🔧 Supplies Used in This Video:
    Elgato Video Capture Card: amzn.to/47w3Jfj
⚙️ Choosing the Right Hi8 or 8mm Camcorder:
To find the perfect camcorder for your transfer, head over to eBay and search for "Hi8 camcorder" or "8mm camcorder" depending on the format you have. WARNING... 8mm tapes do not have backward compatibility with Hi8 cameras, so be careful. If you have both formats you'll need to search "digital 8 camcorders". Digital 8 will play both Video8 and Hi8 tapes. Ensure the camera you buy is in good working condition, they are old.

Your MacBook Pro DOES have USB ports, they just happen to be USB C/Thunderbolt 3. You just need a USB A to USB C adapter. There are also USB C capture devices so you don't need an adapter. Also, some HI8 recorders also have FireWire output, so you can also go that way and capture your footage digitally, but you'll need several adapters to do that. You'll need a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, a Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire 800 adapter, and a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 4pin cable. If you have an Apple Thunderbolt Display, you don't need any adapters, as that display has a FireWire 800 input, and you would just need a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 4 pin cable.

I never thought of it that way, but yes that's true. I've converted using firewire, it's just not as easy. Better quality but I didn't think it was as easy.

The problem is finding the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter. The adapter is too expensive. People are selling them at ridiculous prices. I have been searching for days in the UK and can't find anything. If I do find something, it's either too expensive. Really stuck. @KeepinHomeUp

@@moseedat $50 on Amazon , not exactly cheap, used to be $40 from Apple, but cmon, not unobtainable either.

Hello, thank you for the information. Unfortunately, the product is not available for shipping from the "US Amazon" to the UK. I have searched the internet and found that it is out of stock in the UK. eBay sellers are offering the cable at exorbitant prices, with some listings reaching £150. I will keep searching just incase I get lucky to stumbled across one.

Thanks for this video!! Question, if after, or any time, you are transferring it over, can you edit out any bad areas of the recording? Thanks!

    • @KeepinHomeUp
      @KeepinHomeUp  6 місяців тому

Editing is super limited. You can only trim the front and back. Any more than that you would need to pull it into an editing software like imovie, final cut pro, Premiere Pro or something like that.

Thank you for explaining about the A/V port on the camera. My handycam has this & some tutorials don't explain it.

    Hello,
I am experiencing an issue when attempting to connect my camcorder to the computed. While the video is being displayed, there is no audio. I have followed the same connection method as you have, but I am still encountering this problem. Could you please provide some insight into what might be causing this issue?
    Thank you for your assistance.

@@waveyave I got mines to work by playing around with the connection. Try putting only a little but of the cable inside the female hole. That worked for me.

Great tutorial! I have the Sony Handycam Vision CCD-TRV608 560x digital zoom and it works perfectly. However the USB streaming device it came with is not recognized by my computer there are no drivers available any longer on Sony website as this model was discontinued. No matter what we try the laptop won't recognize the camera attachment? I'm going to try your method however I'm nervous as I've already purchased Video converters from other brands and they DO NOT work with my camcorder. No matter what we do the devices will not detect the camcorder. We have hp laptop with fire connection ports and usb ports. Hopefully they take the elgato back if it doesn't work. Could you please add a link to your 3.5 mm male RCA cable as mine only came with the yellow and black connectors to the AV out port. I've since ordered a female S video out connector as my husband thinks that might help IDK?

You could also test it before you buy the elgato. Do you have a TV that has RCA inputs. Use the RCA cable you have, plug it into the camera then into the TV inputs. If it shows up on your TV I'll bet there's a good chance it shows up on your computer. The Elgato is by far the best trasfer product I've purchased. I have also purchased several that do not work.

Yellow and black is all you really need. One for audio and one for video. The audio is usually mono anyway. Plug the black into the red or white on the elgato. Doesn't matter which one.

Thanks so much for feedback and information on links. I ended up locating the stereo one my camera came with hiding in plain sight in my camera bag LOL. I ended up purchasing the DigitNow video capture device similar to the Elgato but half the price and it can use other programs like OBS, Windows capture, Photoshop capture, etc. and I can adjust to 720 or 1080 which is clearer. Now I'm just struggling with sound issues on the OBS bc it keeps echoing sound. Great while recording sounds normal then saved file is HUGE echo. I'm sure I'll figure that out eventually. Thanks again so much for responding and advice.@@KeepinHomeUp
