When I was in Kindergarten at Stine School in the mid-60's, the bus drove up Stine Rd. then dropped me off from school right where the bridge crosses Stockdale Hwy! SH was a 2-lane road back then and didn't have finished sidewalks, etc. It was just dirt along the pavement. I walked into the neighborhood there on the north side of SH to my babysitter's house which now backs up to the new fwy. What changes! I grew up in Park Stockdale back when it was just being built. There was no California Ave. or New Stine Rd. back then. I walked out my back door to oil fields and cattle. It was our playground. Thanks for documenting this history in the making.
I love this story and appreciate you sharing. Very interesting to hear how much it has changed over such a "short" period of time. My family is also native to Bakersfield, my mother lived on Apache as a child in the 60s and early 70s, and my father grew up in that same neighborhood as your babysitter on the north side of Stockdale around the same time. My grandparents had the house on the SW corner of Ford and Candy. Stay tuned for the next update. Thanks, it's hard to find this information. But this was six months ago. It appears almost complete. When will it open? (You didn't show the actual connection to the Westside Parkway very clearly.)
So it appears people will no longer be able to exit Ming Avenue from Highway 58? In the past when Highway 58 westbound connected to Highway 99 southbound that first exit was Ming Avenue. Now the first exit will be White Lane?
You can also get on the 99N, exit California, then merge into 99S and exit Ming. Seems like a lot but saves you all the street lights on chester and some on ming
Problems I see. Can’t get on the 58 east from the Ming Ave on-ramp or get off at Ming Ave coming from hwy58 west. And no off ramp for Stockdale hwy for 99 NB. This is going to cause problems

Thank you for this excellent video! It's very sad to see in this day and age that our cities are still destroying themselves to build more huge freeways. I wonder what they could have done for Bakersfield's connectivity by spending all that money on vastly improving public transit options, especially considering the high speed rail project is well under construction. Here's hoping that Bakersfield realizes its mistake sooner than later.

The freeway never should have been built. But if they added some ramps it would destroy more homes and buisnesses and increase traffic in that area. We should be spending this money on alternative methods of travel.
Kaiser Perm only needs people to drive there, so off-ramp only. They don't need an on-ramp to get away from Kaiser Perm because once you enter Kaiser, the "Doctors" make sure you never leave.

Hopefully by the end of 2023; although, I'm starting to doubt it now.
I'm actually thrilled with this update on the Centennial Project; it obviously won't be too much longer and the corridor will be up and running?
