My DIY Cutting Table and Pressing Station

- Welcome back to another Sew Along Sunday! Since we just finished a sew along, today is a kind of tutorial. Instead of sewing, however, today we are talking about how I made my cutting table and pressing station. Leave any questions below!

Items used for my cutting station:
I built two of these units and then just push them together (its easier to move them around with they are not connected). Each unit consists of the following:
Kallax Unit on Casters (my casters were from IKEA, but I don’t see them on the site now. You can buy casters from the hardware store, though): KALLAX Shelf unit with 4 inserts, white, 30 3/8x57 7/8" - IKEA
This Linnmon Table Top was attached to the top of the Kallax with brackets and hollow door screws: LINNMON Tabletop, white, 78 3/4x23 5/8" - IKEA
My cutting mat is on top and is from this site: Quilting Rulers by Quilter's Rule International | Waterford Wisconsin Mine is the 36x68” square grid (full size including the border is larger), but you can get any number of sizes.
My Kallax boxes are from here: DRÖNA Box, black, 13x15x13" - IKEA
Items for my Pressing Station:
I bought this IKEA kitchen island cart: FÖRHÖJA Kitchen cart, birch - IKEA . Before attaching the top, I wrapped it in batting and cotton duck fabric that I secured with a staple gun, then I attached it per the IKEA instructions.

Years ago, my husband gave me his huge monster size lighted drafting table that we had moved from house to house over the years. I believe it was made in the 1970's! It has a foot pedal that hydraulically moves the table up and down as I need it and I use the light feature often to modify patterns and match fabrics. I wouldn't trade it for gold! Often times you can find these at school or college auctions as engineering drawing classes are all digital now. I love the portability of yours, Whitney. Very user friendly!

Thanks for the tour! I had a carpenter friend build me a rectangle that fits over my regular ironing board, so have a good amount of ironing space too. You’re the first sewing blogger I’ve heard mention the chances that dye from any ironing board cover transfer to your project. I’ve seen it happen, and have always had a plain ironing board cover. Kudos. And I’ve paid more for irons as well, and love my $100 Wawak gravity fed iron, too. Quilting cotton or canvas are the only fabrics I’ll hike that up to a 5, I admit to a total love affair with a good iron. Worth its weight, for sure. Have only had 3 irons in my years of quilting/sewing (35?).
That iron totally changed my sewing life. It’s painful when I have to use a home iron now 😂.

I also used two kalax shelves. I’m 5’6” tall. So my husband mounted them on a sheet of plywood and added casters to the plywood bottom. The shelves just sit on the plywood. They are heavy enough they do not slide off. Then we used my old top from my cheap Joanns folding cutting table and the grid cutting mat sized 32” by 55”. Then I added some command hooks on one end to attach a few rulers. I have my cubes just like yours with drawers and doors one side and bins on the other. This was life changing in my sewing room! I have a small room, so the two units needed to be pushed together and the top just fit the size of the shelves with no overhang.

Good tutorial! Thank you! I think for me, I would do two layers of batting cut the size of the cart and then do a drawstring around the duck - like a regular ironing board and tying it tight so it can be removed for washing or replacing. This would be as easy as a 2 inch corner out of each corner, sewn like a box cushion, and then hemming a casing for the twine to go through. I also think I'd prefer one top over both cutting board cabinets.
The drawstring cover is a great idea!
Your review of the gravity fed iron couldn't have come at a better time! My husband had just told me to spend $100 for sewing items for my Christmas present - yay! I have ordered my new iron!

I have the same ironing set up with one exception. I hang my gravity feed iron from a medical IV pole which means I can easily move everything around :)

This was awesome! I love the ironing cart! I'm trying to figure out a fold out cutting table for my sewing room. It's too small for one the size that you have but thought if I could find a heavy enough base I could hinge two hollow wood table tops from IKEA so the top one could fold out and make double the space. This would save me from taking up the dining table every time I want to create something!
i have a table that folds down in half for cutting and one for ironing, they are narrow enough for my room, they move easily, so i can combine them if more space is needed. i have a towel down with a portable ironing board on it, it sits behind me so i can swivel around to press. am looking to buy a pressing mat, i'm sure i'd like that, but what i have works well

Haya. Great information thanku :) I had a bunch of wood in the garage & more recently made a makeshift cutting table for myself, I am tall & have issues with my back so I needed a taller table area to cut out on ect. . . I have always admired your iron, 1 day I might get me 1 :) May I say you look wonderful today (not that you do not all the time, of course you do. . .you know what I mean) :) Thanku for sharing. x

OMG! I am re-doing my sewing room and ordered Kallax units for my cutting table. My husband just assembled them this past weekend and my son-in-law will be attaching them together and putting the casters on. I chose 3 of the smaller units to be attached in a square C pattern but the top will be a rectangle. This will allow me to have leg room for a breakfast height stool when using the table for finer work or crafting. The IKEA table top wasn’t the right size so my handy son-in-law ordered it from Home Depot and will cut to size. The dilemma I had when trying to design one was that my sewing room is the front bedroom of our bungalow and hubby wants the room to look neat.... so we compromised that I would choose something that looks like a piece of furniture. Pick your battles, right? 😜After all, I was finally getting my dream sewing room 🥰 where I didn’t have to do stairs (due to pain from GBS). I racked my brain until my daughter suggested the Kallax for which I ordered drawers and cabinets for front and hallway facing sides, and a couple of the bins for the side unseen when not in the room 👍🏻Perfection! Now for my sewing table for serger and sewing machine....Do you have a video showing yours? I love your cutting and ironing stations. Thanks so much for sharing! Sending you 🤗❤️ from Canada.

It really is. I, too, had paid quite a bit more for my Rowenta (my iron before this one). However, I am so sold on this one from now on!
Such a great vlog. I do not like one bit my ironing board and will definitely make one like yours. Next up irons. Is there a way for the steam on your iron to always be on? I would like that as a feature. Soooooo important that you mentioned your hook going into a stud. My friend installed a fixture with a hook directly into the drywall in her ceiling. It took a few years but a crack formed that spanned the entire distance of her room. A very expensive repair was the result. Merry Christmas Whitney! 😘❤️🎄🌵
Yikes! That does sound expensive! You can definitely leave the water on for the steam and if you just press the button, it will give you continuous steam.
I was just on Ikea and they now have Casters. Alex Casters, 2" four screw holes, package of 4 for $11.00. Sounds reasonable to me.

Found this. Thank you. I just bought your iron from Wawak. I noticed in the manual there is quite a bit of maintenance to be done monthly such as the plunger & spring, fitting in the solenoid. Have you had any issues with those items? I think I’m going to make your ironing table too. Thanks
To be honest, I’ve never done any maintenance in the 7 years I’ve own it other than change out the resin in the tank. I dropped it once and my son had to fix it, but other than that, I use distilled water in it and it works great!
The Kallax units are indeed hollow - the outside pieces. They are like massive cardboard - corregation the middle.

When I showed my hubby your iron station he asked if I wouldn’t miss the length of an ironing board(like for slacks or maxis) and the narrow tip for necklines collars etc. how do you deal without those two typical ironing board functions? Thanks for sharing so much with us !
I still use an ironing board for my actual ironing. I use this just for my pressing. Having it all one size (as opposed to the narrowing of a regular board) is handier for ironing or pressing yardage and when I’m pressing longer items (slacks for example) or collars, I’m usually using a pressing tool!
@@TomKatStitchery makes perfect sense! Now, do you iron in a different room? My ironing board has been mult-functional and up permanently in my sewing room for years! Of course I change out the covers and so on. I guess in order to have a press

@@angienorman5974 my regular sewing machine is folded up and hanging on the back of our closet door. Any actual sewing I need to do, I just pull that down when I need to iron!
Great pressing station - this is what I'm looking at. Today my 2 month old gravity fed iron died - I'm just sick.

On the pressing table, I wonder if a layer of foil should be on the wood first, because of the steam. ??
I know some people that do do a layer of foil.
why did you use the cotton duck fabric for the iron table? Is it safer to use with a hot iron?
It’s just heavy duty and takes a lot of abuse (as well as high temps).

That is a lip pencil from Sephora (their brand) called animal instinct with MAC bad n bare over the top!
I struggle with the height of my serger and Coverstitch machines. Are your tables lower? Machines Recessed?
No. My serger and coverstitch machines sit on a regular table. I do have an adjustable chair to raise me up, but if I’m working at them for too long, my back feels it. I can sew all day long on my regular machine that’s recessed in a table, but the ones on the table will hurt.
@@TomKatStitchery Exactly - And my back is old! My son is working on lowering my table, or finding some solution. I am also a short girl. ( and getting shorter)
Is that a healing cutting mat, how big is it and how do I purchase it?
It is! Mine has a cutting grid of 36” x 68”, but they had a TON of options. I’ve had mine for about 7 years and I love it. It came from Quilter’s Rule ( quiltersrule.com )

It is 35.5".

What do you mean by visuals? I’m redoing some things in my sewing room so will filming an updated sewing room tour and will be talking about both of these again. I’d love to improve!
