A SEAFOOD LOVERS DREAM - JAFFNA Kool, TAMIL Prawn Curry, Crabs, And More!!!

- Started off today in the vegetable markets in Jaffna. We picked the busiest day of the week as well, as we went on a friday. It was packed, crazy, and loud but such a fun experience. Mr. Tilak and his chef took me around as we bought produce for the day and explained the history of the market.
After that, we went for some seafood to get for the nights massive feast. Even though the markets were not near as busy as usually, it was still really great to be able to get so much seafood for cheap.
After that, Chaminda and I went to go grab some food at Malayian cafe. Little did we know, we were about to be served a feast! With amazing vadai, dosai, and that delicious Chai tea I really felt like I had a feast before my feast.
After that we headed to meet up again with Mr. Tilak as we got on his boat to take us to the island for the seafood feast. I got to watch the preparation for the Khool as it was being made and wow. What an absolutely fantastic dish. Had to be one of my favorites from Jaffna! And we are not even done, as about 8 other dishes were prepared for us to enjoy on the beach. A truly spectacular day.

My grandma is srilankan and is from Jaffna, when I was a kid she use to tell me the food she use to eat back at Jaffna.. I'm 30 years old and I think I'm missing a lot and need to visit Sri Lanka just to try the food and experience the beautiful country! I hope this pendemic ends soon and I get to travel

@@Macoi24 kool, pittu, string hoppers and hoppers are the jaffna foods.. Idli , dosa, vada, poholi , mothagam are indian foods.. I think there have indian chef or they must be the refugee(who went to India from Srilanka as refugee) who back to Srilanka from India..
Max& Tomas that green Palm leaf bowl is what, I'm told, that Jaffna villagers, farmers etc also use for drinking 1) the Jaffna's Kungee aka the famous Congee now(the original ancient tamil Rice boil over breakft porridge- soup, Kungee, copycated to international fame by Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines to especially big in Chinese Restaurants now) or 2) the villagers use the same leaf bowl to drink the coconut & palm toddy-wine, that max is drinking in glass with the meal.
Mmm, Wonder the Jaffna's popular cocon/palm Toddys will go well with the Thanksgiving Turkey dinner, or perhaps well with Trump's KFC & Burder dinners 😁
@@unitygang2968 plz check ur info, as i know all dosa, idli, vadai, sambar, rasm etc all's been traditional Jaffna foods as much as Tamilnadu for over 100+ yrs, as long as Hindu temples in existence in SL.

Great video Max, first time seeing a great presentation of our food and culture by a westerner. The food, both the vegetarian food at the restaurant and the seafood looks very authentic and of high quality. I can't believe that the way you ate is more realistic and natural than how we natives eat. It seems you really enjoyed the food. I am originally from the other side of the Island, the Tamil Nadu state of India, now living in Houston, Texas. Based on your accent, you seem a Texan too.

Had a similar experience with the tea in Kenya. I was dying to find out what kind of tea it was. Turned out it was just an ordinary Earl Gray. It is the fresh milk that makes the difference lol
In general, being used to food from the supermarket, it is the freshness of everything that tastes so good in countries like this. Jaffna is on top of my wish-list.

After seeing you eating thosai and idly with coconut sambal and looks so delicious, I must try this combination (eating with coconur sambal). I have always eat with curries instead, and thought that this combination is more delicious. The seafood feast looks so yummy! 👍👍👍
Yeah, so we asked for it by request. This coconut chili sambal is nice too. You see it in some places and some other places will do a mint style chutney.
