Living in MO (aka clay soil insanity), I always find it crazy when Laura "digs" with her hands or even the auger. When I dig a hole, the entire thing comes out in one clump and you have to beat it apart to get the dirt to fill back in around the plant roots. The plus... we don't really need irrigation for a good portion of the growing season. Happy gardening y'all with all our various pros and cons!
I feel the same way here in Ohio. I try to amend with gypsum, but there's no solution for all of the rocks that we have. But as you mentioned, there's an upside to the clay soil - it's great for ponds!
Same here in KY. Hoping that using Laura's technique of amending every year going forward will finally help. When the clumps dry, they turn basically to cement. Ugh.

Past few years I never really put much thought into their care, I didn't count on them coming back each year. We often planted other things over them then had to move/ remove things. Hi! I'm so excited about planting some bulbs!! I am moving from an apt (balcony planting) San Diego up to a home in Northern California, (so I can play in the yard!) back to my hometown, where it's hot and dry....but colder in winter. I have a blank slate of a weeded yard...with basically no watering system and no grass. So I have a lot to work on and then I will have a beautiful space to share with my friends and family! Thank you so much Laura for all of your information and inspiration ❤ 💕
I wish I had this video a couple of months ago I got too excited and planted 50 coladiums and 8 elephant ears and I only got 2 caladiums come up. I just planted too early. I will definitely try again next year with this reference. Thank you for all your inspiration.
We were gifted some gorgeous yellow callas this year, and after enjoying them in the house, I found some deep blue pots to put them in for outside. I separated the rhizome into 2 or 3 plants...hopefully they'll continue to produce.
Good morning everyone from here in Ohio. Thank you Laura for making this video I learned a lot about my bulbs that I didn’t know before I’ve been watching the channel for five years now I believe and it never gets old!!! Oh my gosh so helpful. I had just about given up as a beginner gardener. All the bulbs I planted in Feb are gone. Nothing came up. This has re inspired me. I love dahlias. Helps when you explain parts of the bulb and plants. I still don’t know what a rhizome looks like.
Yes your demo's are great I'm visual learner & you do it so well pat yourself on the back for those demos cause If was close enuf I would but Michigan is pretty far have great day all ya all 👍🌿😀
Your videos always make me want to plant ALL the flowers. I love this video because I always feel like if I don’t plant bulbs in the fall I’ve missed my opportunity.
Thank you for showing how to plant them! I’ve ordered bare roots plants in the past and have been surprised at how hard it is to tell which side is up, LOL!!
I live in Indiana (zone 6a) and successively planted 5 gladiolus in a small bed last year. They are not even close to being hardy here, so I usually just let them rot over the winter and replant the next year since they are pretty cheap to buy. Well, to my surprise I noticed in March that I have a stand of around 20 glads coming up. I’ll have glads coming out of my ears in about a month! 🤣
@@Edu_Kate We do! But I absolutely hate winter. I hate the cold and the snow (I know, I’m crazy). December through February is plenty long for me. About ten years ago, I went on vacation in Northern Minnesota over the Fourth of July and was shocked at how HOT it was! The forests and landscapes were gorgeous. I could have done without the mosquitos the size of helicopters though 🤣. You have to take the good with the bad and the giant mosquitos were still worth it. Had a great time up there. I watched some videos from Flower Hill Farm and so far, so good.
There are so many plants at end of season I would just rip out and throw away. Now I am saving corms and tubers and wintering over plants inside. You have saved me money! Thanks Laura.

I planted a couple of Calla Lily’s last year from plants and I didn’t know they were bulbs. This year, even after our -20 winter nights and snow, they all grew back and even multiplied throughout the flower bed. They are so pretty with their leafs and flowers!
Just want to thank you guys for making my days brighter and happier! I so enjoy watching you! Last year I had my yard xeriscaped and started watching your videos after that happened, so today I went out and found the most lovely urns, which are lightweight (as I am older), and planted them with some lollipop shaped miniature roses with some trailing vines at soil level. They look so gorgeous and I never would have done that without your inspiration! Also I always look for Proven Winners now when I shop! All because of your sweet help and cheerful attitude! Thank you!!
Now I can lighten up with measuring cups/spoon when adding compost and fertilizer. I also learned the anatomy of bulbs. Appreciate you taking the time to share ideas and details on how to do them.💫
I learned a great tip about cut gladiolus flowers... after they are cut, they no longer have the energy of the mother plant to push the upper flowers open. So if you peel off the lower green sheath, underneath each flower bud, they will open all the way up to the top. I hope this makes sense!!!
Thanks so much for the excellent information. I am a beginner bulb growing home gardener. I will use the info. next year when I start my bulb beds in the yard. We moved in last Summer so it is on my punch list to landscape the existing desert yard here at the house. Many on my street have very minimal landscaping and lots of gravel since we have expensive water (and limitations may come due to probable drought).
I planted dahlias for the first time this year, wish this video was out before I did. Had not idea about the “parts”, and plunked them all down in an upright position. Hope something grows for me 😕. Thank you for this video, I have now learned how to plant bulbs. 🙂
The way you talk about your partnerships aren't annoying ..THANK YOU! They are relevant and interesting. Plus since you talk about them and get behind them, makes me automatically trust them. I will check them out after this video :)
Videos like these are so helpful - thank you! I was hoping you would include irises, though. They are blooming right now and I so want some in my garden too.
Good suggestion! Maybe she'll include them in a future video. In case you happen to get your hands on iris bulbs before she creates that video, just wanted to note that this one had such a variety of bulb types that you can probably still use it as a reference. One note is that there are a few different types of irises. Some have teardrop-shaped bulbs that look similar to the gladiolus in this video and are planted the same way (point up, a few inches deep). Others have rhizomes that look similar to the cannas in this video and planted the same way (long, wide rhizomes are planted horizontally, fairly shallow, with the growing tips pointing up). Sometimes, you might also find a garden center selling them as potted plants, in which case, you treat them like most other potted plants and transplant to the same soil depth. I've had a couple irises die on me over the years, but the vast majority of the types I've tried have been REALLY forgiving and multiplied each year, so if you find some bulbs/plants you like the look of, I'd say give them a shot!
Because iris are spring blooming rhizomes you would need to plant them in late summer /early fall depending on your zone. They need time to get established before the first frost. You can be looking for them in garden centers later in the season.
Laura thank you so very much for your informative videos! I learn so much and get so much inspiration from you! I never knew much about fertilizing the plant, how to take care of my landscaping and I am so very glad that I found your channel God bless you ❤️ You also have a beautiful family and such a sweet cat. You exude a calm and peaceful demeanour. You can tell you have a very lovely temperament because the cats are always around you.
Thank you so much to do the visual planting. I have everything planted that you listed but my dahlia did not come up and now I know why I planted them wrong, I put them up & down instead of laying on their side, I read the package over and over but could not understand quite what they were saying, I finally looked in the pot and they were all rotten poor things never had a chance. I learned so much from this video . I will definitely purchase some more bulbs and give it another try, thank you!!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have never grown Gladiolus before. It was one of my Grandma's Favorites and she planted them every year. I may have to see if I can find room to try them.

So helpful! Love this video. Thank you so much for explaining the structure of each one and how to plant them. And thank you to the camera man for zooming in on the bulbs as you describe its parts. You have no idea how helpful it is to really see what you're talking about without having to try and strain my eyes
My dahlia order came yesterday. I thought I was pushing it by ordering a dozen LOL Your videos make me want to do more, more, more. I love seeing your house & gardens develop. I always slow it down for the drone shots, trying to figure out where what was going on. If someone gets adventurous one day, it would be cool to see comparisons over the years.
Ah Laura, you have gifted me with the need to add pots to my garden. 😂 I'm buying pots to avoid the excessive weeds in my back yard, and doggie stuff. My yard is covered in Bermuda grass and other weeds, thanks to over a decade of neglect from previous owners. I've added trees in the last few years, but wanted to start a garden. Then I added a raised bed, a half wine barrel, and two new terra-cotta pots. Thank you
I’ve always been intimidated with planting bulbs and always stuck to buying plants from nurseries. After seeing your success with dahlias in your cut flower garden, I decided to try planting dahlia tubers this year. The dahlias are growing beautifully so far ♥️. Thanks for a really informative video. I’m also a visual learner, so seeing you describe and point out all the particulars about the bulbs and then watching you plant them makes the whole process less intimidating. I’m going to try calla lilies next.
I am loving your videos. Everytime I watch one of your videos I learn something new. I also love you are a visual learner too you have such a great way of explaining what you do. 💐
Thanks for showing how to plant the flower corms. I wondered if I had done it correctly and I’m happy to say that I did! Can’t wait to see see the flowers!
New to gardening and watching your videos daily. I'm obsessed!! Never planted a bulb. So when and how do I remove them in fall? How do I store them? If I pop these in my garden, how close can I place them to my perennials? So much to learn!! I'm zone 5b.
PLEASE can you talk about which varieties can be grown in pots? It is all I can do for now until I have a garden. ❤️ You inspired me to plant flowers and herbs and it is such a joy! Thank you!
I'm trying dahlias (3 clumps) for the second time - my first time, about 3 or 4 years ago, was a complete failure! This time I've tried the pre-sprouting method - placed them in a containers, half cover with soil and let sit about 3 weeks; two are sending up lovely leaves that's about 4-5" long; the 3rd is lagging behind but I'm hopeful it'll soon wake up. I bring them outside for a few hours on days the temperature climbs but they've spent the nights on the floor of the shed. Today I had to rush outside to bring them in because to my horror and disbelief there was wet snow coming down! I don't think they will be ready to go in the ground for another couple of week but I'm looking forward to the day I can dig a hole and get my three little clumps planted.
Great video! I learn by watching as well, so it was extremely helpful for you to explain each type and actually show the planting process. I also appreciate your “Garden Manicure”! We can all relate to the chipped polish - thank you for keeping it real!
Really enjoyed this video of several bulb basics. So much information for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. I like how you add in design principals as well. Thanks so much!
My first attempt growing elephant ears from bulb (corm?) was a fail. ☹️ I babied that pot, had it sitting over the furnace grate to keep it warm (not hot), watered it, had a grow light on it and nothing. I bought some 'Coffee Cups' already growing and upsized the pot (I heard the plant grows in relation to the size pot it's in or landscape. Then, I will bring it indoors to keep as an indoor plant over winter. I just love how the leaves collect rainwater and spill out when full.
Just thought of this after watching your previous video on renaming your garden areas. I think the “Giving Garden” is an excellent name because of all the “Joy it is Giving you”. Giving you and your family and others flowers, fruits and vegetables. Great answer to any snarky inquests. Grow on!💐

Hello, everybody 👋 Happy Friday! Hope your weekends are full of gardening! 🌱
Thanks for the introduction to Cleopatra cannas!! We have yellow cannas and red ones but now we can add the Cleopatras to tie them together!!
Floret Flowers has a new mini book out for download on her favorite varieties of Iris. Perhaps look at her channel.
Love my dahlias that I have in pots and learned so much getting them fuller and more flowers, thank you.
The dahlia tubers always remind me of ginseng roots.
Timely and excellent video to start planting my first ever bulbs. Thanks, lovely Laura.
I'm so glad I stumbled onto your UA-cam channel months ago has really been helpful answering questions that I might have and such an inspiration with your beautiful gardens I live in an area with a very small yard and hopefully I can send you a couple of pictures of what I just plinanted I moved here in Central Indiana in September and I've had a clean slate
Thank you Laura for all you teach us ! You have a way about you which makes everything you do doable for anyone to learn from!! Hope that makes sense!! You and your family are my daily fix ! I simply look forward to watching you all!! 🌼🌷🌸😀
Good morning 🌄 🌻💐🤩🌻🌻☕
A rainy, cool, and windy couple of days here in SE Wisconsin. Getting a break for morning banana and instruction with Laura for when the sun returns! 🎶 Tell Laura we love her!🎶
Zone 5a SE WI all my annuals are in my garage and my peonies are trying hard to sustain themselves in this wicked wind. Typical Memorial Day weather in W!😢
Loving the new structure where u jump from talking to visualising especially with the dahlias and more especially given I planted all mine the wrong way round last year hence there is nothing this year. I thought those nibs/nobs were growing roots. Well u learn something new every day! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Laura, your Family is always in my Prayers.. love you guys. there is a Rose I found that you would LOVE !! its called a "Polka", and its so amazing, your fav color,,, and it looks just like the pic,, :)
Such an inspiration to make beautiful landscapes. Laura’s my favorite gardener.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have never grown Gladiolus before. It was one of my Grandma's Favorites and she planted them every year. I may have to see if I can find room to try them.
Laura you are such a great teacher to all of us! This is my first year growing Dahlias and glads and now I NEED every lily you mentioned 🤣🤣🤣 you are such a blessing to my gardening heart but terrible for my wallet 🤣🤣🤣 no worries it’s all for a good cause! 💗 What’s the saying “do what makes you happy!” Thank you always for the beautiful videos guys!
So helpful! Love this video. Thank you so much for explaining the structure of each one and how to plant them. And thank you to the camera man for zooming in on the bulbs as you describe its parts. You have no idea how helpful it is to really see what you're talking about without having to try and strain my eyes
Thank you for the tell/show. It helps very much 🙂
I took a chance and bought a dalia tuber from Lidl - my first time ever planting bulbs or tubes and it’s growing beautifully already!!!
Thanks a lot. So much to learn. Bulbs were so intimidating but now I will attempt to plant them. Thanks again.
Thank you
Russell rules! Cute kitty.
So informative. Thank your.
Thank you Laura. Great video. I am a visual learner as well so I love how you explain. You encourage me to try new things and be a better gardener.
The ultimate video...Laura sharing her vast knowledge with us and Russel making his appearance! Gotta get me some of those "bad bananas"!
Good Morning everyone! Hope everyone is having a lovely day in your gardens!!
I’ve had a small variety purple calla lilly in the same pot for over ten years! They are amazingly easy to grow and keep.👍🏻
Do you leave your pot all winter or do you have to move it somewhere?
@@karenwidaman9860 ....i leave it in the pot...but I’m in CA where weather is always mild.
Very good info Laura! Thank you!! I'm a visual learner myself and found this so helpful!!
New to gardening and watching your videos daily. I'm obsessed!! Never planted a bulb. So when and how do I remove them in fall? How do I store them? If I pop these in my garden, how close can I place them to my perennials? So much to learn!! I'm zone 5b.
So happy for this!! I bought some bulbs at Costco in March and I just realized I have no idea what to do! 😆
I'm lucky to have all these in my garden and they are all beautiful!
Really enjoyed this video of several bulb basics. So much information for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. I like how you add in design principals as well. Thanks so much!
I love these! I grow cannas, caladiums and elephant ears in pots every year and underplant with lemon coral sedum-gorgeous!!!!
Grow on!💐
Russell sure has amped up his camera presence. I thought it was just when you were pregnant with Samantha but now he is just everywhere!
There's no way I would be able to get anything done with Russell Around! lol He's such a sweet cat. I would want to love on him all day!
Me too!!
Good morning! Have a lovely, productive (or relaxing), plant and flower filled Memorial Weekend everyone!!! 💗💗💗
Love this type of video. Haven’t grown these before. Feel like I can do it this year. Fully inspired to tackle these bulbs. Excited!
This is so great. Thank you for this. I learn so much from you and your projects.
