Happy New Year! I travelled to Mainland China during the Christmas break with my Chinese classmate. I decided to travel to Chengdu and Chongqing specifically because I love spicy food and have many friends from Sichuan Province who recommended it to me. Me and my classmate also love Pandas and wanted to visit the Panda base in Chengdu.
This episode is the first one of this series and I will be uploading a few more of my trip from both Chengdu and Chongqing. I hope you enjoy this series and exploring Mainland China with me!

I'd love to talk about spicy food as a mainland Chinese.
There are various types of spicy food available. Sichuan province is renowned for its tongue-numbing sensation in spicy dishes. In Hunan province, the cuisine tends to be both aromatic and spicy. By the way, the spiciest food, as you mentioned, can be found in Jiangxi province.
I hope you have the opportunity to try all these spicy dishes someday.
Chengdu is one of the places that i’ve been seeing popping up a lot! The food there looks amazing, and you’ve captured everything so well!

History note: SiChuan lost 90% of its original inhabitants during the Mongol invasion (1240-1279) and again during the Manchu invasion (1644-1662). Most of the people living in SiChuan today descended from people of HuGuang (ancient mega province that encompassed Hubei and Hunan) that migrated in the last 300 years. As such, Hunan cuisine heavily influenced SiChuan cuisine. Safe travels. Happy 2024.

Girl you came to Chengdu at the worst time of a year. Don't visit here in winter the air quality will be BAD. We're at the very bottom of Sichuan basin no wind in winter here to blow away the pollution.

Actually Hunan province food is more spicy. Its pure hot and spicy without the numbness.

The yellow trees are Ginkgo trees. Normally the leaves are green, but in fall they turn yellow. In Sichuan university campus, there’re many Ginkgo trees. It took the trees 70 years to produce fruits!

If I ever visit China Chengdu will be at the top of my list. I love the bold and spicy flavours of Sichuan cuisine because I am Korean and we have a similar palate. How did a Finnish girl develop such spice tolerance?
