This is exactly what I was looking for!!! Especially when flying and landing helicopters it can be very hard to assess the hight of the helicopter... This simple tip solves the issue! Thank you!
I'm embarrassed to admit I spent a lot of time trying to reverse engineer decals. I even went as far as inventing my own version, which tanked. I just naturally assumed the professionals were using their own tools. What a great tool! Wonderful tutorial as always. TY
for anyone wondering about runway design: you can apply decals to draped polygons too. lay the polygon over your runway and you have a "stony" kind of surface. for decaling polygons you don't need the tool, simply add the decal file to your polygon (.pol) in its text editing format. So you have the texture info on first line and on next line the decal info.
Thanks for bringing us the topic if decals in our minds. Keep doing this great job for the community. I liked the simple idea of editing the .ter files, so I started some research on wirting batch files. My purpose was to edit all .ter files in the tiles folder of ortho4xp. I managed to wirte a batch but failed to run the batch on multiple directories in windows. But there is such a simple way: just use notepad++ as a text editor and use the search and replace function. You can do the replacement over a defined directory with all subfolders in it. So search "TERRAIN" and replace with "TERRAIN DECAL_LIB/....dcl" and use "*.ter" in the filter function to only search and replace in this files. My PC has done this job for about 100.000 files in 10minutes or so. If everybody has experience with changing the command "NO_SHADOW" to "SHADOW" in the .ter file please share. Thanks
Thanks for this vid - I have played with a similar tool, but this one is much better. I'm using the XP decal library files for scenery designs I am busy with, but sometimes I feel the decals just does not fit certain scenery. I wish I could realy understand the art side of creating my own decals.
Hi there, loving all your Xplane tutorials, keep up the fantastic work. I have a load of ortho4xp tiles (all of Europe) made about a year ago with v120b, but don't know how to transfer this into v130 without starting from scratch. Have you thought about a short step-by-step tutorial on how to update/migrate existing ortho to a new version of Ortho4XP (incl symlinks), it would be a life-saver here.
Thanks a lot! As v130 introduced many new features, unfortunately it isn't too easy to convert existing v120 tiles. Also I don't have v120 installed anymore, so I'm afraid there won't be a tutorial coming for that. I recreated all tiles when I switched to the new version, to get all the great features like sloped runways. It should be possible to reuse your downloaded photoreal textures though. Regards
@@reedchrisj Yes the overlays in the "All in one" step would be a help. But you can also either restart the program after the "All in one" so that all new tiles get marked on the map, or you can also do the complete proces via "batch build" by also checking the OSM, Mesh, Masks and Imagery steps. Cheers
Many thanks for the tutorial. However - applying this tool I don't see any difference. The "decal"-setting is listed in the *.ter-file but the grass looks the same as in the default tile made by Ortho4xp.
If I remember correctly this tool only adds some lines of text to already very small files (the ortho image files don't get altered), so the space increase is negligible.
Interesting thanks and also your PC specs and graphics setting. Also that you have XPlane on its own ssd, something I have thought of doing myself....as you can and it frees up space on the system drive.... Laurie
Yeah just recently I purchased a new SSD for XP11, before it was running on a normal HDD and the loading times and stutters were horrible. Definitely helped a lot.
Do you mean the possibility to do that process for several Ortho4XP tiles at once? Then unfortunately the answer is no, every tile has to be edited individually. Even though I think there is a Python script available somewhere, that allows you to do that. But I didn't try it out yet.
No I didn't try that out yet, but it may do pretty much the same thing, even though you don't have the choice which decal to use. But if the ApplyDecals app is crashing for you, maybe you should try out that option. Cheers
It doesnt crash in my situation, after selecting all the files the app seems to be calculating something during 1 or 2 minutes, just wait then you can click on "apply" and it takes less than 1 minute
Gern geschehen ;) Wie geht's effem?
Hey Simulation Channel Deluxe. I just saw that Ortho4XP 1.30 has a built in decal applier. Just click it on in your config and Ortho will automatically apply amazing decals to every tile your create. Try it out. 1.30 removes the extra step of applying decals with another software. Look at my pic here, imgur.com/gallery/qxf6vgj
Yes you're right, thanks for pointing that out and also for the pic provided. I've never seen that setting before lol. One advantage of the Apply Decals tool though is the possibility to select the type of decal to apply. Cheers
@@SimulationChannelDeluxe. The issue I have with apply decals, is that if I try to apply decals to a zl17 or 18 tile. I have to do it in multiple parts because the decals software crashed if you try more than 500 terr files at once
@@VacMaster1991 Oh okay, that's unfortunate. I think that I've had several tiles with more than 500 files, over 700 even iirc. But I think from now on I will also use the setting in O4XP as it saves some time :)

Great explanation and tutorial. Clear, well thought out, above and beyond.
Brilliant. Thanks mate. I'm going to do this to all my tiles now. Keep up the good work, love your channel

Does this app also work with some Orbx scenaries?
I don't own any ORBX scenery for X-Plane 11, so unfortunately I don't know.
Do decal'ed sceneries cost performance? Or are they "for free"
