    When I see something I want I make a calendar entry for a week or month away to consider the purchase. If I still want it, I get it. Usually I really don't care about owning it after all.

      Wow, that's nice to hear. I hope a lot of people can see this comment and they'll be inspired to do the exact same thing as you did. By not rushing things out, everything is possible. Just like what you've done - by taking things slow, you can save yourself from financial burden.

    Do I need this? Do I love this? Do I use this? Those are the mantras I use. These principles and minimalism have made my life so much more peaceful! My clothes fit into my closet with room. My dishes fit nicely into my cabinets. One dish washer load washes the dishes for my family of six!

      For a long time, every time I brought something into my house I took a box out for donation. It l made a huge difference and got me started on minimalism.

    When I'm considering buying something, I ask myself "where will this live?" If I don't have a specific place or room for it, I reconsider. Now if it's something I feel I really want, I ask myself "what can I let go to have this particular item?" These two questions have helped me in the past year or so (still kind of new on this journey).

    I’m so proud of how I’m coming home with no bags!!! I stop, think, be honest with myself and I just walk on. I shop but really don’t mind not buying…. I imagine my neat uncluttered house and just smile ☺️☺️☺️☺️

    'Doubt Means No'
    I came up with this motto many years ago and it's a game changer. If I hesitate or start coming up with reasons to why I "need" to buy something, 99% of the time I don't and just reminding myself of that phrase works like a charm and I walk away feeling empowered.

    Objects are not people......hearing this has helped me so much over the past few days. I’m working on a major purge of stuff I don’t use and haven’t used for years. I’m finally able to let go of stuff I’ve held onto because of the memory of the person who gave it to me. It’s quite freeing.

    This reminded me of a poster I saw once long ago. The photo was of a tumultuous shoreline, with water crashing furiously over huge jagged rocks. One of these rocks had an open space through which water was rushing, from the relative calm on the other side. The caption said, "The only way around is through." This has stuck with me all these years, and it strikes me today that it is helpful also for decluttering: the only way around is through. Thanks!

    One of my recent mottos that has been helping me find a more sustainable way to my version of minimalism: Can I fix this?
    I take that even further by really taking the time to learn how to properly care for the items I have, like leather conditioning my jacket and bag, and sharpening my scissors and pocket knife.

    • @site_is_down
      @site_is_down 2 роки тому +1

      No matter how small the thing may seem, it's the effect that counts. As easy as you are doing the leather conditioning, you can save at least a penny, which can be a big bucks combined in a year.

    For me when I’m shopping and looking at things and questioning if I should buy it. I try to take a moment and think, where would I put this? If I don’t have a spot, I don’t buy it. I want items I cherish not ones that are just there. For clothes I think, I’m just going to have to store this when it’s off season. That also helps me with the decision. I can differentiate better if I still want it or not.

    I really wish I could buy new but old-fashioned appliances that don't come with "smart" technology, including, but not limited to: refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, and cars. For the love of God, my parents had the same refrigerator for over 40 years, the same telephone over 50 years. If/when the washer was acting up, my dad could just flip it over and change the agitator belt. Same principal with cars. And my parents managed to operate quite nicely without "cell" phones, which are aptly named, if you think of a "cell" as a jail. The technology isn't "smart," nor are we for using it.

    I had a garage sale. Just about everything sold for one dollar. One dollar. To the sad soul who bought so much stuff for one dollar. That aside, something I spent $40 on went away for a dollar. It was a powerful lesson. I don't buy stuff in the moment to have, to let it go for one dollar. Look around your house. Do you really need or use that? Likely not.
