Have you tried companion planting.. not putting all cabbage in one bed.. that helps to hide them.. plant flowers in the beds that might repel certain bugs.. it may not stop them completely, just slow them down until you can take care of the problem.
Agreed. We love our back yard grocery store. In fact this week on the Tuesday media share, I posted my vlog entitled “Our Back Yard Grocery Store is Evolving!” We love harvesting food from our “Store” to add to the dinner table. 👍
Zack, bug netting REALLY made a huge difference on our cabbage this year. We had beautiful cabbage and zero 🐛 bug damage. I highly recommend it! We will do it again this fall. We grow fresh eating cabbage in spring and abundance of cabbage for kraut in the fall.
I pick my beans as they mature, but one year with an early frost coming I pulled all the plants, put some newspaper down and picked beans in the living room while watching TV! I didn't hate it! 😅
Thanks for the encouragement. I need it! I started late this year. Last year I started on time but did not keep up with my garden as I was making sure my friend came home from the hospital after “C” with all her plants still alive.
Hey y'all, I just love your channel and your family!! Your garden looks wonderful and love your idea about tracking the garden to learn what works and what does not. We will definitely be doing this.
Using your broccoli leaves for greens!! So yummy. I also left my cabbage in after harvesting the main head and got medium to smaller off shoot heads. Red and green cabbage both will do it. Love watching you both.
When my kids were little they each wanted their own garden. 2 of 5 did very well with it. The other 3 decided they did not like gardening. Now only 2 of the 3 that didn't like gardening as a kid, have and love to garden (3rd does it because of this wife, lol). :) Keep at it, they will learn great lessons, and decide if they want to continue as adults.
This year has been our craziest bug year EVER. We are in our 3rd year of gardens here and it's like the bugs told their friends there was a buffet. We lost our whole tomato harvest to leaf footed bugs. We thought they were assassin bugs. Hopefully the San Marzano and Juliet's will hang on and still give us something. We are in Texas so the heat shortens our tomato harvest. We should get some fall tomatoes though.
Oh my goodness, that plant you showed that produces craft beads is call Job's tears, it's biblical. My grandmother would make rosaries out if them. I'm in my 60's and haven't thought about Job's tears since i was a little girl. I'll have to get some seeds for next year's garden. She also grew a plant called a money tree. I'll have to look for that one too. That's for sharing all you do. I appreciate you show your failures and successes.
I know, I live in Maine and my tomatoes have only just blossomed..no sign of fruit..but that's the normal for us...I do look on with a bit of envy at your garden and the length of your growing season. You all are planting and we still have snow on the ground. But its how it is❤
Hey Zach and Jen...if you plant dill in and around the cucumber plants it will keep cucumber bugs away..sane if you plant luffa and cucumbers together.
I just got my garden started! I'm a new gardener. I didn't get my seeds started so I bought starts at a local nursery (much cheaper than the box stores). I put 64 tomato plants in the ground last night, lol. More stuff going in tomorrow and I think I have just enough time to get potatoes in and start seeds for the fall garden. I might have lost alot of time but, I still have alot left!😊
EVERY YEAR I HAVE MY GRANDCHILDREN PICK OUT A YOUNG PUMPKIN AND I CARVE THEIR NAME IN IT. THE PUMPKIN GROWS AND THEIR NAME BECOMES MORE PROMINENT. YOU MUST GIVE THIS A TRY AND HAVE FUN WITH IDEAS. 🥰🥰🥰
I'm too hard-headed to quit LOL! Loved the garden tour! I'm in SW VA so mine is a little behind yalls. Plus, we had nights still in the low 30's way up in May so yeah, a little late is better than never. Lord willing I'll never quit gardening and I didn't grow up doing it either so I'm learning all the time and everything is new and fresh! I wish I could send yall some pics of my garden!! I'll dig around see if I can find an email. Hope Jen is doing well.
So encouraging! This was the year I had an epic garden planned. In actuality I have a huge jungle with very few edible plants. I walk out there, and just shake my head. Thank God for a great farmers market and lots of Amish ladies that grow epic gardens.
Not sure what kind of netting you are using, but this year I used tulle, like is under a wedding dress? Fabric store. I used wooden stakes to keep it up away from big leaves, sewed the long strips together and weighted all edges. Worked beautifully. No cabbage moth damage or army worms.
We are with you ,, we are about 5 weeks behind in our garden too ,,it looks really good ,but just have to wait ,, we are in northeast missouri ,, and our springs here have been really late for a few years now ,,, Ed
Hello, your garden is doing good. I wanted to reach in and grab that big green tomato for fried green tomatoes lol!! My tomatoes are all coming out small. Just harvest a bunch of peas. With all the recalls I'm scared of store food. Enjoy your 4th of July Weekend.
I'm in Louisville and about six weeks behind because the Spring weather was very windy and uncooperative for properly hardening off seedlings. I don't have a greenhouse. I was six weeks behind last year too because of a cold, wet Spring. [Sigh]
My squash is not getting pollinated this year. Tomatoes growing. Have to wait till fall for a lot. In Florida it is so hot. Sweet potatoe, herbs and asparagus love it.
Yeah we are east-central Georgia and have been eating zucchini and squash for over a month! But the lettuce... ugh the heat killed it. Try again in the fall. Oh and green beans! Lots. We're freeze drying a bunch and have some in the freezer for use during the week.
Our garden has done different this year too. It's really taken off now also. I need to trim my tomatoes out to get more air around them. I still don't understand how to trim them lol
At the beginning of the video I saw the sprinkler and was going to ask so I'm glad that you talked about it. What was your fix for the way the chickens were getting around it? I'm in zone 8b so I know all about watching people in warmer zones start to sprout & harvest before me. I just remind myself that comparison is the killer of joy. Love you guys!
Hey Zach, hey Jen, hey Wyatt, hey Rey-Rey... As for the Zinnias, yes zinnias are edible but they say it's best to cook with the petals. I'm glad I looked it up, because next year after we get settled in our new place (can't wait to move) I'm gonna' plant a bunch of them. Thank you guys for sharing a bit of your lives with me.
Everything looks wonderful!! For the first time ever my garden has an issue with the straw having been sprayed. I went to a nursery so I just assumed it was safe. My Cherokee Purple tomatoes are 2 ft tall. Plant's transferred to raised beds at the beginning of May. I am SO 😭 sad!! I spent $100 on soil only to have plants be stunted by a $3.00 bale of straw. Lesson learned. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Happy a happy 4th of July!!🗽🧨🎉🎉
I planted peppers twice they never came up...My tomatoes and cucumbers are doing Farley well just growing slow...I live in Kentucky also and were not getting much rain very dry...
I pulled my broccoli and cabbage and planted greenbeans, cow peas in that bed and a couple different cucumber varieties. Lufas are taking off but no fruit yet. 🤞all the corn I planted, not one came up. I think the seed was bad. Oh well, planted potatoes late. 🤷♀️
Yes! I just keep planting and planting. These "failures" always teach us so much!! I'm savoring the season. Thank YOU for inspiring me to keep at IT, We're all doing such important WORK!
Yes I am well aware of failures. I have 2garden spots. Last year I ordered compost from my usual company and got a bad batch. I lost my entire garden of cukes, beans, 45 tomato plants, zucchini, all squashes, 8 (25') rows of sweet corn, peppers , cabbages, beets. .All died or didn't grow very well. All stunted and no produce you could eat. It was a big disappointment after all the work one puts into growing your own food. The compost was tainted and I can't use my garden this year I was recommended. But to have all that area lay fallow I just had to try growing something, so yesterday (June 30th) I planted 18 tomato plants that were long and lanky. I told them it was up to them to prove their worth. YES, I talk to my plants and it works for me. Here in Oregon's Willam
It’s great that you teach the kids life lessons. My mom always said when you do too much for people, you handicap them. I now as an older woman have seen that many times. I think you getting in there with her weeding is awesome. Helping them but making them contribute builds such strong family relationships. Both my adult children hate gardening. Breaks my heart but maybe my grand babies will like it. God bless you and your family. I’ve never heard of the flowers that you can use for beads. That is so cool!! Wish the subscriber that gave it to you will volunteer the name. I would love to get some.
Whooo I'll tell you what I do know for next year! That tip about putting an egg in your tomato plant hole is awesome! I tried both ways this year and my plants with an egg are much bigger and healthier than the plants without. So thanks for sharing the tip. I live in Georgia and have decided that squashes, beans, cabbages, and broccoli have to be planted as a fall crop because the bugs just are awful!
I’m in Illinois and I didn’t start zucchini or squash until the beginning of June from seeds. After an epic loss last year to squash bugs, I had read they come out and look to lay eggs in June. Figured no plants yet, they will go away 😂. So far, no bugs and the plants are a good size and I should get a harvest. I lost not only zucchini and squash last year but the cantaloupe, watermelon and cucumbers 😡

MY zinnia are getting eaten up bye Japanese beetles help
I bet old Rusty would love a good brushing!
The Garden looks good. Thanks for the reminder for us not to compare our garden to others. Succession planting is important too. Thanks, Zack.
Your garden looks fabulous !
Blessings always 💯🙏❤️
Good looking garden guys

Good word friend! Thank Ypu!! Just keep swimming swimming swimming…
Love your growth of your garden, and the kids, thank you for sharing Aloha 🌴
Your garden is looking beautiful. Have a blessed day
I'm way behind but happy. The heat is horrible and my late start has been success... Fall garden will be lush and my new "spring" zone💪
God bless
ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR POSSITIVE VIBES!!! THANK YOU!!💚
Enjoyed the garden tour
Thanks for the encouragement. I need it! I started late this year. Last year I started on time but did not keep up with my garden as I was making sure my friend came home from the hospital after “C” with all her plants still alive.
I lost my pumpkins, squash and zucchini already to vine bores and squash bugs. Replanting some tomorrow when my new seeds come in!
Hey y'all, I just love your channel and your family!! Your garden looks wonderful and love your idea about tracking the garden to learn what works and what does not. We will definitely be doing this.
Thank you….I needed that moment of no comparison!! My garden is a bit behind!!
Using your broccoli leaves for greens!! So yummy. I also left my cabbage in after harvesting the main head and got medium to smaller off shoot heads. Red and green cabbage both will do it. Love watching you both.
Plant nasturtium next to your cabbages this fall. They attract the slugs and bugs that go after your cabbages...it looks amazing 👏 great job.
You guys are a big encouragement brother!
I love following you both! Thank you for your time!
Very encoring Zach. Thank you.
What a beautiful potato bed at the entrance. I love that idea!
Love your garden, looks great
I just planted fall tomatoes. They are Homestead tomatoes. Texas is dry where I live. Water restrictions.
heya nice garden tour

You're right Zac! The Zinnias are beautiful especially orange. This was a great video to wake up to.
Great info, thank you
Great message
Preacher preach on!
Love your videos...God bless from East Texas...
Thanks for the pep talk!! I needed that today 🥵🥵🥵

I might have lost alot of time but, I still have alot left!😊
Cabbage leaves are good in stir fry. 😋
What plant produces beads for crafting??
EVERY YEAR I HAVE MY GRANDCHILDREN PICK OUT A YOUNG PUMPKIN AND I CARVE THEIR NAME IN IT. THE PUMPKIN GROWS AND THEIR NAME BECOMES MORE PROMINENT. YOU MUST GIVE THIS A TRY AND HAVE FUN WITH IDEAS. 🥰🥰🥰
Right now my garden is exploding with weeds😂🤣😂🤣

Wow I really needed this pep talk. Ty. Everything seems stunted this year- the bagged soil I've had has sucked.
Awesome!!!!
😊🙏🏻💕🇨🇦

Can Jenn do another comfrey processing video? Harvest, dry, salve...

Thank you so much for the encouragement!
You still have time for corn, go for it!
Do you all mulch your plants? Here in Texas we have a severe drought. Gardens not producing like it should be.
Chopped up weeds feed all our plants. Best mulch ever and love those mexican sunflowers!
Your garden’s are doing beautifully. 🕊💕
Amen on the tomatoes at the grocery store being bland. I have old german and cherokee purple planted.

@zack and Jenn can I buy a start of confery for u guys
Great video!
My tomatoes and beans got eaten off a second time by the deer. Am so bummed, but my potatoes are doing amazing.
My squash is not getting pollinated this year. Tomatoes growing. Have to wait till fall for a lot. In Florida it is so hot. Sweet potatoe, herbs and asparagus love it.
Have you guys considered an overhead timelapse?

The netting has helped my cabbage 100% this year. This may be the first time we actually get more cabbage than the worms.
Hey Zach, hey Jen, hey Wyatt, hey Rey-Rey...

I love my Zinnias too. I have a 1/2 a football field row of them. They make me so happy. I go out and make a little bouquet of them each week. 💕
Everything looks great! I have a bunny nest with wee ones in my kale bed this year...smart Mama, hehe!!! Nothing beats a fresh tomato that's for sure!
I feel a lot behind. Drought in Tennessee and it's crazy hot. The ground around my garden is cracked open
Inner planting onions with your green beans will help eliminate bean beetles. "Carrots Love Tomatoes" is an excellent book for companion planting.
Man I can’t get my squash and zucchini to do well😕 your looks awesome!
Well said 🌱🌱 I have had them ups and down …yup I keep it up
Tomatoes are great 🫑🫑🌱🌱 bell peppers as well
I love ground cherries. Mine have exploded this year cant wait to eat them. Your natural grocery store looks greater
I like the flowers of a Mexican sunflower too but those thorns are brutal!☮️💖🙏🇺🇸🇮🇱🇺🇦✝️✌️
Is that a Cherokee tears plant to craft beads with? I have some of those seeds!
Hornworms are eating my tomatoes ... urghh bummer

I love ground cherries. Mine have exploded this year cant wait to eat them. Your home grown grocery store looks great
Awesome!
I've been keeping a weather diary for 20 plus years...along with my garden layouts. Rotation is key
The garden looks great. I enjoy your excitement. Thank you for sharing all you and Jenn do. 💜
Love you STIVER'S 🙃☺😘😏

@@pedsnursekare Thanks for the info! I'll be our squash bug come out in May. I will definitely remember this next year!
@@dianebeckner884 I also do the egg with tomatoes for a few years now. Definitely makes a difference. Good luck with the bugs next May.
Do u put a whole egg with the shell or without?
@@Tulip879 Just crack a whole egg and drop it (whole but cracked)into the hole before planting your tomato plant.
