Respect to you mate for keeping any tribalism out of things. All clubs deserve respect, whatever their status. Modern football fans fail to appreciate the history and heritage of clubs like Everton, Sunderland, Preston etc but they should. Football has been around long before the shiny era of the Premier league. In fact it could be argued for more than half their existence, Liverpool were viewed as the second club in Merseyside but their excellent record of success over the last 50 years or so and Everton's decline, means that history is forgotten. It should not.
Loved the granny giving the lecture! Yeah, one thing Everton don't have and I bloody admire them for it is the glitz. At LFC, we are a bit more upmarket, but you def lose the common touch. I am gutted for them they're likely to leave Goodison. What a great ground and they are a great club, and easily my second fave team.
Goodison is a tired old stadium now but has some interesting history. Without it Liverpool FC may never have come into existence. Everton played first on Stanley Park (between Anfield and Goodison) and then moved into Anfield. After winning the Championship in 1892 (there was only one Division) an argument broke out, allegedly over increased rent, and Everton left after buying the land that became Goodison. The remaining players and staff stayed at Anfield and called themselves Liverpool (they originally wanted to be called Everton Athletic but the FA would'nt permit it). Goodison was the first purpose built ground in England (Celtic did it first in Scotland) and the first to have four double decker stands, the first to have covered dugouts in England and the first to have undersoil heating. Interestingly, the first time goal nets were used in the world was when engineer John Alexander Brodie first trialled goal nets in Stanley Park in 1890. Also, Liverpool's first team colours in 1892 was blue and Everton played in red.
