- During my first amateur radio livestream on Twitch, I contacted some far-away stations including JG1OUT in Japan, from my little low-power mobile station in Belfast, Northern Ireland!

Loved your excitement at getting the contact. I think my heart rate went up as well. Keep on streaming. 73, NK7DKE from Phoenix AZ USA
I was pumped - thank you!
Nice catch! Well done. 👍🏻 congrats and 73
Thank you!
If we get a good sunspot cycle this will become commonplace. Years ago (early 1970's,) I was running a modified SSB CB on 10 meters in my car with about 18W PEP, and I was talking all over the world day and night to other mobile stations from my car in Colorado, USA. GB, Italy, Australia, NZ, Germany, Pacific islands, South America, Central America, Korea, Japan, Canadian weather stations in the Arctic, freight airplanes over Alaska... It was nuts, and wonderful, and it went on for months and months. Australia came in so well every evening that I started regularly checking in to an HF net down there.
11 years before that on my shortwave radio at home in MI I even heard a ham in Germany on 20 meters who was using a 2 transistor (transistors were just starting to be experimented with by hams,) AM transmitter running 20 milliwatts. I could hear him booming in on my old Hallicrafters from anywhere in my house! No headphones required.
I do hope the sunspot cycle continues to pick up to the level it was at when I was a kid because now I'm an Amateur Extra with all-band, all-mode capabilities and I'm probably too old to make it another 11 years to the next cycle. But that's what you have to look forward to during good future sunspot maximas.
I've been licenced since 2008 but have mostly been unable to operate during the maximum so I'm super looking forward to this one!
It's so cool when you just turn on the rig and hear loud and clear people in some town obviously just chit-chatting back and forth about the weather, but they have Australian accents, so you just toss out your call and join the conversation from halfway around the world. No big beams and kilowatts needed.
I love that feeling when you make a good contact. It never goes away after 30 years of ham radio. 73,s
Good job. Loved your excitement when he came back to your call.
Reminds me of my first QSO over 52 years ago...same excitement and it hasn't lessened in all those years. Good DX1 73 - Dino KLØS
This is awesome.
Thank you!
Excellent contact! I've subscribed as well 😀
I love that shuffle of joy when you hear your call repeated! I do that every single time. I love it! 😊
73,
John 2E0SVB
Ellen - I had to laugh when I could see your "outburst of enthusiasm" when the Japanese station had responded to your call! This is exactly what I miss with many radio operators - this "being there with the heart" - that you can literally see the enthusiasm and love for the hobby! Very nicely done - great video - very nice QSO with the low power and just one mobile antenna - it's just so nice that I had to watch it several times! Have fun with the common hobby, still such beautiful DX. 73 Mike from Germany.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment - it's so much fun! I'm lucky that every time I've went out recently contacts from all around the world come in - saltwater is such a blessing. I'm certainly enjoying myself, hope you are too!
Brilliant contact Ellen and that’s a cool set up you’ve got in your mobile 73
Thank you!
Brilliant contact! The magic of radio :D
i don't fully understand how this works but it's so cool!!
I'm using a radio transmitter to talk to someone in Japan, using just the atmosphere to bounce our signals across the world to each other!
CONGRATS! I made a Japan contact mobile once traveling through W. Virginia, and I was excited as well...
that's a lot more impressive to be fair - I'm right by the saltwater here!
I know how you feel at the excitement when you got through, its a great feeling , LOVED this video well done awsome..
wow this makes me want to get back into radio. your setup is really cool
Loved that excitement.. Great contact...
I am Prabath, 4S6RSP. Currently I am at your Land NI Belfast / Armagh . I will be here for a 1 or more years.

I know the feeling, it's exciting when you get that station you really hoping for :)
I love your reaction. Fantastic contact! God Bless and all the best 73 from KC2NGH
Well done ! Keep up the great work !
Nice work! I looked pretty similar a few months ago making my first JA voice contact on 10 watts
Oh my gosh, I’m excited. And I’ve
I know that feeling, congrats.
That is one incredible contact from the mobile. Well done! 73'
Thanks!
Amateur Radio at its best. Congrats Ellen! Great contact. 73 de Kevin, VK4KK
Thank you!
So glad you shared this. I was almost jumping when you completed the contact. Exciting stuff!
I got the bug as a kid and don't think I'll ever shake it now
Well done Ellen..impressive contact 30w 10/10
Excellent. That would be a dream catch for me, you must be so please. Nice
I was over the moon! Now I've got my mobile setup finalised, contacts into Japan happen most days now!
Congrats on the great contact. I love the little table you use. I haven't done mobile yet because I haven't figured out how to keep everything organized. That's a great system. 73 de K0BKO
Thank you! Yeah, it's just a little folding bamboo bed table but it works perfect for this too! Just keep it in the boot until I need it. Keeping the radio from killing you in a crash is the bit that took the most thought, of course!
Well done great for 30 watts. Proud of you
You have a perfectly modulated voice and it sounds like you have an excellent microphone too. Great job 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿💯💯💯
Thank you so much!
Well done!
Congrats! I've once made a QSO with Japan, from home, on 20W, AMPRO-40 (2.5m) antenna. I was so happy! But then someone told me that some of those stations use websdrs to listen for weaker dx stations (like mine) to make sort of a fake QSO. 73!
Haha, the excitement is epic... I totally know the feeling :) just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. Happy operating from 2E0VMI
Thank you!
Looks like a IC-7100, yes? I have the same radio and use a Shark hamstick on my Jeep. Amazing how well they work. Hope to hear you on the radio. 👍
it is indeed! Same antenna here as well!
THANK YOU, NICE WORK.. DES IN BELFAST,, IRELAND
Just like me. The excitement when my call is heard. :)
It's so much fun!
@@ellenfromnowon Yes it sure is.
Congratulations on that contact...propagation gods were on your side that night. Loved the excitement, most people just don't understand..keep up the good work and hope to work you somewhere down the log. 73 de KC3FOI from Philadelphia Pa USA.
Hi Ellen, nice QSO! Best DX, 73 from PY2TI.
Well done Ellen! Congrats 73 de La1msa
Thanks Sven!
Yeah, this is why I'm studying for FL right now. Awesome.
Good luck!
That's the craic! Very good long QSO! I've had 3 QSOs with Japan from grid FN25 in Ontario, between 80-100W SSB. Every time it was a surprise and a total thrill. I'm always amazed by how imbalanced each station can be, 30W v 1kW, simple antenna v 5el Yagi. I guess the super station helps the link budget both ways. Fantastic, the magic of radio.
Great to see you happy Ellen😊 Great QSO👌💪 congratulations🙂 See you on the bands, Frank SP4TT.
Thank you!
Mac! Just got a QSL card from him👍 good contact
That as amazing!
Thank you!
Brilliant 👏 contact well done. Hope to catch you on the band's. Best 73s and 88s.
De Ben 2E0TKK
Congrats. I remember my first QSO with Japan - I had the same excitement. I went screaming from the ham shack out to the living room, where my girls were sitting. Their comment was - 'Check Dad out - he's 'Fan Girling...' Even more impressive with you being on a mobile rig with a compromised antenna. Nice work! DE K7RLN
It's so exciting when it happens, isn't it? I can't operate HF from home due to being in a ground floor apartment so I love when magic like this happens mobile.
WTG Congratulations 👏👏👏👍👍👍👍WTG
Thank you!
Nice mobile contact, best 73
Makes me wanna try mobile after I get another hf rig and good mobile antenna. I was for 13 yrs on home QTH. Yaesu 840 and a wire. Made alot of European contacts. Good job 73 from East Tennessee in the USA. This month makes 30 yrs licensed. Tim N4TCM
Nice QSO, congrats! `73 de HA5MI

Bravo for you. Ellen , wish to met you also on the band de yg9rga
Good job I'm an avid qrper I have worked alot of the orient with just 5 watts and a E.F.H.W.antenna up about 30 feet . Is this not the best hobby ever? I've been running qrp since 1978 and started out with a Heathkit HW8 which I still have and it is only 2watts cw.73 from ki0ad/Jim😮😊
congratulations fantastic DX good job 73 from kb2uew

Very impressive!

I'm happy to make contacts from an apartment/flat from Akron, Ohio USA, 2nd floor with an antenna mounted on the balcony railing - happy if I make it "across the pond" as they say!
If it works it works! Yeah, the saltwater helps so, so much for stuff like this. Taking advantage of living on a small island!

What kind of antenna are you using for mobile?
AMPRO-20 mobile whip!
Fantastic! The excitement of making those long DX Contacts never gets old. Would love to see the box too. 73, Mike K8MRD.
I'll have a short video about it later today on the channel!
Good DX
Thank you!
ahahaha !!! I have the same reaction when I am able to establish contact through a huge pilup !!! it is tough to get through with 100W and a station antenna, you did really well with 30W and a mobile ham stick !!! 73/88 de VA2CST
Very nice contact on 20m mobile. Respect, I subscribe to your channel and wish you every success and good band conditions for your next DX QSOs, let's be part of it on UA-cam. 73s

Nice contact. Congrats. 73 AE0IY Minneapolis, MN. USA
What frequency are you using please. De g0sgo
Apparently, she doesn’t respond to her followers. Turning to her QRZ page, probably 20 meters. She does some 17 work too.
Agreed, the information would be useful. 73
I do reply I'm just busy! I was on 20 metres that day, yep, I think close to 14200.
Well done on the contact to JA, i've subscribed de Ei2iP robbie
Nice contact. KO4HPC Tennessee U.S.A. 73
