Thank you so much for the well done explanation. I might add a few things having studied Tai Chi more in-depth than QiGong, but of course Tai Chi is a form of Qigong as you mention and I agree. The term Qigong is more of a general term unless it is further classified such as medical Qigong. But there are also many styles of Tai Chi as well. I specifically studied Yang Style from Master TT Liang who was head student of Chen Man Ching. I also studied Hwa Yu Tai Chi from Grandmaster John Chung Li who was just an amazing being who possessed seemingly super natural strength in spite of being about 75 years old when I studied with him.
First I will say there are different levels of studying Tai Chi as I think you'll find with almost anything. You can be a moderately proficient piano player or you can be a high level concert pianist. Same thing with Tai Chi. Many people learn it as a relaxing form of movement that increases circulation and loosens your joints and relaxes your mind. It has all around health benefits. Some of the postures which are the individual movement positions you perform are a little more difficult then others, such as Snake Creeps Down pose where you can be bending all the way down on one leg with the other leg out straight to the side. It's the pose most often used in pictures and looks cool but takes a lot of leg strength to get into and out of that position. Beginners are lucky to do it only 1/2 way. And that is fine.
But if you wish to get into the more advanced Tai Chi levels it can take a considerable more amount of work. When I studied Yang style from the Chen Man Ching lineage we did a lot of drills. Shifting weight from one leg to the other, back and forth, for about 20 to 30 min. I can tell you one day we did that so much that the day after I was unable to go down a set of stairs without excruciating sensation of pain. But during the exercise it didn't really bother me at all. The pain of course was all part of the practice of strengthening the chi or energy flow along with the muscles. After a while the pain goes away and you can practice at a higher level with much greater strength.
In the Hwa Yu Tai Chi with Grandmaster Li he had us doing statis standing. Standing is when you hold one pose and don't move for anywhere from 5 min to 1 hour. Of course you start out low and work your way up. But again you do go through that familiar phase when it can be considerably painful.
In any form of Tai Chi most people would like to achieve a level of the fluid gracefulness that we see when it is performed by a master. I know I did. And that takes some diligent work. But the benefits are well worth it. Here is one example: Prior to taking Tai Chi I did some Kung Fu. That was fast moving and exciting. I loved it. We also did a lot of stretching, sometimes you had a partner in stretching and the partners job was to push on you to force the stretch to be deeper. This also created that pain phenomena I mentioned earlier, ha! But when I did Tai Chi after I became proficient I found just doing the simple form slowly with gracefully my body was even more loose then if I had done the more excruciating stretching we did in my Kung Fu practice. I was always amazed at how good I felt after doing the entire Yang Style form. When going home from class if there were trash barrels set out for pickup I would just fly over them. Of course I was much younger then too!
In looking at the examples of the Qigong exercises that have more fluid movement they seem very similar to Tai Chi although actually even more deep stretching built into the movement. In Tai Chi there is some moves that involve stretching but nothing where you accentuate the stretch to get more blood and stagnant energy movement.
I'll just end by saying I just signed up for White Tiger Qigong classes and I'm very excited to learn more. I especially like that there are specific exercises for specific health issues and/or for the internal organs. In Asian Medicine the health of the internal organs is very much a focus of the practice to achieve good health and longevity! Thank you I hope you don't mind I discussed some of my experience with Tai Chi!
Happy New Year and Blessings to Everyone! 😊

That was a great video. Very well explained. I wonder if you could also explain the difference between white tiger qigong and the type of qigong taught by Lee Holden. They are both qigong but very different and I’m trying to decide which direction to go. Thank you.

What I can say is, White Tiger Qigong is ancient Taoist Qigong and Chinese Medicine fused with cutting-edge science with a curriculum developed by professional education experts. I do not know much about his Qigong, but what our students who moved to our system from his told us that his style is a synthesis of different styles of Qigong that he created and calls Modern Qigong. I cannot judge whether it is bad or good, so I suggest buying our online course 8 Trigram Qigong and buy one of his courses and see yourself. Let me know how it goes. Happy to answer any questions you have.

Hi, thank you for the great video. I’m planing to buy an online White Tiger course however not sure which one to go for? I’m trying to decide between the 5 animal qigong, 5 element qigong and the 8 trigram qigong? Could you help us to understand the differences between them and give some guidance as to which course to choose from please? Thank you in advance.

It is clear that Tai Chi is one more combat technique. But in both cases the key is to maintain and circulate the Qi, the Sexual Energy within the Cinnabar Field.
In my personal case, I have lost my Seminal Energy for almost 10 years. No matter how long you are alone or in a couple.
The key is to persevere in practices like the Big Draw Method, the Lower Seals, the Opening of Channels, etc.
    Greetings from Colombia, South America.

If someone can't bend their wrists due to injury, which one would be better?

    • @WhiteTigerQigong

This depends on what kind of injury it is, what stage the injury is in, etc. We would need much more details. At the end of the day for injuries it is best to consult your doctor or physiotherapist.
