Predator gave us all the greatest handshake in human history.

Sure, having Arnold go heads up against a Predator I can understand the appeal.
Now convincingly explain to me doing the same with Danny Glover...
A buddy of mine tried to talk me into getting the Predator novels because he said
they were pretty decent. I told him "I ain't got time to read." Good times...
I love intellectualism in my sf as much as the next person. But, occasionally, it
feels good to see some guy just punch an alien in the face. "Welcome to Earth!"
After twenty years of nothing but clandestine alien contact and "stealthy" invasion
movies coming out of Hollywood, I suspect this film benefitted a lot from Aliens
recalibrating the genre a year earlier.
And I would contend that Bloodsport is the film that actually brought Van Damme to
    international prominence, BTW.

Tiny little detail, but Jesse Ventura wasn't actually a Navy SEAL; he served on the Underwater Demolition Team, which was folded into the SEALs after his service ended.

Ooh, tough choice, but I’m going to vote for the Predator winning against the Alien. Solely because the Predators seem to have the advantage in intelligence and weaponry, while the Alien, although scary, seems more like an animal. It would definitely be a tough hunt for the Predator though. I also haven’t really seen the movies so I could be wrong.

    • @chuckpoore
      @chuckpoore 2 дні тому +2

This has always been my opinion. As vicious as the Alien is, it is basically just an animal driven by instinct. It has superior self-defense capabilities, but it lacks technology. Predator has the technology to track and ensnare an Alien, as well as weaponry. The Alien's weaponry is just it's mouth, tail and claws. Effective and devastating against an unarmed opponent. But against technology, it would put up a fight, but lose. I mean, even humans were able to defeat it with basic technology. Ripley defeated her Alien antagonists with a grappling gun, and some strategy, and then with a glorified forklift. Plus, they defeated the whole nest with a nuke. Sure, humans took a lot of casualties, but in the end, our ability to use intelligence, tech, superior weapons and some bravery and strategy to ultimately win. Predator would definitely win. Although I have always liked the tagline to AVP: Whoever wins--we lose!

I saw Predator in a movie theater back in the day. It's the kind of movie whose visual power can only be fully appreciated if you see it on a big screen. I also quite like Predator 2 and its concept of moving the action from an actual jungle to an urban jungle. Personally I'd love to see a Predator movie set on the home planet of the aliens in which the tables are turned on them and they become the prey (maybe as a kind of ultimate challenge for intergalactic hunters).
BTW: in Without Warning (1980) Kevin Peter Hall also played an alien who hunts humans.

Good one. That review was 'meaty' and very satisfying. I think enjoying Predator for entertainment value is a trait of a connoisseur these days. The zeitgeist has shifted so much since 1987 that today the action movie landscape has been supplanted throughout with easter eggs, allusions and moral asides and it doesn't seem like very many movies are made to tell a straightforward story about an interesting subject. I rewatched Fight Club recently and thought the irony of it's problematic treatment of social issues and self-serving ethics interestingly cancelled themselves out to leave you with a quirky, funny tale like the Rocky HOrror Picture Show. I'm not saying Alien Vs. Predator is great if you don't read too much into it....because it's a tedious drogue schlep of spectacles constantly pointing to it's forerunners. Just that Predator's flaws both technical and in it's social character don't matter that much, so the deeper context isn't that important...and there aren't many movies you can say that about.

We saw this in the cinema when it first came out. Oh dear, I did not enjoy this dollop of homoerotic, macho guff. My girlfriend fell asleep. I was not interested in the opening action scene. As soon as she woke up, we went to the pub. A few years later, a mate of mine gifted me the VHS release for Christmas.
Bloody hell! On second viewing, I found the film to be an entertaining romp. Tremendous fun and a grand example of B-Movie Sci-Fi done to perfection. To this day I skip the silly first part. And I damn-well love this classic piece of disposable entertainment.

I always loved ❤ Predator. Predator is an awesome and great sci-fi film with a stellar cast, I'm glad that I have this film on VHS Tape 📼, and Predator had brilliant action scenes with the Predator creature. Predator along with RoboCop and Full Metal Jacket are my top 3 absolute favorites of 1987.

Don't excommunicate me from your UA-cam site, but I have never watched Predator. In fact, I've never seen ANY of the Predator films? Why? Great question. I don't have any one reason why I've never watched Predator (and its sequels... and prequel), but I will eventually correct that "wrong". Really.

It's my opinion this film is a perfect example of its genre. At no point do the characters seem anything but credible humans in an incredible situation, constantly doing the right thing thwarted only by their not understanding the situation. In a minor point, the Mythbusters showed that the mud would only block thermal imaging for a short time ... which, oddly, doesn't affect the scene at all if we say assume Dutch only thinks he's invisible.
Minor personal note: based on a private conversation, the "Indian Guide" stereotype was alive and well in the US military well into the 1990s.

Perhaps what makes the movie work so well is the mixing of those troupes together. And yes the rollerball remake should be labeled a crime against humanity. By the way my son knows the get to the chopper line even though he hasn't seen the movie. It's great when you realize that movies can make it's way into pop culture.

One on one, advantage Predator. Weight of numbers, advantage Aliens. A short video about the movie at the time explained they imported the scorpion from Africa because the local ones weren't big enough. The self-destruct device seemed one of the rules of the game. Don't let the technology fall into the hands of the prey. That's one way for the hunter to become the hunted.

Sure it was macho… in the first half. Then the movie flips everything on its head and turns all those burly dudes into impotent little bitches. In the end it was Arnold’s smarts, not brawn, that won the day. John McTiernan was specifically critiquing the machismo stereotypes of 80s cinema.
