    3:50 The Battletech kickstarter was for the mercenary forces, which are a huge part of the game's history and the boxes were cheap. It would be roughly equivelent to GW releasing a boxed set of the entierity of both sides of the Battle of the Farm in modern plastic at truescale for under a ton. It's been a huge boost for a game that, like 40K, is still firmly mired in the 1980s in system terms.

    Total sales include sales to people that just hobby but don't play. You don't see it being played, it still sells.

    I started painting minis about 6 years ago and started with the Nolzur’s line, and those are fantastic for entry to the hobby: they’re pre-assembled and primed, so you can crack open a blister pack and start painting. After painting 10-15, I moved onto GW plastic and haven’t touched Nolzur’s since. As for local metas, it’s the same for me: multiple shops have a loaner set of Shatterpoint for players to try out, but I’ve never seen it touched. There’s also guy who tries to run MCP tournaments (and did host one last summer), but whenever I check out the local MCP discord channels, he’s in there talking to himself.

    Andy, I recently jumped back into Battletech after 32 years away. The game is good, though likely too crunchy in the minutiae (which is why most people control inly 1-4 mechs). So I am aiming to play the smoother Alpha Strike ruleset that works well for skirmish (4-12 models) or even mass battles of 20-30 models.
    Also, we have different tastes regarding the size of models. I prefer miniatures to mini. Shatterpoint is fine, but those large models are not a draw. Give me the true 25mm of MEsbg, or even Epic 30k’s 8mm.

    play battletech, more so the Alpha Strike variant, that is a simpler game, without the hexs, and more tradicional wargaming rules. AS is played with more mech, and can easily be played with tanks and vtols, using normal terrain and true line of sight

      @leonardogoncalves5372 Місяць тому +1

      @@an0nycat more reason to play alpha strike then. Its a nice and easy game and you can put 10/12 mech per side and have a epic game in 2h, or 3/4 per side and have a 1h game

    DnD has (at least in my circles) been gaining (or resurging) in popularity. Mostly grown adult Nerds finding a group to hang out with lol. Love it!

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  Місяць тому +2

      Oh no, for sure, DnD being a big seller makes a lot fo sense due to the whole... critical role channel thingy. But the minis surprise me!

    • @slackeratlarge575
      @slackeratlarge575 Місяць тому +2

      The minis are often prebuilt and pre primed. 0 barriers to entry

    • @majortom7186
      @majortom7186 Місяць тому +1

      @@slackeratlarge575 there are quite a lot of pre-paints in the range too, and most are at least as good as a fairly average painter can achieve with contrast alone. It doesn't hurt that D&D alone has an audiance several orders of magnitude larger than the tabletop wargaming hobby as a whole. One of the frustrations we've heard from everyone from TST to Hasbro is that you can only really monitorise a tiny fraction of the D&D community (GMs). That problem goes across all of roleplaying. WFRP had (probably still has, 4th edition is fantastic) a much bigger player base than WFB & 40K put together, but generated much less revenue for GW as the cost of entry and continuation was tiny in comparison to the tabletop games.

    Speaking of sales, when do we have to start worrying about GW doing a Kill Team 3.0 and all of our current rules become obsolete?

    • @GlassHalfDead
      @GlassHalfDead  Місяць тому +2

      The current guess is we'll get the next edition in September. And we have no idea what it will do to the game or our current teams. We can only speculate using how they've treated other games

    I really want to like Shatterpoint, but I just don't. I got the core set with the one mission, bought the second mission too, but I've found the game to be so boring. Each of the characters abilities are variations on the same theme of moving the character, moving another character, or giving a debuff. It's so dull. I was expecting Star Wars Crisis Protocol where everyone is unique and feel powerful and Shatterpoint really does feel like tug-o-war with things just going nowhere.
    This is the year for me to get into at least a few new skirmish games, but GW skirmish games seem a little volatile right now to invest in when I have nothing.

      I feel the same way, the game just doesn't appeal to me, but the models are gorgeous. I think I'm going to buy a few packs of interest just for painting.

    For AoS, there wasn’t much churn in the system last year. People had their armies, and played those armies. So, not much meta chasing from what I observed. One of the problems, sales wise, for a stable meta. That said, didn’t you analysis of tournament participation suggest that there was declining interest in AoS?

      Haha, I don't think anyone expected it to be up there. In the same way I didnt'e expect Infinity or Deadzone to be there. The top sellers are a specific sort that all have huge recognised IP backing. If it weren't for the Star Wars and Marvel IP, I don't think AMG would be there. That's how the market is. Makes Battletech stand out all the more!

      Top selling in a quarter doesnt really tell that much. You would need to look at the data for year or two at the sametime to see the actual. I would assume the list would be GW games, after it are everyone else.
