Consider making a cake with two yarns held together. when one yarn plays out, tie on another color leaving a 4" tail. Continue on until you have a full cake. When you begin to crochet this, leave the 4" tails hang out. It makes for a rustic looking blanket! Just say'n...💜
Actually this is a great idea for when you knit or crochet using 2 strands of yarn. Never thought of doing this before. I will have to try it when using mohair or surry.😊
Hi Juan! I love these videos where you hang out and chat. Watching you make scrap cakes gets me motivated to do something with my scrap yarn. Thanks for sharing all the things! 🥰🧶☕️
I love winding with Juan. It is so relaxing just to sit and listen to your soothing voice and watch you wind yarn. Thank you Juan for all your content. 💜
I ❤ this cake winding! So calming. I also have a knit pick winder and it's wonderful! I have the squeaking issue also and use the same table method as you. Great minds!
I have made MANY afghans with only variegated yarn, using 5 to 7 different variegated yarns. My "rule" is that one color carries through to the next colorway. Then, the next change has a matching colorway in a different color. I may not be describing it well. I absolutely love their unique look. Go for it, Juan!
I love it when you sit down and talk to us as you work!! While you wound cakes, I crocheted on the blanket I'm making my son!!! So anytime you want to get some work done (crochet, weaving in ends, caking yarn), always know we are right there listening as we work too!! 🧶❤ I love it and don't want the video to end! You are a lot of company for me and it's great!! See you next time👋
I started a scrap afghan for my oldest daughter to make her afghan special as it would have pieces from her siblings and children's afghans. Her daughter saw it and asked if I would make her a traveling afghan that was a lighter afghan than the one I made her. I started color coordinating and have bought " Roll my eyes" yarn 3 times. My youngest Grandaughter saw the afghans and asked if I would make her one. I said yes as soon as this ball was as big as a basketball... It is that big now!! Soon I'll start a true scrap afghan lol.! I can't color coordinate lol and buy yarn!
I have this same Knit Picks winder and it has never failed me. I think with my next scrap cakes I am going to crochet an emotional support chicken and do 10-15 turns per colorway. Always enjoy getting to watch and crochet while you chat! Happy crocheting! -Wil
I really enjoyed this caking session. I would have never thought about doing it, with the amount of yarn I have this is excellent idea !! Thanks Juan !!!!
I'm new here. I love making scrap cakes too. Actually, ikerp my yarn winder on a wood tv tray also. So much easier than putting ut away every time. It's so rewarding corralling all those small balls & putting them to use. Here's a tip I do now. I don't even tie the knot tight so I can untie it later if I want, because sometimes I like to group certain colors together.
I buy scrap yarn at the secondhand shop, and use whatever I have already and I made so many scrap cakes and now I am working several projects. I have one with just one strand and its amazing to see the difference working up. Second project I use two scrap cakes and a light yarn, three strands held together, and work up this amazing scrap blanket. It is absolutely worth doing, and I love "saving" yarn that someone had to give up. I mostly knit for charity, but the scrap blankets are the ones I keep. Because I am a rebel and mix all sorts of yarn, and it can be a challenge to keep clean if you don't wash it carefully.
It's soooo relaxing, working on a WIP, watching you wind scrap-cakes, and listening to your stories....you could literally read the phone book and I would find it entertaining ! Your voice and calming presence is very soothing .
I was at the fancy yarn store one day and saw an employee using a winding contraption--my first time seeing this done. She made the comment that hanks of yarn must be wound before they can be used. I’ve never bought a hank, so I didn’t know if what she said was true or not. Love this idea of making scrap cakes! Would you be able to show us a few projects you’ve made with them? Thanks so much….😊 ❤-Brenda
Yes, keep winding scrap crazy cakes! Love it all so much. It is so soothing, and takes me away from all the little and big difficulties that life throws. I want to make my own scrap cakes! Thanks, Juan… As Always!
I this is a great idea ! When I make a blanket with leftover yarn I usually just get all my leftover yarn and start crochet till each ball is gone - when I do cake a full skein of yarn when I’m finished with the cake, I hold the end with a Bobbie pin so it doesn’t unwind
Hi Juan, I just found you, now I am winding cakes with you!!!! LOL!! I showed this ball winder to my sister, and she just ordered one too and is now winding tons of old stash buster balls too!!! Lmao 🤣We can't get enough of this. We have both been crocheting for many years!! I am winding while I listen to your soothing happy voice and cute little snickers. Hope you have a great day and a happy spring!!!
I love scrappy yarn. I make cat blankets for the local animal shelter. No 2 blankets are the same, each is original art! Love your channel and your laugh.
I love these cake winding videos, I like to work on wips and listen/watch. I have plenty of small balls of yarns that i need to cake up together to make it easier to work with.
I agree there are not enough left handed crochet tutorials. My boys are in their 20s. I taught a crochet class to a group of 3rd graders boys and girls. I had 3 individuals whom were left-handed. I had to get creative as I couldn't find anything that had the basic crochet stitches with pictures back in early 2000. I took and photo copied a right handed set on mirror image to have pictures that went with stiches to the words. I had to cut and paste the left handed diagrams to the words in the picture on regular image as mirror image transposed the words too. Once I did that the ones whom werr left handed were able to make progress on the crochet project. I also challenged myself to do the same project as a left handed person as I crochet and knit right handed. Up until that point I didn't realize how few things were set up for people whom are left handed. It was definitely a learning curve and one I was happy I was able to teach myself to crochet left handed enabled me to help my left handed individuals be successful as they were mostly 8 and 9 year old students.
I had my Dunkin today. I had one of the new Dunkin, donut flavored, coffee flavors. It was an iced vanilla donut coffee, soooo good! You wind and I crochet, perfect combo with a chat on the side!!!
I used to make "magic balls" hand rolling them. I bought a winder and have gone bonkers making " crazy cakes" so much fun.C2c is my mindlesss relax favorite stitch.
I forgot to tell you how much I like the Dots crochet hooks. I wouldn't have known about them if not for you. It's not the length because my hand is small. The padding hits nicely and they are so smooth. I had never heard of them. I would recommend them, very satisfied!
Saying hello from Australia 🇦🇺 You inspired me to buy a yarn winder and turn my scrap bins into scrap cakes!!! I knit and crochet blankets for the house and for charity so this is a great way to keep yarn ready to go 😊 ❤ keep making your videos … love listening to your chats 😀
Hi, I like the idea of doing a scrappy moss lapghan. I'm interested is seeing scrappy Afghans done in different stitches. You are very friendly and have a calming present. Best to you and your mom! Can't wait till Sunday night see ya!!!!!
Thank you so much Juan. I never knew how to use one of those so I always stayed away from hanks for that reason. I might broaden my horizon now thanks to you :)
Really enjoy these videos, seeing all the yarns and colours you put together. I really appreciate the right handed videos you put out as still learning to crochet
I love these yarn winding episodes. I adore scrapghans and what I call magic balls. I have a yarn winder but had not used it because I had no table that it fit. I do have a wood TV tray that will work perfectly.😊 Thanks for the idea! ❤
This is a great idea … I buy the baskets with the handles from hobby lobby seasonal section or dollar tree I think has the larger ones so I can add a stitch counter on it
Hello Juan and Mom Wilma 💖💖🌞🌞. I L💖VE THIS! I missed this Video earlier & I am so happy that it just popped up on my Notifications 🌞💖🤗🤗🤗! I really need this one 💖🌞.
I have been making baby blankets for donation and working a major stash bust at the same time. So far, I've done 14 or 15 blankets without repeating myself. Some are C2C, some just large squares, some square motifs of some sort (Flowers, grannies, mini grannies...). Any tail end over 2 feet long goes into a ziploc for future use. I now have 2 largeish cakes of lots of colors. I'm planning a long cushion, possibly in trinity stitch, for my daughter's solid wood "deacons' bench" which she inherited from my mother.
So many of my makers are doing spring cleaning of WIP's, yarn rooms and scraps You all have really motivated me. I need to go through my WIP's do a sort, create some scrap cakes and get my area cleaned up. Thanks for the added inspiration.
Well this works out lovely. Get to have another wonderful hangout time with Juan. Was just working on a WIP when I got your notification. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend.😊🧶😊
I love using my scrap yarns running 2 or 3 together with a bigger hook and HDC stitch! These work up a fast Afghan and the colours are fun for young and old alike! I found watching you cake these up entertaining and relaxing! Can’t wait to see what you do with them!
Love that you use a TV dinner tray!!! I have the same winder with minimal places I can attach it!! Great idea for these scrap cakes. I so need to be more organized like you with my scrap yarn! 😂
Your way of making scrap cakes is similar to how I do it. I love this idea Ms c!! Huge hugs!!🥰 thank you!!🙏
That sounds amazing. I'm going to try it!
Actually this is a great idea for when you knit or crochet using 2 strands of yarn. Never thought of doing this before. I will have to try it when using mohair or surry.😊
Thanks, MsC. for the suggestion.. I will be trying it😊
I just ordered a ball winder with your link. Looks like such fun!
Starting your cakes with a slip knot is genius!!! I will be doing that from now on.
Don’t apologize I too coffee makes me happy 👍☕️
I will watch Juan do just about anything! His voice is so soothing!!❤
Hi Juan! I love these videos where you hang out and chat. Watching you make scrap cakes gets me motivated to do something with my scrap yarn. Thanks for sharing all the things! 🥰🧶☕️
Hello Juan. I did that yesterday. Much nicer than a bunch or partially used balls of yarn. Thank you for showing us how to do this.
Granny Square Peg has made some terrific blankets using many different variegated yarns. You might enjoy seeing her projects.
Finally, a great way to clean up my yarn mess and salvage the million leftover bits!💜❤️💜❤️
I love winding with Juan. It is so relaxing just to sit and listen to your soothing voice and watch you wind yarn. Thank you Juan for all your content. 💜

Watching you wind up cakes is so relaxing for me. Thanks for the free therapy 💕💕💕
I started thinking the same thing , lol . 😊
I’ve been winding my yarn for a while, but I’m ordering a larger winder to create bigger cakes. Will be posting soon.
You are inspiring me Juan. I’m going to experiment. Also you’re making me laugh a lot. Enjoyed “pink has a right to be in this cake”. Lol
YAY! Another hangout with Juan! I feel SO spoiled!❤❤
That slipknot in the cake is GENIUS! I wish I had thought of that
It is so crazy how much I enjoy watching you wind up cakes 💜💜💜
I love it when you sit down and talk to us as you work!! While you wound cakes, I crocheted on the blanket I'm making my son!!! I agree! It is different from the tutorials..those I need to focus on the instructions then; this feels more like we’re sitting around swapping ideas.

Yay, I got the chance to binge some Juan tapes today!!! And who knew winding yarn could be so entertaining...?! YAM xx
Juan I’ve been doing scrap yarn cakes over 10 years now I love them and I make all kinds of cute things
A scrap sweater💭
What a great idea! I’m going to wind mine today. I think I’ll make a blanket for my fur baby. He loves laying on the yarn that i leave on the sofa.
Nice session i enjoyed it
Love your cakes. You're making. I have never had a winder, It does look so fun. I might have to get me one of those. Thank you so much for sharing.

Making the loop at the start of winding is genius 😮
It's soooo relaxing, working on a WIP, watching you wind scrap-cakes, and listening to your stories....you could literally read the phone book and I would find it entertaining ! Your voice and calming presence is very soothing .
Yes l like it, l’m going to do it too thanks a lot hi to your mom Wilma she is very sweet take care ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Watching you wind up cakes while working on the triangle scarf... I'm so far behind schedule. Too many Wips not enough time 😅
I was at the fancy yarn store one day and saw an employee using a winding contraption--my first time seeing this done. She made the comment that hanks of yarn must be wound before they can be used. I’ve never bought a hank, so I didn’t know if what she said was true or not.

I love this, Juan! Not only waking up to a video from you, but I wondered how you made scrap cakes with the bigger balls. Now I want to try! Big hugs!
These scrap cakes would make a good granny square blanket
Yes, keep winding scrap crazy cakes! Love it all so much. It is so soothing, and takes me away from all the little and big difficulties that life throws.
I want to make my own scrap cakes!
Thanks, Juan… As Always!

Watching you wind yarn speaks to my yarn therapy! Don't stop, it is so enjoyable! 💜 Thank you!
I just balled up 4 cakes. So much fun. Can't wait to make a scrappy afghan.
What a great idea how to use up all my extra yard. I usually just let my chihuahuas play with the little balls. Thank you!😊
Now I know why your video was backward. That's so considerate. I was hooked on watching one of you tutorials even though I wasn't crocheting. ❤
I love scrappy yarn. I make cat blankets for the local animal shelter. No 2 blankets are the same, each is original art! Love your channel and your laugh.
Hi Juan , I love these videos and seeing how it all cakes up lol I never wanted a cake winder so much in my life lol ❤❤
Love caking yarn and chatting! Thanks
I love these cake winding videos, I like to work on wips and listen/watch. I have plenty of small balls of yarns that i need to cake up together to make it easier to work with.
Hey Juan 😄 I love hanging out with you with your wips and cakes while I work on projects 😊 thanks for crocheting with me today 😊
I need more caking sessions. I adore these types of videos so much! I’m always so intrigued to see what colors you mix and match with.

I used to make "magic balls" hand rolling them. I bought a winder and have gone bonkers making " crazy cakes" so much fun.C2c is my mindlesss relax favorite stitch.
I use my scrap cakes for scarves and hats for donation. They are so fun!
Absolutely love this idea juan. I often watch your videos and enjoy everyone. Keep cacking ❤👍

I didn’t know that thanks for doing that I appreciate am a right handed crocheter and taught my daughter who is a lefty blessing for caring 💯👍👏⭐️🙏🏿🧶🌹
Hi, I like the idea of doing a scrappy moss lapghan. I'm interested is seeing scrappy Afghans done in different stitches. You are very friendly and have a calming present. Best to you and your mom! Can't wait till Sunday night see ya!!!!!

Really enjoy these videos, seeing all the yarns and colours you put together. I really appreciate the right handed videos you put out as still learning to crochet
I buy the 3 large bags for 5 bucks at Cracker Barrel. they work perfectly for Afghans. Holds the yarn and the afghan!!

I love these videos they are so relaxing to watch. I enjoy hearing your stories about momma Wilma . 💜
I love these yarn winding episodes. I adore scrapghans and what I call magic balls. I have a yarn winder but had not used it because I had no table that it fit. I do have a wood TV tray that will work perfectly.😊 Thanks for the idea! ❤
Those cakes are absolute chaos, it hurts my OCD - but I think that was the point, lol!
This is a great idea … I buy the baskets with the handles from hobby lobby seasonal section or dollar tree I think has the larger ones so I can add a stitch counter on it

The most healthy cakes ever! ❤
I enjoyed another session with you caking up your yarn, as I crocheted my blanket 💜
watching you make cakes and bagging up your yarns, give a "look into" the types colors you have chosen👍 to use
I love Loops & Threads soft classic. The Loops & Threads winder, HATE it! The cakes you get on your Knit Picks are nice, neat & big!
I love your caking videos!! And your bright positive attitude is contagious!! I love it!😊
I love this idea! I don’t have scrap yarn yet, because I’m a beginner at crocheting, but now I know what I’ll do when I do have them ❤
Well this works out lovely. Get to have another wonderful hangout time with Juan. Was just working on a WIP when I got your notification. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend.😊🧶😊

Hey little brother, I enjoyed watching you Y
wind up cakes
Hey Sis!! Thank you!! 🙏
Now this Juan looks totally fun! And, worth some left over skeins of one or two of .😊
Such a great idea! Inspired me to deal with my scrap yarn! And coffee makes me happy too!❤
Great way to use up your scraps, thanks for spending time with us😊
Love that you use a TV dinner tray!!! I have the same winder with minimal places I can attach it!! Great idea for these scrap cakes. I so need to be more organized like you with my scrap yarn! 😂
They look so beautiful!! Love it! Thanks! ❤
I got myself some WIP baskets. It's a fantastic idea! I feel so much more organized now
Hey Juan ❤👋🏾 scrap cakes are a great idea for leftover yarn. They turned out really pretty 👍🏾
This is absolutely amazing! Thanks again, Juan!
Your way of making scrap cakes is similar to how I do it. I like to separate the larger scraps into several cakes so there’s more continuity in my scrappy projects..so I don’t have huge blocks of any certain yarn, but it’s spread out on the projects.. I hadn’t thought to count out a given number of turns per scrap. My main issue with making scrap cakes is I keep thinking how I COULD be using these scraps for hats, which is my other jam. That, and my unused full skeins are looking at me with reproach for focusing on scraps instead of them. But it’s fun, and satisfies my inner frugalista! 😂. For the record: I love the caking sessions. I glean ideas from you and the comments. Keep ‘em coming, please.
this is better than art therapy.
