Tappets, the ol wooden dowel trick ground down and tapped into the push rod slot...that's what i do as a shade tree guy. Great informative video man
Once I took the head off I used vinyl tubing to hold the tappets because my hardware store didn't have any wooden dowels
Just got done swapping one ... sure is time consuming.. fishing the new tappets in place..common rail block would be much worse ...but anyway
@@jessiej3991 👍👍that would work too...I was gonna do that but I didn't wanna waste my 1/2" airline
That’s how i do it too
Great vids I wish you were closer. My 1st gen started to sweat coolant at that front #1 corner. 😢
I'VE BUILT SEVERAL IF THESE MOTORS AND HAVE COME ACROSS THIS CAM ISSUE AND IT'S DUE TO NOT CHANGING TGE OIL OFTEN ENOUGH
OIL BRAKES DWN AND YOU GET CAM WEAR BUT I'VE FOUND THAT IT ONLY EFFECTS TGE CAM AND NOTHING ELSE .
I slowed down the video when you were putting the tappet cover on and the head gasket. It looks like you applied extra case sealant after you installed the tappet cover and after the head gasket was laid in place. Was that to seal up the edges of both? I really like these tips but I don't want to miss anything.
It doesn’t hurt to add a bit extra. Also depends on the block surface sometimes I add some it some spots
Great Tips !
👍👍.... swapped cam in chassis few Days ago... pulled it to replace gear case/block gasket and seen slight flaking on a lobe... probably would've been fine, but..have always wanted to upgrade to see what it'll do...replaced the front bushing there, and swapped in a 178/208 Hamilton and tappets... waiting for 103# valve springs to show up... could I have ran it without upgrading springs or..?... You don't have to answer on here if u don't want to...but anyway.. thanks for another video...catch ya on the next one 👍 👊
For a cam that size you don’t need springs. But bit extra spring never hurts
What is case sealant? You mentioned that when you talked about sealing the top of the engine block and the side cover. I am going to do this "fix" on my 12 valve Cummins. I do not want any oil leaks. Best regards Trond Vidar Bostad, Trondheim, Norway.
It’s acdelco engine sealant. You check out my Amazon store in products I use it’s in there.
Are you going to put new engine mounts on it? 12 valve mounts are hard to tell if bad if they’re in the truck.
I looked at these ones and they look ok to me
Could I order one of them head surfacing blocks
second that

Does the additional silicone on the head gasket not affect the way it crushes when torqued?
I have never had a issue. If both surfaces are really good I don’t use anything. But I have done it like this like 500 times over the years
