actually obsessed with how the burglar takes a countertop as payment for saving your simself's life 😆😆 seriously though this video has inspired me to learn more about blender (i can only really use it to make sims 4 posepacks for taking in-game photography right now) there's just so many options in there that it's kind of overwhelming
It's so good! And honestly I could totally see that happening in OG Sims too 😂 And then the sim stands in front of the oven like nothing happened. Chef's kiss
Wow you should do it!! If you're already using Blender for that, then it sounds like you're past some of the more annoying initial learning curves. There's so much you can do with this free app, and it really is such an awesome creative outlet if you let yourself go crazy with it. My advice would be to just figure out what you want to make first, then work backwards watching tutorials and doing research as you hit roadblocks with your current skillset. I found learning that way to be a lot more helpful than just watching a bunch of random tutorials and hoping they translate into something I want to make further down the road.
This was such an awesome deep dive into Sims 1. I still play it to this day and it makes me happy to see it getting so much love. I love your recreation!
It really is such a classic! I still feel like TS1 is like the "purest" Sims game in that the core gameplay feels so tight and refined. Thank you so much for watching!
Sims 1 is like robots imitating humans, and designed to look more like a doll house simulation. The other Sims games are intended to be cartoony wacky life simulators
Excellent video! Looking forward to seeing more dives like this. There is something really special about the isometric art style of these early 2000s games. I’d love EA to bring this back for Simcity and the Sims especially with some more modern graphics and animations thrown in there. Gotta keep the jazz and Bossa Nova music of course
I was surprised by the view count! this is quality stuff! Appreciate the summary and recommendations in the description, there is a lot of love poured into your work. I'm looking forward to more of this series!
Dude literally out here claiming the Sims 2 and The Sims Bustin' Out feel like The Sims 3 and 4... Me thinks he never played them... Because they are not tonally consistant at alllll. They aren't even cartoony in the same way.
I just received your video suggestion on UA-cam and MY GOD! Yes, that's exactly what I would like too! I miss that isometric feel, new lighting and volumetric effects, definitely a The Sims in that old, BUT MODERN feel would be A DREAM!
@@BoringBonesTv yess exactly!! Like don’t change anything at all except the graphics and maybe some of the UI and you’d have the perfect Sims game. And maybe get rid of the always-online EA launcher too haha 🤔
@@chomehearts Yes PLEASE! No EA APP needed to play and without ruining this masterpiece. This is actually my biggest fear, I'm almost sure that if they touch this game, it will become a kind of The Sims 4 and that's not good xD
@@chomehearts In fact, if we were able to implement reshade/gshade in The Sims 1, we could definitely make significant changes on our own! I've been doing this with lighting in The Sims 2 and it feels like a different game! At least if there was some way to make it work!
Ah yeah I'm not sure why they insist on reinventing the wheel constantly when the recipe is already there. I guess maximizing shareholder profits doesn't always mean doing what the original fans want haha. Might just be up to the modding scene to figure out as usual 🫠
Your voice is so relaxing and soothing. I love the Sims as I played it a lot when I was a kid and this video took me back 24 years to a place of bliss and simplicity. Thank you 😊
I don't know how old you are, but I'm almost 30 and your video gave me an absurd feeling of nostalgia. The result was very good. The Sims 1 is a remarkable game, a work of art with pre-rendered graphics. Sim City 4 also has this aesthetic and so do several other games, but these two were certainly the last of this era that I consider magical. Congratulations on the excellent work.
dude, how do you only have 300 subscribers??? this video was sooo chill, your voice and vibe would be perfect for long form videos on design and animation holyyy
Haha thank you for the kind words! The channel has grown a lot over the past few days, but I'm still not really that worried about views and subs to be honest. The one thing I do find exciting though is the possibility that having a larger channel could open the door to doing more elaborate videos and even being able to speak to some of the artists and designers themselves of projects we analyze.
awesome! i have an animation degree but no longer work in the field, so it felt great to turn my animation brain back on and analyze a classic game from my childhood alongside you. i'm looking forward to your next video!
Ohh no way! That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you so much for sharing; I hope you're still able to find time to use your animation skills even though you no longer work in the field. Even though I don't have a formal education in design or animation, it's been such a great creative outlet for me that I'm so thankful for.
The analysis and your commentary are very interesting and fun to listen to. I have to admit, the topic of the video really stole my heart. I just got back into the game a few weeks ago, and it's surprisingly still as engaging as when I was a kid. I don’t even feel like going back to my modern games. Thank you for the video, you did a very good job!
It is, right? When playing that original game while creating this video, I couldn't help but get a little lost in it at times. It just feels like a really solid, clean game.
the amount of work that goes into this kind of video can not be understated- this was SO good. i was an avid sims 1 player growing up and still visit the sims 4 semi-frequently, so to see it picked apart with care and appreciate means everything. also would 10/10 play a raytraced version of sims 1, the lighting and shadows somehow made a jarring game even weirder. didn’t know that was possible 😂 keep up the good work, excited to see more of your work! have a fun and safe trip in korea! 🤩
Haha thank you so much! The videos are a lot of work for sure, but the process is so fun that I don't even mind! I'm so happy you liked the video - I'm working on the concept for the new one right now!
Amazing, well thought-out video. You really nailed getting that Sims 1 vibe by breaking down the visual elements & then explained it to us in an easy-to-follow way. Thank you!

Haha right? And as long as you're looking at it from the perfect angle then things look normal. But move juuust a bit and suddenly the entire illusion falls apart.
Very enjoyable watch! I second the comments of how pleasant it is to watch because of you using your normal/soft presenting voice, rather than sceaming! And I can't believe this is a new channel. Fantastic! 💖
what an incredible breakdown of what makes the aesthetic, if you made me explain it myself I don't know that I could've ever put my finger on any of the specifics
My sister and I even have a "The Sims scent" (it is basically just floor cleaning solutions, lmao), so every time we smell that scent, we know it's time to play The Sims!
I have a similar experience when I smell bleach, it brings me back to Sunday afternoons of playing video games like Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon as my mom was cleaning the house🥲
I'm so glad you mentioned it. It reminds me that I also have that scent thing. I have it for sims 2 moreso. I can't even describe it exactly, probably also cleaners or maybe candles or scent sticks. But yeah once in a while I get a whiff of it and I'm like, "smells like the Sims!"
This is such a well crafted analysis and I've actually thought many of these questions and determined some of these vibes myself, so it was really enjoyable and satisfying to watch someone else do it and do it even more detailed! I just HOPE Hollywood is able to incorporate all of these vibes and artistic details and OG styles into their movie they are making with Margot Robbie! NGL, I'm kinda worried about it as an OG Sims fan lol
Very well made, man, look forward to more. I'm watching this assuming I'll look down and see a guy with half a million subs at least. Keep this quality and humor dude and it'll be no time at all.
It feels like a dream I would have about The Sims in 2003 after playing it for 15 hours straight. Great stuff, would love to see a full path traced Sims 1
The finished product kind of reminds me of the Link's Awakening Remake/Echoes of Wisdom. The realistic lighting and simple models makes it look like you're playing with a diorama or toys in a doll house. Very cool effect.
having this video randomly recommended to me feels like i struck gold by finding your channel, your voice is really soothing, the video has just the riiight amount of humour and it sounds like you're really passionate of what youre talking about ❤

Best believe his channel will be up on my TV while I work all day. So damn good. Subbed like 3min into the vid. My YT feed SERVED with this one. So happy to be here. 🖤
Even as a kid the sims felt lonesome like its only your character in the whole game world so dark so abandoned. Eerie indeed... can't forget Bob though lol Edit i had no idea the objects were 2d sprites that make sense why its so damn creepy
Yes - lonesome is a really good way to describe it! There was definitely something eerie and dark about the vibe for sure. Hahaha Bob was a legend - had to give him some extra screen time in this video for sure.
SO GLAD i am not the only one that finds this game creepy and eerrie, uncanny. I remember back in my childhood when i played this for the first time a fire broke out in the kitchen of my sim and it scared the living shit out of me. Just the scruffy obnoxious sound quality and almost claustrophic colorscheme made it feel cursed/haunting. Never played it again after that 😅 still have it on CD-rom!
@@knotskop you supposed to stay long enough to see your sim engulfed in flames then the music stop and gets dead quiet as the grim reaper collects your sim 😂
funnily enough, the ray traced version feels closer to my memories of the sims 1 than the technically more accurate version you did. this was such a fun exploration, i'm excited to see what else you'll try out!
I have the same feelings you have, but towards the Sim 1 console version. It's like so much appreciation, love, nostalgia for this game, I was like 13 or 14 years old, and could play for endless hours.
Great video! Loved the breakdown of the game's aesthetic and then rebuilding it, and the ray-traced segment was a very fun addition I've never played the Sims 1, but I already adore the vibe from what I saw in this video. The camera perspective and general appearance of the interiors actually reminds me of a game I love dearly, Revelations: Persona. A key difference is it doesn't use 3D character models at all, but instead 2D sprites for the characters - however, the game's art direction looks to be inspired by the experimental and surreal computer 3D art that was being made at the time, so all the sprites have this presumably intentional stiffness and glossy sheen to them, and unlike many pixel art RPGs which use a more cutesy/chibi art style, the proportions are largely realistic and the faces are more or less entirely blurred out, resulting in an eerie and dreamlike vibe. Combined with how all the event rooms are these isometric cutout dioramas floating in colorful voids and the very starkly shaded 'orbs' in the game's menus, I'm fully convinced they were trying to hit that 'weird 3D CGI' feel. The music and sound design for the game is also genuinely incredible and it all comes together to create a feel unlike anything I've seen elsewhere. A bit off topic, but I figured since we're on the topic of video game vibes, someone might get a kick outta reading this.
All I wanted was a nice background video whilst I was doing something else important, background sound, but no... I watched every second so intently I could have had my kitchen sink burgled and I wouldn't have noticed. Really enjoyed this, thank you - subscribed for the next time.
That Sims 1 music man. I feel like I get transported somewhere when the build mode music starts. I guess it was just all the different environments in which you heard the songs, like building on a rainy vacation day. Playing on a chill Sunday afternoon or at a friend's house. The feelings get attached to the music. It's crazy.
Sims 1 is a game I hold so dear to my heart and you've done such a great job of breaking it down. As a 3D animator I appreciate the perspective of someone who clearly understands more of the technical art side of it! I think one of the details that really adds to the uncanny/creepy vibe is the static faces. In 2-4, the faces are just as exaggerated as the bodies, but in 1 they will have the exact same face for chatting with friends as they do being burned to death. Mixed with the odd, shouty dialogue that I think is quite unique to TS1, I remember as a kid being really weirded out when they would start arguing (and then someone running off and scream-crying) all with this flat, neutral face with eyes that don't blink and a mouth that cannot open. Sims in 2-4 feel like cartoons, but in 1 they feel like marionette puppets, so I'm not surprised that it triggers that kind of strange discomfort in people.
Super Nice vídeo! Really reminds me of simpler times. I still play sims 3 these days because open world is a game changer for me. Tried to play sims 1 again but.. yeah, gameplay and graphics are really outdated of course. But it was fun in the beginning of 2000s
Thank you!! I loved the open world concept of the sims 3, but when I went back to play it as I was making this video I found it ran horribly on my PC - like so choppy I could barely get a smooth screen capture. Did you have to mod it at all to get it to run more smoothly?
@@chomehearts there's a mod called smooth patch that helps it run smoothly on windows. but lately I've been playing on my Mac, so its the native 64-bit version, and it is almost lag-free
@@chomeheartshey, yes I can't remember but there's a whole guide for running it on modern computers, and it can run pretty well actually. It is a mod or 3, and some editing of config files. Quite doable.
I usually don't comment on stuff but this video is so awesome! The amount of work that was put into this video really shows. I never played sims 1 but the art style makes me nostalgic for an old flash game I spent hours playing. There's something very charming about that overly shiny 2d art style. I clicked on this video on a whim and I'm so glad I did because it's really well made and entertaining, keep it up man!
Such a great video. Well done. Such a nice idea, well achieved. Very nostalgic. Totally! It was almost like ASMR 😂
hahah thank you! I I promise the sound quality will be better next time.
I loved how it looked with all the final effects!!! thank you for taking the time, It was almost like a dream come true watching a small remastered version of the iconic and hilarious The Sims 1
Thanks for watching!! I'm so glad you liked it!
The original sims is so full of personality, and you nailed it!
Aw thank you so much!
Great video! And that modern Sims 1 render was gorgeous. I definitely would pay for a remastered Sims 1 if it looked like THAT!
Haha thank you so much! Maybe EA needs to make that happen for us 🤔
This needs to happen! Shut up and take my money 💰
I wish they would just remaster 1-3. It would look so good!
@@chomehearts there is sort of a remake for ts1 - Simitone.
It's made by the people behind FreeSO, a reimplementation of The Sims Online for more modern PCs. They have a Hybrid 3D mode as well!
lol that animation was awesome HAHAHA i loved how the thief put out the fire and than still stoled smt XD
@@AndroChimera hahaha the janky AI in that first game always killed me - the sims were always doing things that made no sense so I’m glad you noticed that aha

It's great how it was the sink too, who needs water for the next fire anyways

Wow, that sounds fascinating! I would be so interested to learn or hear more! Side note, the comment thread that resulted from this is so nice and wholesome haha, I love it 🙏
Thank you so much for your explanation of the graphic’s goofiness ! I love it so much, but I was never able to understand what exactly happening here. It is always such a cool feeling then a specialist breaks down the picture for you, and you immediately realize that you have seen all these things already, but didn’t catch them consciously enough to know you look at them.
@@taismoke wow this makes me so happy haha, thank you for your comment! I think it’s so interesting how our brains just instinctually think “okay, there’s something funny going on here” even though it’s not super obvious how or even why it’s weird. Then everything kind of clicks into place once you figure out the mechanisms behind what’s happening aha
Sims 1 & 2 are "haunted" in the best way. Feels like it's alive, reacting to my choices & surprising me with chaos or looking straight at me. This is the first video of yours I've seen. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING IN SO MUCH INSANE EFFORT! You totally ROCKED this! Sul Sul!
Haha Sul Sul! Thank you for watching! This is my second video ever, and I knew I had to tackle TS1 because the vibe really is so distinct and "haunted".
Idk what the algorithm is doing lately, but again, I've been blessed with a small creator with an awesome video!
Aw thank you so much! I seem to have been blessed lately too haha - I had less than 100 subscribers yesterday and came home from work today to over 1k 🥹 A bit overwhelming haha, but I'm super thankful that so many people have enjoyed the video.
@chomehearts well, all 1k plus of us all look forward to the next video!
UA-cam is doing something good for a while.
the final video makes me realize how much i want a the sims 1 remastered! there were two video games that influenced me a lot, the sims 1 and diablo 2, blizzard already remade diablo 2, let’s hope ea would remake the sims 1, since they already cancelled (or paused) the sims 5
I was so invested in you exploring the ideas about the unique feeling of sims 1 that I completely forgot this video was about ray tracing until it got to that part.
Dude please yap more about games like this, i haven't been so invested in a video in so long.
Hey man, you popped up in my recommended. It's was great to come across this video, nice idea for a series, the "recreation," section after dissecting is kind of motivating.
@@Elliotbullet hey thanks so much for watching - so happy you enjoyed it!! Super stoked to hear you found it motivating haha - do you do any kind of art or design yourself?
2 things.
1: the object sprites consist of two images, the second is a grayscale image determining the depth of each pixel. This depth map is the reason that objects able to clip with sims and each other despite being 2d. This was also used by the OpenSims Online team as a basis for turning the objects into true 3d models
What's the second one?
@@JamSparing The second one is the grayscale depth map; the first one is the colored 2D sprite that you actually see.
You said you had two things but then you only said one thing.
@@hantzbro Oh, I get this. I meant uh, they said there were two things, but only listed one.
@@JamSparing I wonder, too

seriously though this video has inspired me to learn more about blender (i can only really use it to make sims 4 posepacks for taking in-game photography right now)
there's just so many options in there that it's kind of overwhelming
It's so good! And honestly I could totally see that happening in OG Sims too 😂
And then the sim stands in front of the oven like nothing happened.
What do you do there to keep your interest?
It really is such a classic! I still feel like TS1 is like the "purest" Sims game in that the core gameplay feels so tight and refined. Thank you so much for watching!
Sims 1 is like robots imitating humans, and designed to look more like a doll house simulation. The other Sims games are intended to be cartoony wacky life simulators
boy do I love fresh niche concepts applied to my favorite game
Haha thank you for watching!!
This video was incredible and I was shocked when I noticed you're a new channel! Please, keep making more videos!
@@bletila aw thank you so much for the kind words! There will definitely be more to come 🙏🏼

Thank you so much! I'm working on the next video now!
2:50 is this rage bait bc it’s the sims 4 😭
otherwise I’m finding it interesting!
Dude literally out here claiming the Sims 2 and The Sims Bustin' Out feel like The Sims 3 and 4... Me thinks he never played them... Because they are not tonally consistant at alllll. They aren't even cartoony in the same way.
Nothing like a burglar who casually walks in, panics along with you, help you extinguish the fire, then still robs you and causally walk away.
Hahah someone else said that was the most Sims-like part of the animation and I might have to agree.
That's two good videos out of two.
Eagerly waiting for the rest of the series.
Haha thank you so much for watching both of my videos! I hope my next video lives up to the hype 😬
Almost 1k now!
I love the way you talk and the editing on this video! I'm glad to have stumbled onto your channel.
awesome! i have an animation degree but no longer work in the field, so it felt great to turn my animation brain back on and analyze a classic game from my childhood alongside you. i'm looking forward to your next video!
Ohh no way! That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you so much for sharing; I hope you're still able to find time to use your animation skills even though you no longer work in the field. Even though I don't have a formal education in design or animation, it's been such a great creative outlet for me that I'm so thankful for.
Oh god RTX sims 1 looks like a mobile game ad. Suddenly they make a lot more sense now.
I was not expecting The Sims 1 with ray tracing to look so charming. Suddenly I want a game like this.
the amount of work that goes into this kind of video can not be understated- this was SO good. i was an avid sims 1 player growing up and still visit the sims 4 semi-frequently, so to see it picked apart with care and appreciate means everything. also would 10/10 play a raytraced version of sims 1, the lighting and shadows somehow made a jarring game even weirder. didn’t know that was possible 😂
keep up the good work, excited to see more of your work! have a fun and safe trip in korea! 🤩
Haha thank you so much! The videos are a lot of work for sure, but the process is so fun that I don't even mind! I'm so happy you liked the video - I'm working on the concept for the new one right now!

@@ivan23southeast hahahah okay now this is interesting. How did you start associating that smell with The Sims? 😂😂
This looks so awesome!! great video also, engaging yet still nice and chill :)
The finished product kind of reminds me of the Link's Awakening Remake/Echoes of Wisdom. The realistic lighting and simple models makes it look like you're playing with a diorama or toys in a doll house. Very cool effect.

@chomehearts thank you! 😂 I make Sims 1 content as well and I've always resonated with rosebud cause my name is rose 😊
The way you talk about this is so satisfying. Like I wanna chill with this guy and just chat it up about different topics 😫
Great video! Loved the breakdown of the game's aesthetic and then rebuilding it, and the ray-traced segment was a very fun addition
I've never played the Sims 1, but I already adore the vibe from what I saw in this video.
This is such a cool idea! Really original, and it's clear you're very knowledgeable about your craft. Subscribed! :)
Absolutely amazing work! Really enjoyed this
Brilliant result! Thank you for reawakening my nostalgia! Of course I'm subscribing to see what you've got next in store! :)
Great video! Always loved the feeling Sims 1 gave me, thanks for the work you put into this!
A lot of video games I used to play in the 90s had an unintentionally creepy, sometimes melancholic vibe, but I liked it, and kept coming back for more. The video did take a lot of work, and I for one appreciate it. I look forward to more to come when you can make them.

You know, I really understand what you say about the vibe. Nothing compares to that feeling when I was a kid playing in sims at night, the dark vibe.. also I guess there’s something about only being able to see your lot. Is like being home alone.
But on the other side, I would love to see the exactly game but in 3D, don’t actually know how but I always imagine it. Like someday with some new game pack I would be able to see every space I couldn’t because of the camera.
