SO surprised Steve didn't just replace that master. One thing I love about this channel is he never cuts corners on repairs just to save money. He always does it the right way using high quality parts. I have a feeling he was just impatient with this repair and didn't want to wait for parts.
If I ordered a master and waited for that I would then have to find the next thing wrong and wait for that. I’d rather know now the condition of everything
The 280 Z is coming along very well, glad you managed to save the master cylinder. If all else fails use the persuader ( a hammer for those not familiar with that term). Maybe you could put your UA-cam logo on the car, it would be a good advert for the channel? Thanks Steve for sharing. 👍👍
Boy does that bring back some memories. I bought a brand new 1978 280Z and loved that thing. But then Datsun came out with the 1979 280ZX, and I just had to have it. So I traded in an almost new 280Z for a 280ZX. The ZX was a luxury car compared to the Z. It rode so much smoother, but still had the power of the Z. I drove the ZX until 2003 when I drove it into the barn and forgot about it for the next 15 years until I gave it away to charity. I kind of wish I had kept it now. It would have been an easy restoration.
thanks Steve. your techniques will be very useful since I am about to go through the same thing on a '67 MGB. I plan to change the seals if I can get the piston out of the master cyl. Some very useful comments as well. John in Manitoba.
I know that I would 100% do it exactly the way you did, but I still cringe when I see the rusty parts go back on! Love this build! Can't wait to see it on the track!
The new parts are usually junk compared to the originals anymore. Also if it doesn’t effect the operation why waste the time and money. I’ll save that kit for a Z that needs it.
Agree, I smile when UA-camrs spend a fortune to replace old brake hardware etc that just needs cleaning and correct lubrication. People forget that most of the old hardware was over engineered purely because that way you could use it across models and reduce stock. Early 60s and 70s European cars come to mind for that.
From what you started with this 280Z is almost ready to rally. The metal work turned out fantastic and the addition of frame support and jacking point is a great idea. I have seen so many crushed Z frames perfect cure and it increases the ridgity of the Z . Hope to see more videos on the Z Rally Car.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Driving around the block is one thing with a high potential of no brakes but racing with something like that is more of a death wish.
Love that thing,so good, will be huge fun at rallycross, very jealous. Quick question? What brand are your ratchet spanners please,,couldn’t recognise the brand in the video, cheers much
Hi Steve . Well one thinge for sure it isn't going to break the bank ! I guess the metalwork is the biggest cost ? So do you do this in house or take it to a bodyshop ? And goodness ! doesn't it look better without the bumpers ! Thank Steve
Typical Z car bodge,, fit a alternate carb and intake.I have owned both 240 and 260Zs and only one had the original carbs. That car was about 6 years old.And had both front doors cracked. Every other were tradeins and rusty heaps,, they were Zs!! I do have a set of factory carbs. Complete with filter.

@@ThisWeekWithCars Ahh, that makes a lot of sense, actually...
Haha, what I like about him is the total calm, never a hint of impatience. This is how I want to go about working with cars from now :)

datsun 240Z also known as the pound and a half. 24oz.
Very rare to see cost free repairs. Nice work, and car.

@@ThisWeekWithCars Totally agree!

I'd be very dubious about the state of the seals in that master cylinder; I'm not sure i'd want to go racing without replacing them.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Love that body style.
Love the 280! Definitely want to see more videos on it. 😀
Such a good looking car. Great job saving that master cylinder too
There was an explosion in the Nissan factory-It was raining Datsun cogs!!!😅
Would've thought the stripped down master cylinder a good candidate for the ultrasonic tank.
Possibly but I didn’t want to wait that long.
Very cool car. I'd love to take it apart and do a light restoration on it. They're small, simple, and classic.
at first i thought you installed the shoes wrong until i stood on my head
I tried standing on my head but I couldn't bend my legs enough .😀

Did it all here.
Great stuff thanks
Those aluminum drums have a problem with warping.
A cool car it is
Great video
Ratcheting open end wrenches?! What manner of sorcery is this? 😮
Sometimes you can Boil them to free them up
You could manoeuvre an aircraft carrier with that front bumper.
Sorry, you put the shoes on backwards. The one with less material goes on the front from what I remember.
i saw that also
U have the brakeshoes on back the front
Shouldn’t the long shoe go in the rear?
They are all the same length on these shoes.
that master cylinder will give you problems in the future. if u can find a replacement. better go get it.
Y dose that 280 look like a 260 in Aus tralia

repeats this has been on before get it every day ?????????????
Drill a small hole in the end of the cylinder, drive the piston out with a drift, put a screw in the hole to seal it when you're done...
1st.
I thought the 1976 was a 260Z
In America in 1974 only
Yes your right I couldnt remember a friend of mine had a 260. I had a 240 I think it was a 1970, a1978 280Z and I had a 1982 Turbo Z@@ThisWeekWithCars
Sorry, but there is no “o” in DATSUN. Same as it is not NEESARN. Not JAGWAAR either.Apart from that, I quite enjoy your postings.
