Thanks! It is definitely not very loud. I think the OEM front pipe keeps sound down, whenever I had a high flow front pipe on my old cars, the exhaust was much louder.
@@Subbanfan11 It would definitely be louder, especially if a cat'less header. From my experience though, the front pipe does a lot of the sound dampening on these engines.
Great example of an "OEM+" style of exhaust. Not for the attention-seekers out there, but just different enough from stock to be distinctive, especially at low RPMs and when heard from outside. This is the old man in me talking I guess, but if I had a GR86 and I really wanted to fit up an exhaust, I'd get this. Thanks for the sound clips and comparison; very comprehensively done!
After having the car for a while now, I love the color. The way it changes in different lighting is so cool. It wasn't my 1st choice in color, basically took what I could get, but glad I ended up with it.
Well done Justin. Your videos are precise and well edited. I wrote to borla and ask them about the header system and they said it will be ready in September. They are making the full exhaust for the new gr86 spec racer car
They have to be careful how they design that header, it could change the power band and shift that peak torue to the higher rpm's which will kill the gr86 low end torque that they just got working.
Great choice sir. I'm torn between your Borla S type and HKS's 'Hi-Power SPEC-L II' for the GR86/BRZ platform, because they both have similar tones in their sound - you can hear the higher frequencies of the engine note (a bit like octaves you find on a piano keyboard in Music theory - an interval whose higher note has a sound-wave frequency of vibration twice that of its lower note). This may sound like a stretch but dare I say it, the higher frequency tones remind me of a flat plane crank V8 of an old school F1 car. I guess to make a decision, you would have to hear the exhausts side by side, in real life. Apologies for the lengthy and geeky comment 😅 and keep up the great work Justin!
I like Borla exhaust it's within my price range. Good enough from stock, not over exaggerated from the sound compare to other exhaust system that's over price and does the same thing. I have Borla exhaust on my mitsubishi lancer sounds great, I'm happy with it and cops in my area doesn't seem to be bother by it. I'll be buying Borla again in my future car installation for GR86. Thanks for the video I appreciate your input on this
Just got my BRZ about a month ago and am already looking for a new exhaust. This video cements my choice of going with the Borla. Im 20 years old but i agree with what an “old man” commenter ( @TypeVertigo ) said about this being an “OEM+” sounding exhaust, and it being different enough to stand out without seeking a lot of attention, which is exactly what I want. Great vid, thanks!

In the cabin it sounds slightly higher pitched at least to my ear, the difference is negligible. From the back of the car it’s night and day and the Borla sounds much better.
Yep, that's pretty accurate. Inside the car you definitely hear the exhaust growl more at startup and slow acceleration. Higher RPM's and accelerating is more similar to OEM exhaust.
nice! this is the exhaust I would like to get. maybe before the end of the year. I see you are local.. I am in AZ as well. I just ordered some RCE SS1's, 20mm spacers and extended lug nuts for my suspension setup.

I’m slightly torn between them. But Subaru letting you order a car in the exact spec you want without markup seems a lot easier to purchase one from.

@TheBTRGarage I installed this exhaust on my GR86 but my main muffler ( just after the cat ) is so close to the chassis ( where there isn't any factory heat shields ) that it over heats the chassis. Its quite significant, its smells like the paint is getting overheated. Where I live, it's still cold, so I fear the summer when it gets really hot it'll be even worse. Are you experiencing this too? I''m either considering adding heat shields, however there is only about 1/2 inch clearance, or just selling it and getting something designed for the GR86/22+BRZ.
You're talking about the long muffler that goes straight along the driveshaft, right? I haven't had any issue like that at all, and I've raced the car in 100° Phoenix heat several times already. Plus, many other (not as hot) races. I will get under the car and take a look though, that is weird for sure. Edit: I don't remember clearance being that tight...I'll check.
@@TheBTRGarage Yes, the long muffler along the driveshaft. I really do enjoy this Borla exhaust note and not too obnoxious volume, so I hope to figure this out.
