The book you see briefly is Rose Walker, whom is a major character in Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series "The Sandman". She is the granddaughter of Unity Kinkaid, a woman who had kept one of The Dreaming's powerful entities captive for decades. When Unity died, the entity escaped and impregnated Rose's mother in the real world. Rose is therefore a dream vortex, a powerful being capable of affecting and being affected by dreams and desires. Rose's story revolves around her discovery of her heritage and her quest to find and capture the escaped entities and bring them back to the Dreaming. Along the way, she encounters various characters, both from the Dreaming and from the real world, and becomes embroiled in their own stories and conflicts.
