Blade Runner is one of my favourite movies because of its beautiful visuals, ambiguous ending and its great direction by Ridley Scott making it a neo noir classic.
I love the movie, too, but the ending isn't ambiguous. All of the replicants are dead except Rachael, and Deckard is "running away" with her to be with her as long as she lasts.

Watchmen , Memento , Blue Velvet , Fargo , Miller's Crossing , Angel Heart , Oldboy (2003) , Gone Baby Gone , Even The Dark Knight had some Neo-Noir feel to it.
Michael The Filmmaker Dude It's not dumb at all. Where's the detective and the femme fatale? The only things it has in common with neo noir is the lighting and the anti hero. It has the style of a neo noir, but it isn't one,
Michael The Filmmaker Dude The definition of both noir and neo noir are debatable, but I've found that the most common is the typical detective crime thriller with femme fatales and a lack of morality, with low key lighting and shadows. Usually neo noir is the same but in colour and with fluorescent lighting, or just a new noir film. There's nothing official, though, and the definition is subjective, but most of the films in this list fit the most common definition of neo noir. Let's not forget that 'neo' literally translates to 'new'.
No Country for Old Men definitely is a neo-noir, it checks just about every box on the criteria +Nere guar gave. Drive however, certainly isnt a neo-noir.
While his films don't lend to the tropes of classic film noir, Michael Mann absolutely defined modern neo noir with his slick style, dimensional yet flawed characters, and fascinating dynamics between cops and criminals. Films like Thief, Manhunter, Heat, & Collateral all have a valid right to vye for inclusion in some of the best work in the neo noir genre.
So glad you put The Last Seduction in. Check out Exotica, Last Seduction, One False Move, Lonestar, Red Rock West and Bound. Those are my 'you've never heard of these but you will love them' recommendations from the 90's.

I agree. I am a student of noir, and in the past two days, I watched most of these movies again. The films that incorporate the highest number of film noir tropes most often and most effectively were Body Heat and Blade Runner.
I think Red Rock West should be on the list. Its classical type but had a great script. The movie was not made as well though but still its very good. I also liked Shallow Grave which is very under rated.
7. Dark City (1998) 6. Blade Runner (1982) 5. Harry Canyon from Heavy Metal (1981) 4. Chinatown (1974) 3. A Walk Among the Tombstone (2016) 2. Sin City (2005) 1. L.A Confidential (1997)

@@johnnybmean74 No. It utilized a film noir approach, which typically has a man meet a femme fatale and find himself moving into a dark realm. It is a trope, not a rip off.
I agree completely with number one, though I'd place 'L.A. Confidential' somewhere higher, somewhere between two or three. I'd also place 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' on the list instead of just putting it one the honorable mentions.
Well, at least they got #1 right. Chinatown is not only the best neo noir film ever made, it is arguably the best movie of all time, with all due respect to Citizen Kane & The Godfather.
Christopher Nolan's a master of neo-noir, but if I had to put one of his on the list (shame none of them are on this list), it would either be Following or Memento. I'd also include Quentin's Reservoir Dogs and Michael Mann's Collateral.
But the dark knight is really the only movie of his you reference. And why didn't you include Memento? Half of it was literally film noir, black and white.
Fight Club, Nightcrawler, Oldboy, Fargo, Taxi Driver, Psycho, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, John Wick, Kill Bill, Zodiac, The French Connection... We need new lists

An accurate list, as usual. I just missed Christopher Nolan's works. Insomnia is a complete neo-noir movie, which uses contradictorily 'daylight' as a background. However, it takes part of the plot, as you may recall. And the Dark Knight Trilogy. A pretty dark neo-noir saga. You've managed to put Sin City on the list...
It sort of fits into almost every category in film (Western, Noir, crime, action, art house, romance, drama, even horror at one point), so I can kind of see how some can say its not a neo noir, but I still think it is. It has a fair amount of Noir archetypes, and I also consider crime drama to be a film noir as well, just slightly different in storylines and characters.
Some of my favourite films of all time are on this list... And it is, but only at number 2, eh? Hmm, what could top it? ... Ah, Chinatown. Okay, cool, good film, to be honest I didn't really think of it as neo-noir, just good old noir.
This is a hard list to make as the genre is very hard to define, but Taxi Driver? It is considered the beginning of Neo Noir and it is also one of the best movies ever made.
don't know where you heard that Taxi driver is considered the beginning of neo-noir but it's not true at all.😂 neo-noir was around in the early 60s and even the French Connection came out in '71

Isn't Drive considered a neo-noir? Chinatown is well deserving. I don't know if a David Lynch movie fits under any genre but if you did I would choose Blue Velvet before Mulholland Drive. Both Great

10. Dark City 9. The Long Goodbye 8. Sin City 7. Se7en 6. The Usual Suspects 5. Brick 4. L.A. Confidential 3. Mallhollen Drive 2. Blade Runner 1. Chaintown
Great list and great genre. I would probably would take off Seven and put on Memento. Was not expecting to see Mulholland Drive but it's one of my favs and could be interchangeable with Blue Velvet. Wish there was more Neo Noir in general. A shame there is only english language movies on this list tho, there are many great foreign Neo Noir as well, enough for another top 10. Oh, and fuck yeah Roger Rabbit!
Nice one. I would have put "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in the Top 10 for sure, since it is one of my all-time favourite movies and it drips with Noir vibe. But then again, I don't seem to find many people who agree with me about that movie...
+Happy Birthday2014 I definitely agree. Chinatown and Blade Runner belong on top. I think Blood Simple deserves a spot on the top ten, but I agree with this list more than I do with most of Mojo's rankings.
There's a PhD dissertation waiting to be written by a film student who can sort out this utter mess of a distinction between noir and neo-noir. Mulholland Drive? What?
Dark City is AMAZING. I dont consider it noir but its dark and it could be. My fav actual Modern noir: LA Confidential. No contest. Not even Chinatown holds a candle IMO
I get the joke "se7en" at number 7 but I feel like it should have been placed higher on the list. A jokes a joke but come on, "se7en" is better than "the Usual Suspects".
Making a list of the best neo-noirs is counterproductive if you spoil the endings of several of them! This video spoiled the endings of The Long Goodbye, Seven, and Chinatown. Luckily I have already seen them, but this video could help others discover them, and spoiling the endings takes away the impact of those great films.
My favorite Mojo list so far. I love all the movies (Seriously, if you haven't watched 'Brick', go see it ASAP), and the positions are pretty good. Some other mentions: "Drive" and "The French Connection", "
I like how Kevin Spacey is in half of these movies

Angel Heart, Memento, Gone Baby Gone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Blue Velvet...
I love Blade Runner it’s easily one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time but it’s difficult to argue against Chinatown not only being a better neo-noir but a superior film overall.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang should've gotten more than an honorable mention, that's one of my favorite movies.
10. Dark City
9. The Long Goodbye
8. Sin City
7. Se7en
6. The Usual Suspects
5. Brick
4. L.A. Confidential
3. Mallhollen Drive
2. Blade Runner
Oh, and fuck yeah Roger Rabbit!
glad gattaca got a mention at least. such an underrated film
finally my favorite film "dark city" gets some love :)
A couple of Gene Hackman movies might've merited a mention: "Night Moves" from 1975 and "No Way Out" from 1987.
Where's "Angel Heart" ?
So glad they included Brick, it's one of my favourite movies and didn't think anyone else even watched it.
Dope list but where's Minority Report? That movie had some Neo noir qualities and it was better than at least 2 films that made the list imo
Nice one. I would have put "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in the Top 10 for sure, since it is one of my all-time favourite movies and it drips with Noir vibe. But then again, I don't seem to find many people who agree with me about that movie...
what about reservoir dogs?
+txmvs yvrxk reservoir dogs wasn't good
what ? you are blind right?
no I'm just know whats good txmvs yvrxk
+samuel rigby
You're clearly tasteless....
Reservoir Dogs is the greatest independent piece of Cinema of all time.
+txmvs yvrxk good movie or not, its not film noir
I'm pretty sure half of the people in these comments don't even know what the style 'neo noir' entails....
For once, I agree with the number 1.
+Happy Birthday2014 I definitely agree. Chinatown and Blade Runner belong on top. I think Blood Simple deserves a spot on the top ten, but I agree with this list more than I do with most of Mojo's rankings.
AHHH BRICK IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIEs. JGL best movie. Probably the best movie list so far.
Pulp Fiction? Resevoir Dogs?
It's not neo-noir films
probably my favourite WatchMojo list so far, another great job guys :D
I am just wondering if "Se7en" would be called "Fo4r" would it be on your 4th place?
Four deadly sins? lol
*****
U liked your own comment?
LoL! Do you give yourself a bj too?
SplinterSTAN As opposed to giving random people bj's, absolutely!
*****
The problem is that noone else gives you a bj looser!
SplinterSTAN I got that covered, thank you.
You missed out Memento, Fargo, Taxi Driver, Reservoir Dogs, Red Rock West, The Grifters, Blue Velvet, A Simple Plan, Angel Heart and Bound.
There's a PhD dissertation waiting to be written by a film student who can sort out this utter mess of a distinction between noir and neo-noir. Mulholland Drive? What?
There is a book called The Philosophy Of Neo Noir by Mark T. Conard, IMHO it's as good as it gets.
Dark City is AMAZING. I dont consider it noir but its dark and it could be. My fav actual Modern noir: LA Confidential. No contest. Not even Chinatown holds a candle IMO
The Usual Suspects should have been higher.
Chinatown is the reason we have this genre. Taking noir roots whilst modernising and re contextualising them.
Le Samurai...
So basically one of the key factors to a noir film is having Kevin spacey in as a main character.
Drive is considered a Neo Noir film?
It is. It's actually called "Neon-noir", alongside Blade Runner.
It should be on here. One of the best films from the last 5 years.
I love Brick i actually was already raging when I expected it never to appear more than 6. So it hit me right into the face. Its just so good.
Where are "Angel Heart", "Memento" and "Drive"????
1. Body Heat, one of the best dramas of all time. Lifetime best performances by William Hurt and Kathleen Turner.
I get the joke "se7en" at number 7 but I feel like it should have been placed higher on the list. A jokes a joke but come on, "se7en" is better than "the Usual Suspects".
Uriel Gavito they are very close but I slightly prefer TUS

Making a list of the best neo-noirs is counterproductive if you spoil the endings of several of them! This video spoiled the endings of The Long Goodbye, Seven, and Chinatown. Luckily I have already seen them, but this video could help others discover them, and spoiling the endings takes away the impact of those great films.
Millers Crossing?
My favorite Mojo list so far. I love all the movies (Seriously, if you haven't watched 'Brick', go see it ASAP), and the positions are pretty good.
Some other mentions: "Drive" and "The French Connection", "
Pulp Fiction?
Dark City, what an underrated gem. I'm surprised it wasn't in top 10 underrated movies. Maybe you'll do a (REDUX) of that list.
Sin City should be higher
Another suggestion: Wild Things (1999)
Im not kidding! This movie is pure neo-noir. Real nice people getting bad.
