Been looking at concept tanks since the 80's. Yet 40 years later...There are still the same tanks around today, slightly updated. We have plateau'd Militarily. Very few systems today move dial, because of expense and complexity. The Cold War was tense, but it accelerated technology. Tanks will not disappear as long as our enemies use them.

Well, the design will not change for reasons of - practicality. For example, 4 tracks... Why? I mean, it looks cool, especially in the video game Halo, but seriously... More things that can go wrong, more tracks to be torn (and repaired) and does it really increase the mobility or has any real purpose? Apart from making it more complex, expensive and maybe cause more reliability issues... Why?
The basic design is working just fine, so nobody will change it.

    • @mwnciboo

@@karlovicinquisition3659 4 Unlikely replacements...Look at the M4 rifle, XM8 etc. It will not happen. Look at the T14 Armata, production cancelled. Abrams will be refined further, possibly (contraversially) getting a big Diesel like the MTU or a yank version.

@@karlovicinquisition3659 Thing is, two of those declassified examples look unworkable and go with the inferior 'internal crew' option.
And I think we can expect that they wont be chosen, considering they were declassified.
The one that wasnt declassified was blurred but it looked like a traditional layout tank and looked like a significantly updated Abrams in look and design.

Well hello there, I'm actually the artist behind the MBT-2020 design featured at the start of the video! Very flattered to see my work featured on this channel, as I've enjoyed your videos in the past while searching UA-cam for tank related content. Your appraisal of the tank was very accurate, and I'm glad you were able to pick out those features, since I tried to be realistic with my design when I created the vehicle (even if in retrospect some of them may not be ideal, such as the gun mantlet ERA patch you pointed out.) If anyone is interested in seeing more details on the vehicle, I have a post on ArtStation (my URL there is /douglask) with more renders of the tank and things like a blueprint view and even rough internal diagram.
I'm also currently in the later stages of working on a new tank design based on everything I've learned since designing the MBT-2020, so hopefully in the future if you do another futuristic vehicle roundup I'll have a more robust offering to contribute!
Also, as a side note on the video, I believe the tank you looked at with the huge gun and coaxial 40mm was actually a fictional render based on the Swedish Strv. 2000 concept, which was supposed to have a massive 140mm main cannon and a coaxial 40mm Bofors gun with 3 crew, but was sadly killed off in favor of adopting imported Leopard 2s.

Matsimus the one you called was going in to the realm of artillery(16:52).Is the Swedish army tank project Strv 2000. A tank with a 140mm main gun, secondary 40mm bofors and a auxiliary 7,62mm mg.

    • @OberonTitanicusRex
      @OberonTitanicusRex 3 роки тому +7

Yes I recognised it too. It's from back when the Swedish army was fazing out the S-tank for something a bit more modern, and were considering another domestically produced replacement. The 140 mm gun was an attempt to future proof the tank and make sure it had enough firepower to make any new vehicles it might come up against in the foreseeable future go away.
Problem with that kind of calibre: slow reload and reduced ammo capacity.
Proposed solution: cram a 40mm bofors in there to service any target that isn't an MBT or equally hardened, saving the big booms for those.
This wasn't the only proposal, but even so it was deemed expensive, technically questionable and basically 'Awesome but Unpractical'. It never went beyond a wooden mock-up.
The Swedish army decided, probably wisely, to go with the Leopard 2 instead.

    • @carso1500
      @carso1500 3 роки тому +5

Thats mostly because they always create something that allows the tank to survive a little bit longer, when HEAT rounds where created reactive armor was invented, when guns became too powerful composite armor was created, when anti tank missiles became wide spread active protection systems where developed
Also that doesnt disapears things like combined arms and just intel which allows the tank to not be in danger because it doesnt get in danger to begin with

    • @MazdaRX7007

Tanks will stay, but they won't be the spearhead of a military anymore (like in ww2 russia vs germany), the spearhead now is the airforce, transported by the navy. Tanks now are used to hold ground, so they're basically armored infantry and help with policing.

The tank at 16:42 is in fact the Swedish concept tank STRIDSVAGN 2000 (T140/40) from 1985 (www.ointres.se/strv_2000.htm).
    Weapons:
The main gun had a caliber of 140mm. Because the big caliber on the main gun, the tank could only carry 29 grenades. To solve that problem the solution was to mount a Bofors 40mm automatic cannon for AA purposes and for engaging soft targets etc, the tank could carry 148 40mm grenades.
The tank had also two 7,62mm MG.
    3 man crew.
Engine: 12 cyl (MTU 883) with a power of 1100kW.
Wight combat loaded: 59,8 ton (metric)
Front armore: 800/1200mm (shape charges/ kenetic energies projectiles.
Instead of the StrV 2000, Sweden desided to by a tank from the market becouse it would be a faster solution. The Swedish army neded to upgrade the tank fleet fast becouse of the threat from Soviet.
Sweden decided to by Leopard 2 (SWE uppgraded) and the StrV 2000 project was abandoned.
    Take care // SWE

The M16A5 Main Battle Tank or more commonly known as the Type-61, is the Earth Federation's main mass production ground combat vehicle during the One Year War before the introduction of the Mobile Suits. It is a relatively conventional looking vehicle with a crew of two; a driver and a commander (which also doubles as the gunner), its main armament consists of two 155mm Smoothbore cannons capable of firing both cannons individually or at the same time, and various different kinds of ammunitions ranging from APFSDS or Flashbang shells. The only known defensive equipment they mount are two smoke dischargers with eight tubes each, which can launch smoke grenades to conceal the tank against enemy fire momentarily. These smoke dischargers were also used for communicating with other units when Mobile Suits came out and made electronics largely unusable with Minovsky Particles. They served since before the One Year War and at least until the end of said war, with their replacement being mostly due to their unability to match the machines of the Federation's rivals that created Minovsky Particles.

The leopard 2 A5 (and above) dosn't have a shot trap. It might look like it, but the turret is actually very similar to the A4s and below. They added a little bit of armor, but that acts as spaced armor and will let a sabot through. That should break up in there, so that the main hull isn't breached. It would be a shot trap if it was solid, because then it probably would deflect the round, but as it is it gets penetrated but breaks up the sabot in the process (at least it should...).
That thing at 17:00 might actually be a tankdestroyer, because then you would want a 40mm Bofors if you met light vehicles, and a heavy long gun for killing tanks. At least some of the german TDs in ww2 had a barrel holder.
The tank at 28:00 looks like an updated version of the LVT (A)-1 or (A)-4

I can see the influence of the scorpion tank from halo and the mammoth tank for C&C in a lot of these designs. It kinda makes me appreciate the tank designs in 40K a bit more in that they are just pretty standard normal tank design as as you point out you don't need to go super complicated with the design, as what works now will work just as well but be better with new materials we are sure to discover/design.

With regards to "shot traps" of the leo 2... That really depends against what round. Against traditional APHE, it might well act like a shot trap, however against modern APFSDS or HEAT rounds it is not.
In order for it to be a shot trap it needs to be able to deflect the round... In the case of these angled wedges, it is not. An APFSDS (or even APDS) round would pass right through, but the long rod is destabilized by the spaced layer so it hits at an angle to it's velocity vector, this creates a shearing force upon impact which breaks up the rod. It's not designed to "bounce" the round away (and into a vulnerable part like the hull roof).

the first double tracked one, I think the barrel shroud is a magnetic assist for the gun. The shell still fires like normal, but while it is traveling down the barrel, powerful magnets pull/push it along, to accelerate it even more.
Think halfway between railgun and traditional gun.

I can see a potential future where a split track design would be useful, where each of the four (or more) track sections can independently raise and lower, pivot, and articulate, and where the tracks are driven by direct electric motor instead of mechanical power. However, in any kind of modern or near-future application, such a massive tank with such complexities would be incredibly expensive and have so many more potential points of failure and vulnerability. Definitely not "never worth it," but certainly "not worth it under any foreseeable conditions." And no, even if it was developed, I would not want to be a mechanic on it. That'd be a situation where there would have to be immense semi-intelligent automation involved, where a team of drones/robots/droids would handle the maintenance.

    • @jasonyesmarc309

So I'm actually creating a science fiction story around this idea. Basically, if you are able to develop an armor that is extremely heavy, but also effective beyond your wildest dreams, and need something to slowly roll in like an anti-tank unit's worst nightmare, then this massive land-dreadnaught style of tank would do it. With independent tread sections, it's able to rotate its forward-facing armor surfaces around so when one side finally gets worn down, it simply switches it out for a fresh side.
Then to capitalize on this insane amount of armor, engineers put two turrets (cannon and CWIS) and a mobile barracks on it. Now you have this ultra-armored vehicle that doesn't require speed and cover like a tank does, and is designed to basically clear a foothold inside of enemy strongholds to facilitate infantry support. The main downside is the enemy knows you're coming, but the idea is to be so heavily armored that this doesn't matter anymore. If anything, deploying this would cause a huge disruption in enemy logistics as it tries to counter this vehicle, creating holes elsewhere to be exploited by something faster like a land drone or traditional tank.

I would as a guess say you've never hear of the Bolo Tanks. Think of a self-aware moving mountain of weapons. It fights starships in orbit and enemy tank as well as troops on the ground. Sounds rather nasty with just those ideas. But wait! It gets better! The main gun uses a nuclear element called Americium. It is compressed by magnetic fields till if fission and is then fired out the barrel. As you can guess it's a rather dirty weapon. Now according to the ORIGINAL author this slug was traveling at a good fraction of the speed of light. So when it hit it's target it tender to either go bang in a big way or punch through forcefields and then the hull of the starship or enemy tank. Reading how other authors powered them as well as armed them in mind-blowing as everyone did it his/her own way. But only the early versions were crewed by man. All the later Marks were Self-aware AIs. So far the most advanced is something like a Mk XXXXll. And that you'd have to read to believe! I believe it only appeared in one story many, many yrs ago. The funniest thing is they were built in Detroit Mi. to start with. BTW, the Roman numerals are how the Mks are designated.

17:04 Matt, this tank was actually real (albeit as a mock up). And it wasn't a self-propelled howitzer, it was meant to be the Swedes' next generation MBT (but they were too poor so they instead decided to buy STRV 122s)
    It's called the STRV 2000.
Anyways, just as a side note, you notice how the turret is too flat (like as if it only provides 0 degrees of gun depression), to provide decent gun depression angles??? Well it actually has 15 DEGREES OF FRIGGIN GUN DEPRESSION!!!!!! (or maybe more, I don't fully remember). How the hell did they do this??? Well, they achieved it by using a cleft turret design.
Some examples of cleft turrets (for your viewing pleasure):
    1) wiki.wargaming.net/en/File:Rheinmetall_tank_2.png (Rheinmetall Panzerwagen)

Commenting as I go through - some meant in good humour :-)
Tank No.1 MBT-2020 looks like a beefed up T-90MS/AM with Armata crew config. Love it.
Tank No.2 - plausible and interesting
Tank No.3 would be massive - heavy and a headache for maintenance
Tank No.4 - the T-14/15 mix - Coud probably work, but not as a MBT. For that arrangement the engine would have to go to the front, centre for crew compartment read for turret mechanism and ammo storage. For a light tank/TD concept I could envisage it but I don't see its need at present other than to have a 'new tank'. Still lovely drawing
Tank No.5 - WHO SAT ON MY LEOPARD?!
Tank no.6 - should we nickname it the Toblerone for its Triangular design?
No7 Jagdleopard - looks COOL AF - but alas very dated; I doubt it would have a place today, where TD vehicles are lighter and faster on wheels or helis, and why would you not just, in peace time, use a normal Leopard? Yes in wartime cutting a turret saves money...
No.8 - not my style. Sorry - it looks cool in a star wars-y fantasy way. I feel it could only work as a light vehicle with q small gun, closer to 75mm
No9. With the Ukrainian trident - leaving aside that Ukrainian industry is in a horrible situation so unlikely to be able to build it, looks like a T-64 met a mix of Steam and Cyber punk.
No.10 - Abrams hull meets Leopard turret? Seems very flat - a relatively plausible design though.
11 - Merk Hull and M8AGS reminiscent turret but MAHOOSIVE gun
    12 - HALO vibe anyone?
13 - Löwe turret on a small like ELC-AMX Hull?
14 - cyberpunk feel to it
15 - KM vector thing - think it would work better with wheels and a smaller gun
16 - seems a more realistic double tracker one - still not sold on those.
17 - yeah beefed up Bradley
18 - Leopard 2 like Hull but Armata + Ariete baby turret. Again seems realistic
    19 - T-14 Bulldozer
20 - looksnlike one of those IDF modernisation of the M60 - Sabra? Oversized turret
    21 - wasn't that is a Warhammer game?
    22 - Merkava and bulldozer?
    23 - looks like a game's hover tank concept
    24 - new BMP-1?
    25 - Batman?
26 - I go lt nothing apart from Que?
27 - looks like something Korea or Japan would make lol
28 - Monstertrucks in the Military
29 - looks like it would be better as a Star Wars hover tank
30 - one of the early concepts for the Armata - love it - thecturret has borrowed the coaxial auto-cannon from q czech mod of the T-72
    31 - Abbot or M109 but angular
    32 - agreed M1 on a diet
33 - a smaller concept of the P.1500 Monster thing the Germans proposed in WWII?
