  • In this first installment of a 2-part series centering around Greg’s new Inspired Imperfection book we look at what it means for scripture to be “God breathed.” Additionally, we explore to the potential consequences of keeping or removing the bible as an authoritative source in the life of a follower of Jesus. Greg makes the case that far from detracting from the bible’s credibility, if viewed through the lens of the cross, the mistakes and errors in the writing made by the human authors enhance the bible’s authority in showing God’s power through the cross.

How anyone could think this is dangerous or heretical is beyond me! This is beautiful and solidly based in God breathed scripture! Thank you Greg!

I'm not swayed by this argument. Each of these problems do have answers and seeking these answers is a very fruitful experience. I don't think people leave the faith because of problems with scripture (although they might say that's the issue), there is always a deeper heart issue that is the root cause.
That being said, I'm so thankful for people who are brave enough to humbly search for truth in controversial areas like this one. I also respect that the comment section hasn't been disabled! Much love and respect :)

I think you’re completely wrong to assume that people who leave Christianity do so “always” due to a deeper heart issue. That’s just a cop out to not have to accept that people genuinely leave due to reasoning and issues. When God is said to command genocide by an army, there’s reason to doubt wether that instruction really came from God. Christians who respond “don’t question God” to these objections are part of the problem.

Is it fair to consider maybe Paul, in the heat of the moment, was attempting to exalt himself? Was he alluding to believing he was better at making decisions than others? Was he possibly dealing with some kind of jealousy?
    REMEMBER!!!
Paul, if I remember correctly, referred to himself as the chief of sinners, seemingly spoken in the present tense.
I also take other of his writings to clearly be saying he has a very bad problem exercising self discipline/control...diligence!

Good stuff. I look forward to next week. Question: Dr. Boyd mentioned that people have different interpretations of the scriptures, which is great. It begs the question of interpretive method because it seems if we do not have some sense of what is a good interpretive method then we are back to square one, meaning, I can make the Bible say whatever I want it to say; I have authority over the Bible. Perhaps this is addressed next week, but I would welcome some of Dr. Boyd's thoughts on the practice of interpretation and how we get everyone to have some embrace on a core criteria. If there is a resource to which you can point me, that would be great as well. Thanks!

Mark 2:26 is incorrect at least in the translations I check, KJV, NKJV, ESV. And I think 2 kings 24:6, Jerm.36:20, is also incorrect. The others where ok though, I believe. Great study!

Greg Boyd I so greatly appreciate your preaching and your church, and thank you for making these sermons available for all to listen to.
May I provide a little pushback? I agree with you on the progressive revelation of Christ; as more prophecies became available and as they were fulfilled, and with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit now available we have a much greater understanding of the work of Christ than did those in the Ot.
BUT, may I suggest that when it comes to the revelation of God in creation and of creation, we have perhaps gained so much false baggage that the simple truth of God’s word regarding creation is somewhat lost on us? We presuppose that because of science we have a greater understanding of creation, but what if all that passes for science, unproven and unrepeatable, is false, clouding are ability to see clearly?
What if God inspired the words of the firmament, the earth being pressed out as a seal, the foundations of earth, the waters above and below, etc. because that is precisely and accurately descriptive of our world? What if all we have been taught to accept for the last 2,000 years has been a progressive rejection of God, plucking away at the truth so that God’s simple and accurate description of how He created is incomprehensible?
What if the OT writers were, in fact, the wise ones without philosophical and theoretical baggage, and we are the foolish?

It is not foolish to question a book’s inerrancy when it’s claiming an all loving God is specifically himself instructing men, women and children indiscriminately to be killed because of belonging to a particular group of people. If you take this as true, all the sudden Hitler and God don’t seem far apart for wanting to both kill babies based off what particular group they were born into…
