- Hear the Matariki story of Ngāti Toa Rangatira iwi (tribe), Te Papa’s iwi in residence, retold for children by kaumātua (elder) Te Waari Carkeek. Beautiful time-lapse photography reveals places in the Wellington region that are significant to Ngāti Toa, such as Mana Island, Kapiti Island, the Tararua Ranges, and Te-Upoko-o-te-Ika-a-Māui (Wellington Harbour). A soundscape of taonga puoro, or Māori musical instruments, accompanies the narration.
Māori words and definitions, in the order they’re heard in the video:
• whānau - family
• Papatūānuku/Papa - earth mother
• mauri - life principle
• kuia - female elder
• kai - food
• rongoā - medicine
• kākahu - clothing
• pūkenga - skills
• te wao nui a Tāne - the great forests of Tāne

Mihi atu Te Waari, Yes will use this for Matariki Day at OC College for Yr 7&8's
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful resource.
I have found this very valuable for my students in learning about Matariki on a deeper level. Nga mihi :)
Wonderful story, it has given me a deeper understanding. Love how it links..
According to Ngāti Toa, how did Mataarki come to be?
The twin sister of tawhirimatea that was cast to the heavens, protected by her father Ranginui till she returned to earth to visit her mother papatuanuku the tohu of New beginning.
Awesome interpretation
cool I like that video
🌏❤👍
I go to Chaucer school in Auckland blockhouse bay
Should have gone to Specsavers. "Seven sisters"!!
This story says Matariki is the mother, and the other six are her daughters, the "six sisters".
Other Iwi believe there are 9 stars.
Another story is that the name "Matariki" is short for "Nga *Mata* o te *Ariki* Tawhirimatea" (the eyes of Tawhirimatea). Tawhiri was so angry when his siblings separated their parents, Rangi and Papa, that he tore out his eyes and cast them into the sky.
Does Ngati toa know who Pohutukawa is? Or Hiwaiterangi?
