I will add you and every heart attack and TBI survivor in my prayers as well. GBR and get better soon Damar 🙏🏻💯

Jon. Thanks for the video. I am reminded about how similar our stories are, yet how lucky I am. Very briefly here is my story. I too died that day, my day was Aug 27, 2015. I died twice, both times requiring some crash pads and chest slamming. I had 100% blockage of the widow maker. I was lucky, so lucky. I too had heart burn, I thought, turned out to be Angina. I too work in IT, but I went home sick to rest through the heartburn, I thought I was cheating the system and taking a mental health day. - Its hard writing about that day and keeping it brief, the emotion of the day just takes over.
I was lucky because my wife, Laurie, was there for me. I was lucky because I was at the right place at the right time. I was lucky because my crash team had the skill to revive me without destroying my rib cage. I thank my friend and personal savior Jesus Christ. After going home, I laid around watching TV and goofing off, but just could not shake the nagging heartburn, felt like I needed to burp, but could not get rid of the sensation no matter what I tried.
My wife got home from her shift at about 3:30. I told her about my mental health day and she chided me jokingly. I was only half joking, because the nagging heartburn got worse quickly, it was the Angina and the plaque in my artery getting more and more lodged. By 4:00 I found myself hunched over the toilet trying to induce vomiting to release the pressure. By 4:15 I was crawling down the hallway crying for help. By 4:30 I was in the hospital ER, where I finally flatlined. They got me back and then I crashed again. Each time required several zaps and a guy pounding on my chest, skillfully, my wife tells me.
I was lucky because my friend Jesus was with me throughout the day and got me to the place where I could receive the best of care in the best of places at the right time. My EF was back to normal the first time they checked it a couple days later. I did still have the agony of the hospital stay but for only 4 days. If I would have stayed at work that day, my story would have been much different. Praise the Lord!
I have the guilt, the PTSD, the whole range of emotions. My family bore the whole brunt of my trauma that day and I cant take that away. But I dont have the physical limitations that you have now. I was only out for a minute or two each time. I changed my diet and exercise, did some Cardiac Rehab. I got acquainted with some friendly pills. I turned a corner and never looked back. One more quick note. My brother had the exact same thing happen to him in 2020, but thanks to the inconveniences of Covid (long story) and the inexperience of his crash team, he had a rougher recovery and does not have his EF back to normal. I got to live through the experience again with him.

Thank you for sharing John, I watch your channel often, GBR!
I was curious about something and if you don't want to reply either way I totally understand it, but I was curious if you had any sort of near death experience when you had your experience? Glad you are okay now and praying for Damar.

People typically ask, "Did you see a light" so the NDE experience is usually associated with seeing something. I saw nothing.
However.... people don't ever ask, "How did it feel?" because if they did, I'd tell them it was incredibly peaceful. Like a million times more peaceful than anything I've experienced in life.

Here I am going down the internet rabbit hole, my mother had cardiac arrest last Sunday night January 8th. I found her in the kitchen and by some miracle my older brother was staying the night (he has completed all the CPR courses). We were both working on her, but she remained pulseless for 10-15 minutes until the 2nd shock corrected the heart rhythm when the paramedics arrived. She was awake in the emergency when we arrived but keeps repeating the same questions. She got a double stent in the major artery (LAD) as their was 95% blockage and is going into pacemaker and defibrillator surgery tomorrow. The worst fear I hold is brain damage and memory loss although the CT scan was positive and showed no damage. I just wanted to vent a little bit, but your story has brought lots of hope to my moms situation although those moments between finding her and her being revived felt like a life time. She was moved into icu within 4 hours and out within 40 hours I am praying the doctors aren’t rushing the recovery. If anyone is reading this and knows someone with SCA and is alright replying I would like to hear others stories. Please don’t take life for granted, it really is to short and you realize when it’s basically to late.

There are a lot of Heart Attack support groups on Facebook. There are a lot of stories, and people to help.
Search for "Heart Attack And Stents" for example. Another is "Heart Results" - which is pretty well run and heavily focused on diet.
But there is help available from other survivors.
I hope your mother recovers well. Take care of yourself.
