    I hate cutting the grass and don't give a damn about my lawnmower beyond regular maintenance, so I don't have to put extra money in it. Yet I found myself watching a good ol boy fix a lawn mower, and a couple videos later I'm now invested in what's to come for this old Chevy. I appreciate your commentary and honesty when you don't know something. I also appreciate you admit the struggle the rest of us garage tinkerers experience when something straight forward turns into 4 hours and a few tools thrown across the garage. I hope the channel continues to grow for you.

      Thank you for the kind words! The channel is doing better than I ever expected it to do. It’s funny, the better it does the more time and work I want to put in to it!

      I had so much trouble with my 700r4 I swapped it for a th350 and needed a longer driveshaft, I was told by the best shop in town that you can't lengthen it but you can shorten one so I grabbed a 83 inch aluminum shaft from a junkyard and let them cut and balance it, wanted to get a 5 speed but couldn't find any at the time but I'll be getting one asap, thanks for the video and the heads up on the swap, wasn't sure what to do about the clutch 😅

    I admire a guy who changes his own transmissions! I hope you don't regret NOT changing the rear main seal. I didn't do it on my first ever transmission replacement. I ended up pulling it back out a year later to replace the seal. Now i dont replace a tranny without replacing the rear main seal. Yeah i know, only 50K on the engine. Maybe it will be OK...
    Good job on the manual swap!

      Trust me I thought long and hard about doing it ! The seal was bone dry and with my luck it would leak after I’d change it.

      @LaidOffGarage There's videos of how to change them easily. They used 2 screws and a claw hammer to remove it. Then a 4" pack pipe to install. With some assembly lube. Quick painless insurance to not have to pull a mf'n tranny again.

    Cool channel.
    A few things I thought of while watching. I know you may have these on your list but here goes -
    Lay down plastic drop clothes before removing the auto trans (you know you're going to spill so just cover your floor before you spill).
    Clean (power wash) the manual trans before putting it in.
    Clean (power wash) manual cross member before putting it in.
    Pinion seal may be leaking. Maybe change out the old gear oil.
    New hitch.
    Install the front tow hooks from the donor truck on the new truck.
    Good luck with it.

    1991 that’s an oldie but goodie, anything that old is dust where I live in the salt belt👍 That second truck looks like my last truck 07 Silverado, when I sold it had 350 thousand miles original engine and transmission 👍 Last stick and truck I’ll ever own, I’m retired carpenter.

    I have an ‘89 K1500 and there’s hardly a speck of rust on it. 5.7 with the 700R4 tranny. I have to get it back together and on the road again. Probably be my next sizable project.
    That parts truck was LIT!

    Bahahahaha…Buffering, that’s pretty funny stuff. I’ve done the same thing with a 74 Jimmy to a 76 Chevy pick up and back those days the brake pedal and the clutch pedal were all one assembly. I was surprised to see that that clutch is separate. I may try that on my 1990 that I have. Cool video thanks.

    I love the old Chevy/GMC’s especially the late 70’s early 80’s, but I’m really liking that Wheelhorse!!! Love my 89 312-8, it’s a tank!!!

    Cool project. I still have my 04 dodge i bought amd ordered it with a 5 speed and have my late uncles 93 chevy s10 4.3 5 speed. I definitely prefer a manual. My uncle bought the s10 early 94, it was a salesman's ride for a couple months

    I'm a new subscriber from Texas and I 'am interested in doing that transmission swap myself, I appreciate your honesty as you did this and hopefully I'll learn about what else you do. I feel you are never to old to learn something new so I try to learn something every day. Thanks again now I know a little bit more about how to plan my swap and what's involved. 😊

      @@LaidOffGarage Thank you friend! I think I'm going to do just like you did find a salvage truck with all the parts I need, that sounds like the most since. I have a 94 c2500hd long box with a 5.7 Lt and a corporate 14 bolt rear differential with the 9.5 inch ring gear and 3:73 gears . I figure it shouldn't be to hard to find one with a manual transmission.

    • @LaidOffGarage
      @LaidOffGarage  6 місяців тому +1

      I noticed after I published the video that I didn’t even say what model of trans it was that I installed. I used the nv3500 which will survive behind a stock 5.7 but it’s not recommended. If you plan on working yours id for sure try to find one with an nv4500. The only real headache I’ve had during the swap is the driveshaft. I ended up finding an aluminum shaft and am currently having it shortened to fit. An expense I could have saved had I found a parts truck with the right wheel base.

    • @ezekielmoorejr3145
      @ezekielmoorejr3145 6 місяців тому

      @@LaidOffGarage Yeah I was going to look for a nv4500 because eventually I want to swap out the 5.7 with a 7.4 Lt. I was wondering though did you use the starter for the manual transmission or was the automatic starter compatible with the manual flywheel? I know on fords the manual starters are different teeth counts than the automatic ones.

    • @LaidOffGarage
      @LaidOffGarage  6 місяців тому +1

      Starter worked fine with manual flywheel. Speedometer pigtail was the same as well. Plugged right in. Reverse lights are probably the trickiest but still not bad. You’ll just have to find them in the harness and jump them to the reverse switch on the manual trans. The 700r4 did not use a reverse switch. The auto steering column neutral/park switch does that.

    Hopefully you see this. I have a 96 4wd I'm doing an SM465 swap into. It would be neat if you did a video on finishing up the little things with the manual swap. Like installing the new driveshaft, where you got it/if you had it custom made and the price. Also the reverse wiring/speed sensor. If you plan on getting those working, I'd like to see how you adapt it into the existing automatic wiring. Good video man, I'd say you did a fantastic job especially without a lift and a trans jack.

    • @LaidOffGarage
      @LaidOffGarage  4 місяці тому +1

      I ended up finding an aluminum driveshaft from a Chevy express van and had it shortened. Needed that done and a conversion ujoint for the rear end. The the 4l80/60s use the same slip yoke as the nv3500. I haven’t tackled the reverse light wiring yet but I plan on doing it one day. I’ve got roughly 500 miles on the swap and it’s been perfect! Feel free to ask me any questions and hopefully I’ll be able to help!
