Almost no place to work, tight spaces where screws are absolutely insane to reach, the horror! Thanks anyway, I like your videos very much. Just finished this thanks to Robert’s directions. Took way longer than I thought because I kept dropping washers and bolts.
I did this job because I got the compressor bypass valve from ipd and they said you didn’t have to take the turbo off the car. Yeah right! Maybe if you are a fairy and your hands are nimble toothpicks.
Getting the clamp off was a detail I missed and should have watched more closely (took me a while to figure out what was going on).

old video but yer still so valid on my v70 2003! bought a new daily, because my s60 didnt want to run on all 5 anymore (checked coil, injectors, plugs) so that this will help me install a new 19t turbo. Dont like installing new parts when they dont give anything back extra back so... 19t turbo

Working on a Saab 9-3 Turbo swap right now... really wish I had a tutorial like this to watch! Think everything is alright, except I can't get some exhaust manifold bolts to line up with the holes on the turbo... I've learned so much from you though, feel like I'll be able to get it done. But man, working on a Saabs is nothing like working on a Volvo!

The wastegate bias is something you wont find in manuals, thats lots of experence.

just bought myself a manual 98 S70 myself, no rust on the frame or body at 266k km(160k miles), im up in canada too so its clearly been undercoated religiously let alone maintained. up untill i got a hold of it, its been serviced by volvo always. idk if i can afford that lvl of attention.
gonna be coming back here often to make sure this thing stays as mint as it is. first thing i did was install a 10" touchscreen audio deck with front n back cams ahaha, now im looking at replacing the exhaust gasket, pretty sure the seal aint right. i know this car has a model that comes with a turbo, like yours does here as your replacing it. they obv did have models 5 speed manual without a turbo, like mine... since you have experience with this car and turbos.... idk how different mine is to yours space wise... im sure you can see where im going with his ahaha, can i install a turbo into mine?? 🙈😅. im in school currently for automotive technician, but still very green. i have a lot of friends thatd love to help me with this and anything else who are licensed, figured id ask here in case i get them hyped up for an expensive?painstakingly difficult mission. end up explaining why i dont want to cut a hole in my hood LOL

Nope. Easier than the drivers side, just pull the 2 currier bolts and it will come right out.
Robert- Sadly, the Volvo I tried to pull the engine on is AWD (XC70). Due to the front differential, looks like you have to drop the whole subframe. You might want to stress that XC's make life more difficult. But I enjoy your videos.
+Joe Sirico No, it is bolted to the transmission. The engine should come right out. Or you can pull the angle gear in about 30 minutes.

Another great vid Robert! I replaced my exhaust manifold + gaskets and all the turbo gaskets on my 99' V40 2.0T a few months back. I had some issues with the oil drain pipe and seating the o-ring. There just wasn't enough clearance to undo the hex bolts on the drain pipe flange, so I wasn't able to reposition the o-ring properly. Now that i've seen you separate the turbo I might give it another go, at least I won't have to remove the exhaust housing. How did you go for clearance? looks like the 850 has more room that my V40.

shww-this is the ONLY DIY video I was able to find for the R&R turbo for an 2003 XC70. Even with this video-this was the most difficult part I've ever pulled off a car. Very tight area. If you think you can keep track of the locations for the lines, Ie vacuum, coolant etc. you better think again. There are a lot of lines to keep track of. Take this guys advice and label them AS you TAKE OFF. that's my tid-bit. Good Luck! there is a reason why they charge you well over a thousand bucks to do it for you. Oh and that doesn't include the $1500 for the part itself.. :(

I've been looking at new turbo online and they all seem to come with the flange connection to the exhaust, though on your video it looks like only the actual turbo was replaced. Is it difficult to get the exhaust side off and does it require its own gasket? thanks for your time! great info as always

Hello Robert. Short of pulling the turbo out, how can i determine what type of turbo my 2000 S70 GLT has? I know that it is a light pressure turbo but am stumped when it comes to the "13G, 13T, 15G, 16T, 18T, 19T, 20T, 22T" types. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you sir, you're videos have helped me keep my Volvo running like a champ!
Only the 13G and the 13T are low pressure. You can look on the tag.
you can use brake cleaner to clean off the turbo if it's dirty and full of crud. I'm assuming this is one you got out of the salvage yard.

Robert DIY Thanks for great videos! I have a 2004 V70 2.4D. Have noticed a new whistling metallic sound when accelerating softly. The whistle / rattle sound is heard the strongest in the left side. My mechanic checked all of the tubing and wacum hoses and found that the sound comes from the turbo it self. He says it could be because of wear? The car performs normally and no indication from the computer related to the turbo - pressure etc. Does it sound as a dying turbo to you?

Hi Robert, My son and I are getting ready to do this project on his 1998 S70 GLT. Somehow he got a crack in the coolant inlet section and the car just sprays coolant when the system is brought up to pressure. A couple of questions if you have the time...
From my research it seems there is a difference in the turbo units used in the 97/98 models and those in the 99 and up. Is this correct? Do I need to be careful which replacement I order? I am considering the Dorman 667220. Do you know if this will work or would you recommend something else?

Probably the drain line. Did you replace the PCV yet? Does it build boost good?
I just changed the pcv over the weekend. turbo isn't leaking. it's the power steering line. so I refilled with power steering fluid with stop leak. so far no leaks anymore. we'll see how it holds up. going to the junkyard tomorrow hopefully grab the lines off a 99 s70 they have there.

well I went out and checked the puddle that it leaked and it was steering fluid. I put the car on ramps and looked around. cam seal is good and oil drain tube wasn't wet or leaking. easy fix luckily lol this vid is still very helpful

I have 1998 V70 turbo 2.0l automatic
On this model as I where told by my mechanic there is no oil heather so we rule out that possibility and we change head gasket so I think maybe turbo is the main reason?I need to wash out the engine as per shown on one of your video and if I still have this oil problem what should I door check further?Tnx in advance
What is the problem? Oil getting into coolant or coolant into oil? I really doubt that the turbo will mix fluids.
i have an obx downpipe that i would like to put on but i need to switch housings what would you say is the easiest way to change exhaust housings without removing the turbo if possible.

the car does roll in neutral until I turn it to the right of the left and then it grabs I do not know if the transmission has been serviced since how I just got the vehicle and yes the check engine light is on

i have steel gaskets for the turbo on my 99 s70, is there a special way they are supposed to go on? i notice they have some raised surfaces on the inner diameter of the gasket is why i ask

Rob I took my 1992 Volvo 940 turbo out of storage, lost 3 quarts of oil, turbocharger is so hot it's steaming white smoke, handheld temp reader shows 500-790 degrees on turbo, is the turbo bad? Have not had chance to disassemble... thanks love your videos!

Did you determine whether the turbo or the PTC was the source of the oil burn? My turbo is soaked in oil, blue smoke out tailpipe. Concensus I've gotten is 50-50 excessive blow-by or failed turbo seal. Any way to be sure other than swapping the turbo?
Bad NEW valve stem seals. Victor Reinz, it use to leak less.

Is it best to switch out the whole turbo unit with a replacement or is simply rebuilding the old one the normal solution? I have bogged down acceleration when starting and occassional billowing white smoke. Im considering doing this job as it looks straight forward. Thanks in advance!
A new turbo should be VSR balanced and is better than taking a turbo apart and rebuilding it. Rebuilding a turbo is fine as long as it is done correctly.

Robert, I want to swap my 98 stock turbo to angle flange housing (the exhaust system I got has an angle DP, plus I can swap to K24, etc later). Can the housing be swawpped without removing the center cartridge or compressor housing?

Rob, i have a 2,5tdi (d5252t) 850. it recently started ticking a bit (like a bearing is going bad). it only smokes when starting the engine, after that its just a bit of soot (diesel) on acceleration. could it be the turbo going bad? or could it be something else?

I'm in Australia, Volvo here adds 300+ per cent to everything, so I order from the states, no 2=3 days...I want to know can I check the Tag or Vin to fond out beforew stripping everything down???

+Robert DIY, Considering the amount of time & effort put into removing a turbo, it would be pointless to assume that just because the cartridge spins freely that, "the turbo is ok". For example, if you truly have oil bypassing from the exhaust manifold, then your valve guide seals are worn out. Also, these valve guides wear out sooner than the intake side, because the exhaust runs hotter than the intake side. However, considering that your replacement turbo came from a salvage yard, at minimal, perform a teardown inspection & probably a rebuild. I recall my last rebuild kit being around $150.00
The turbo was fine. The one year old valve stem seals were bad.
Watched it twice , the tag appears to be hidden by piping and ancillaries until the turbo is removed. So how do I get a replacement to have ready to put on when the old unit is removed? or am I supposed to wait a couple of weeks with the engine bay disassembled for the replacement toturn up?
Takes 2 days to get a turbo. Is the car a T5 or LPT?

I just took it to a local shop someone had put a 98 rear end in this is it all wheel drive is that compatible they seem to think that it's in the drivetrain what is your thought the reason I think it's a 98 rear end is because when I went to replace the rear pads what I got for the 99 were not correct and they figured it out that they were in 98 again what is your thought

Hello Robert! Real easy for me to follow your video, not sure where some of this criticism comes from... anyway, I owned a '95 850 turbo wagon about 15 years ago which was great until the transmission went, and shortly after having it completely rebuilt the turbo started smoking. This all occurred around 160,000 miles if I recall correctly.
My question is, I'm in the market for a '01 or newer V70 and I didn't know if the newer models are inherently problematic like my 850 was. My guess is yes, but I wanted your prospective. Also, I've been checking out the t5 models. I understand that the turbos on these are "higher pressure" , but are they just as prone to failure as the "low pressure" ones are?. Is there anything I should look for on a '01 v70 with around 170000 miles? I'm the type who doesn't mind replacing a turbo or even a Transmission if I absolutely had to, but I don't want to invest in a car today and be fixing things next week either.
Even tough my car will soon be on it's 3rd transmission, the ones installed in the pre-2000 cars are very good and tough. Just don't overheat them or leave bad / burnt fluid in them. I don't like the 2000 - 2003 transmissions.

What about installing a turbo on a non turbo s70? Would you think it to be worth it, i plan on investing in this car, doing timing belt and pcv etc, because its so clean for a 90s car but you think it would be worth it or try and sell and get a turbo version? It only has 150k miles
+XTheDelimanX I would NOT try to turbo a NA S70. It's possible but I have no ideal of all the things you would need to be concerned with. I would find a turbo car. Values are pretty much the same.

TheDeliman I feel you man when I take my baby(00 s70 slowerd😆) to meets shes unique since its a base N/A model but youd have to reinforce the internals for a turbo application. But don't sell her(or him) because you hardly see s70's(96-01) N/A models anynore
Honestly the thing that makes the volvos good for 300+k km (dunno what that is in miles, go head and convert it), is the forged iron connecting rods. its the only difference from NA to turbo. OTHERWISE, ITS ALL CAST ALUMINUM ENGINE PARTS.
Robert, what about installing all the turbo from an 850 t-5 onto a different 850 motor without turbo? Would this be as simple as switching parts and computer components, or not worth the time?
Hey Robert, my V70 AWD has the red triangle warning light, and it's making a weird metallic sound, I'm confident in my mechanical knowledge, but I'm worried about all the vacuum lines, also. (It's a 2001) if it ends up being a bad turbo is it still the same process?

It pretty much says that if its amber pull over soon, If its red pull over ASAP and stop driving, is there any way you can confirm that its the turbo for me? The sound seems to be coming from it and the intake part of the turbo before it compresses the air has oil buildup, is this a fullproof sign that it's blown? I have everything disconnected as of right now, just haven't pulled the turbo yet, any tips when it comes to removing it from the downpipe and manifold?
Also, i have not disconected the oil and coolant lines.
I am blowing no smoke and have no shaft plat whatsoever

Hey Robert, I got a difficult question. A buddy and I did some research and roughly think my Volvo has the 15G version turbo, Could it be possible to swap the core to a 16T and use my old wastegate and intake/exhaust flanges? Or would I need to swap the wastegate as well. Thanks

Robert, I have a 01 v70 T5, it has good power up to about 45mph then it's a struggle to get to interstate speed. I'm pretty good at turning wrenches, what's the best video u got to help out or let me know what u think

Hi Robert, question about this, I am finding that the T5 turbo is more readily available and better priced than the GLT turbo for the 2.4L. They way you took this turbo out of the car, do you know if it is possible to plug the T5 turbo into the exhaust side of the 2.4L turbo, or will there be dimensional issues doing this? Will the oil and coolant lines still line up correctly? I am looking for an affordable fix to the leaking oil issue I am having on mine.
I find both easy. The 15G turbo is larger and may damage the engine if used instead of the 13x turbo. Yes, they will bolt right in. They have the same CHRA.

Robert Diy I have a problem with my front end while turning to the right or left once I start to move eventually it'll grab like the brake is locking up and will not roll unless under power and that's when it grabs don't know what's going on took the break caliper off and cleaned with sand paper with the pads fit and grease them thinking maybe that they were grabbing that way don't know what's going on any suggestions I have used your other videos doing heater core timing belt and other issues and really find them useful a reply would be greatly appreciated

Hey I have a 1998 volvo s70 that is blowing alot of white smoke. It is burning 20 dollars worth of oil with in two hours but coolant level is the same. I am sure its my turbo, and I am taking it out now i will rebuild it myself 1st time. The turbo has black oil smudge on the top and there is oil along the underside of the car. I think its leaking into the exhaust and the underside. Thought it was the headgasket but I doubt it now, car has 197000 miles on it. Do you think im spot on?

Robert DIY Thanks, hey i broke an oil line that you say blows oil to the front of the turbo. I think the line conected to what you called a PTC Valve. The oil line is thin and brittle. How do i fix that?

I have a 2005 Volvo XC70 with turbo. I have worked on cars before, replacing alternators, brakes, master cylinders, water pumps, etc. The turbo on this car (250,000 miles btw) is leaking oil. I have a couple questions. 1. How difficult is it to remove / replace this turbo? 2. How do I decide if I should try to rebuild it (cheaper way to go) or replace it? 3. Is this something that most shade tree mechanics can do?

Sure, but you'll be able to walk faster than the car will drive.

My 1999 volvo s70 t5 has a different heat shield, with the third bolt facing the firewall... That third bolt was too corroded/rounded for the normal 12mm, a crescent wrench's movement and rounded head made it also round the head off, filing one side down to 11mm and trying a 11mm wrench fit nicely, but also rounded off, and the bolt head is harder than my vice grip...(all this after I sprayed it with PBblaster for reference). I'm thinking of just cutting around the bolt because the shield seems plenty stiff with just two of the bolts, but an angle grinder certainly won't fit, a dremel tool likely won't fit either unless you use the cutting wheel hanging out as far as possible(which is a desperate and risky move), and even then, the driver's side cut will still be impossible to do. A chisel and a dead blow hammer? Also can't bend it away because of the steel whatever line that the block side of the shield bends behind...
Does anybody have any suggestions?
may have to lower the subframe for more access.

It should be all good considering the new downpipe I am installing does not have a threaded hole for that bolt to go in anyway... There should be enough of the heat shield left to function, and if I notice the firewall getting visually warmer than it should, I'll bolt an extra aluminum plate to it or something..., and deal with the fact there will be a little less protection from catastrophic turbo failure.

My turbo is abnormally loud and I can smell/feel exaust coming from it. Lots of soot on parts directly next to it. Is there a gasket, seal, or diaphragm that typically breaks down on the turbo that needs to be replaced? I have a 99 volvo s70. If anyone has any insight or ideas, please share.
Sounds like the turbo is dying.
Hi Robert. im having issues with the eliectrical system on my s70. its doing all kinds of things like it has a mind of its own.some times it will start and then others it acts like a dead battery. the battery is fine as it is brand new. anyhelp would be great

Dear Robert, I have recently purchased a 1998 s70 non turbo and I am planning on doing a custom build and put my own turbo on my car but not having much luck finding performance parts and I don't want to swap my engine or buy a turbo version of my car any advice would seriously help

hey Robert if I remove the drive shaft will the front and the rear leak fluid and if so what can I do to stop it that is my plan to remove the drive shaft I'm hoping that will cure the problem I did check the tires they are all from the same manufacturer in the same size the only difference is in the rear for some reason somebody put on rain tires but the wear is the same on all the treads. it is that bad that I have to disconnect the all wheel drive driveshaft i can drive down the road 70 80 miles an hour no problem straight but at low speed having to turn hard when I'm trying to park the vehicle or what not yes it binds right up so my question to you is once I remove the driveshaft do I have to do anything special to it not knowing if it's going to leak fluid or not I had watched a video on how to remove the drive shaft we almost had it out at one point and had a hard time trying to separate it from the rear disconnected the front first and not the rear so was I doing something wrong I appreciate all your help let me know thank you again
No fluid will leak.
Remove the shaft and see what happens.
While checking the intercooler piping today on my 95 850 turbo I found small particles of what looks like metal inside the piping. What do you think I should do? New turbo?
Is the turbo still working good?

hey Robert! what's the best way to deal with a blown turbo, can't find one at the scrap yard, I see cartridges brand new on eBay, or for a lot cheaper I see turbo rebuild kits. what do you think I should do? I'm very capable as a mechanic I'm just not 100% sure about balancing issues when I rebuild a turbo. it's that 2006 s 80, I can hear the turbo scratching a little bit in there sometimes and of course its billowing smoke.
+Kyle Dupont I'm not sure about the reliability of the cheap ones you see on eBay. There are guys that rebuild them and you can rebuild them yourself. If you pull and install the compressor wheel in the same orientation that it came off, it's suppose to be balanced. I recently heard of a company that can check the balancing of it but a lot of people don't worry about it if they are sure they put it back on the way it come apart.

Did you clean the turbo with water? Im trying to figure out the best way to clean my used turbo before I install it.
Water should not hurt it, it's probably oily, will likely need a degreaser like OIl Eater.

Hello, I'm upgrading from a 12t to a 16t but am unsure if the 16t will fit in the 12t turbine housing? (Correct me if I'm wrong. The part on the exhaust manifold is the turbine housing?) will it fit?

Can a broken turbo cause metal to enter the oil ?

the bolts that hold the lines on have holes in them for fluid to pass threw how do i make sure they are lined up with the hoses so it stops spewing fluid everywhere?

Robert DIY do all the hoses have the copper washers or just the one on the back of the turbo? I think that is my problem. I didn't notice the washers, thank you!
All connections have 2 washers.
Wouldnt the turbine be oily?
Maybe the seals are bad on the compressor side and thats why its burning the oil?

+Robert DIY would you drop the oil pan and just pull the piston to change it out after you check the bore?
I meant bad piston oil seal. piston will have to come out.
