- First Ride: 2022 Moto Morini X-CAPE 649 4K
This is a video of my short test ride of the new 2022 Moto Morini X-CAPE 649. Moto Morini have been around since the 1930's making bikes in Bologna. Like so many, they have fallen on hard times more than once and a few years ago, they were revived following an acquisition by the Zhongneng Vehicle Group.
The full history is here:
motomorini.eu/company/history...
This is the first bike to launch since then, and is based on a 649cc parallel twin derived from the Kawasaki ER6-n/Versys 650. If you want to know more and the full specifications, they are here:
motomorini.eu/bike/x-cape/?la...
This is the demo bike from 2 Wheel Nation in Barnsley, UK:

At over 220kg and making 58hp, I thought it would be a bike that looked better than it would go. I was wrong. I quite enjoyed it and I'll be back for another go, to see what it's like on the trails!
I hope this has been interesting and useful. Thanks for watching.

Great bike, ive had use of one for 6 days at the Isle of Man Southern 100 and its been ridiculous fun, teeny bit heavy but an absolute blast.
Yup, it could do with losing a few kilos, but for the price I think they are great value. They’ve done a top job on the styling too.
I liked your review so much I decide to go to 2 wheel nation to ride it !......and I liked it so much I bought one in anthracite !
I was thier first Moto Morini X-cape customer apparently 👍🏻
To be fair I'd made my mind up after 20 minutes !
What a great bunch of guys too !
Awesome! It’s not the easiest place to find, but as you say, great folks. I expect my commission cheque is in the post 🤣
What swayed you to buy the bike, I’ve been very interested but worried about resale value, dealer network and after service.
@@cooky6660 It was just a great bike to ride ! Felt nimble with enough power for what I use it for , as for resale value why worry the bikes there to enjoy ! Not leave in the garage worrying about how many miles are on it ! It seems to be the bike the Versys should have become ....with a comfortable seat ! Go try one I think you'll be surprised!
@@themoog3889 out of curiosity, may I ask what fuel economy you’re getting? I couldn’t see any published figures, and will do some measurements on Thursday when I take one out for the day, but with the recent, unprecedented fuel price hikes, and a 5000 mile trip to Romania planned for next month, I’m wondering if I should try something different. I get mid-40’s mpg out of my GS, so would need 120gal/600l for the trip. At 60p+ more a litre than before, I’m now wondering if it might be an interesting experiment. Even mid 60’s to the gallon would be 80gal/400l, and at £2 a litre, that 200l less is a £400 saving.
@@PeakMotorcycles No idea ! Not got the bike yet ! If its anything like the Versys I get 60+ to the gallon depending on conditions .....only time will tell !
That’s a sweet looking bike!
In a three-bike scenario, this would be a tidy fit between the CRF300 and the R1250GS.
I envision my three-bike scenario with the CRF300 Rally on the light end, either a R.E. Himalayan, a Tenere’ 700, or a Norden 901 in the middle, and either the R1250GS or the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally on the heavy end.
The only trouble is, I want them all.
Thanks for another informative and interesting review.
#firstworldproblems 🤣 and such a great problem to have. Though I think the Himalayan is more like the CRF, I know it’s heavier, but price, power etc. is a closer match than to the T7 or Norden. Good luck!
Hopefully test one soon! Lets see if I come to the same conclusions but your review is very similar to another I watched.
I have a couple more videos coming out in the next week or so from a much longer test, including a rocky trail ride.
Do you know what Andre, I do agree with you this bike looks very good indeed. Typical Italian, very pleasing to look at. For less than 8grand getting a Kawa engine, Brembo breaks, Marzocchi suspension, TFT screen, LED lights, etc....quite impressive. For the style of riding I'm doing definitely underpowered(TBH I think the same for Africa Twin too haha) but for an everyday little run around this bike could do. Thanks for the review, it was a good watch 🙂
Yes, absolutely. It’s short on power compared to the premium adventure bikes, but other than that, it does a lot of what my GS does, but I could have 2.5 of these for 1 GS… or both. Both would do 🤣
I think you can tweak it to 70bhp with a map on ecu 😉
@@jasonstevens5286Yes it is Possible,a dealer her in Germany offers a self-made new mapping with 70 hp.And with better engine culture.
At 232kg wet weight it is quite lardy but difficult to criticise it for that at its price.
Absolutely, but I’m also finding that how weight is carried is as important as how much. Also how often you’d be picking it up. I hardly drop my GS at all these days!
@@PeakMotorcycles 🤣
Nice video and great bike! Could you please tell me which helmet you are wearing during the test? Thanks in advance
Hi Simone, it’s an LS2 Explorer Carbon. Not sure where you are, but if in the UK, it’s this: www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/525885
Love this bike. Reminds me of the Africa twin in a way. Would I trust it's reliability? Something Honda should do to bridge the gap between the 300l crf and the Africa twin. I'll be watching this tonight ☺
On the whole I don’t think there’s really any bad bikes these days, and the warranties reflect that, but having a local dealer, with access to parts might be the difference. Other than the styling, I’m not sure there’s much new and untested here if that gives any reassurance. Only time will tell, but I think it looks great and goes well enough for the price point.
@@PeakMotorcycles Yes there are bad bikes. Had one KTM 1290 adventure. Spent most of the warranty period at dealership
Horrific. Check out McN article on the new duke 1290. I love the bikes. The bikes are just amazing To ride, head n shoulders above the rest. Such a shame to be dogged with so many issues.
@@DaveDayve I take that back then 🤣. Sounds like you had a rough time. Did it work out? I know a few folks with various 1290’s who love them (and ridicule my 1250GS!) but I guess when they have ongoing problems, it’s painful.
Good review
Btw Which will be better buy sujuki v strom 650xt of xcafe 650x
See my answer on the other comment 😉
Looks good at the price, think it's Suzuki v strome sort of money probably a good head to head bud👍🏻
It’s about £1000 cheaper than the V-Strom 650 in the UK and I think it looks better. To me at least! (Apologies to V-Strom 650 owners!)
Seriously thinking about one of these . Will parts be a problem the availability of them ? , but that could be said for most manufacturers at the moment. Need to get over there and have a test ride. Is it a two year warranty?
It is a 2 year warranty, otherwise… unknown for spares, but I’m sure the dealer can tell you. The engine’s tried and tested in Kwak form, so I’m sure service parts for the engine are readily available. If you can get there to do a test ride, see how you get on.
Which bike is more pokey the cb 500 x or the morini as the morini is a bigger engine more torque and bigger kw out put but it is 34 pound more heavier as i have a cb and looking for a upgrade is this going to more fun the cb 500 x
I’d say the Morini, but if you can, see if you can test ride one. I’ve ridden the 500x but I guess much less than you, so your opinion on the comparative pokeyness is more valid than mine.
Very very very beautiful bike!!! Will you recommand this beauty as a first moto to a beginner!?? Thinking about cb500x or the Vstrom 650xt, but this one is a such a nice one for a good price!!! Hello from Serbia 🇷🇸✌️
Greetings to Serbia! I guess it depends on what you need it for, and how long your legs are! I think this looks better than the other two, but it might come down to dealer and parts availability. Here, Honda and Kawasaki dealers are common. Moto Morini less so. I’m fortunate that I have one near by, but not everyone is. If you can, see if you can test ride all 3 and pick the one you like the best!
@@PeakMotorcycles thank you, l am 1.83cm tall with 110kg (little beast 🤪) I live at Belgrade so the main Daeler for Suzuki do also Moto Morini but in Serbia no test bikes 😟
@@svaralen do they have one you can sit on? You may find that the 500x and 650xt feel a little small. (I’m 1m85 and the Moto Morini feels like a proper bike to me)
@@PeakMotorcycles will go to seat on it next week and see 😎 did you try duo with the x cape!?
Great video, thanks sharing your test drive.
I'm very interested in this bike! Is there anyone that has feedback from confort for the passenger? It's mandatory for me.
Thanks!
Hi, I’ll leave that response to someone else who has tried it. I hope someone has!
As it has a 19inch front , 58HP , 223kg wet it’s competition is :
1. Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT
2. Honda NC750 X
3. Triumph 850 Tiger ( maybe )
Thanks! Definitely the V-Strom and the NC750X, though the Tiger is almost a 900cc, makes 84bhp and is £2000 more in the UK, so perhaps the class above?
@@PeakMotorcycles yes 👍 this is true , just through I would throw it in for shits and giggles 😂😂😂 . But a nice looking bike ( unfortunately made in China) Australia doesn’t have a Moto Marini importer . I test road a few bikes at our annual Tourtech festival last weekend, a good mix of on and off road test track , tested the Pan America, Husky 901 Norden and a African twin 1100 - non DCT . The Harley was a big heavy lump. And the 901 just didn’t feel quality made and look 👀. I can tell the Chinese influence in KTM now ( it’s all about profit and not quality by the looks of things )
The African twin was a beautifully built bike , heaps of grunt and you can see the pride the Japanese take in quality control.
@@itsallabouttheridekeepingi4449 I wish they could make the AT for under 200kg. Actually, any well made middleweight adventure bike. I'd happily give up some electronics for better suspension, a diet T7, or a new Transalp 850 at 180-190kg wet with 70-90hp would be perfect. Unfortunately no one is making the perfect bike for me yet, but maybe one will turn up one day. The china thing is what it is, and I'm wondering if there is a similar pattern with what happened to the UK motorcycle industry in the 1970's where the Japanese bikes were rubbish and rusted, until they sorted that out, and then pretty much every UK manufacturer went bust in 10 years selling 1950's technology 20 years too late. India and China have their own political challenges and quality control to sort out. If they do, then I think some of the other manufacturers will have to take note to survive. The AT is assembled in Japan, but I've no idea where all the parts come from. I guess from wherever Honda can source them to the right quality and at the lowest cost...
@@PeakMotorcycles, agree with what happened in the 70,s . I’m not interested in tech ( ABS is about my limit- and that’s only for wet asphalt) and maybe 🤔 cruise control for our LONG Australian outback miles ☝️. I reckon the perfect unicorn 🦄 bike is 400cc , 6 speed , EFI ,ABS switchable, around 45HP long travel suspension 21/18 wheels ( basically a 400cc CRF Rally .no more than 150KG wet can cruise on road 75 no worries, and fantastic off road ability. THE PERFECT BIKE , the Frantic 500 comes close .
""designed and developed in Morini’s factory in Italy, it’s built in China" MCN
It is. Such is the way of things these days. And it’s Chinese owned.
