On 11 July 1987, Diane Abbott made a speech at Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre. Just one month before, Abbott became the first Black female member of parliament when she was elected to represent Hackney North and Stoke Newington. The Labour MP's speech addressed the ongoing dispute in the Labour Party over the expulsion of activist Sharon Atkin, who had accused the party of racism.
On 23 April 2023, the Labour Party announced that Diane Abbott had been suspended as a Labour MP pending an investigation into a letter she wrote to the Observer newspaper on the subject of racism. Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has described her comments as anti-semitic after she likened anti-Jewish racism to prejudice experienced by "redheads".

She's not perfect, but who is. I hope that she will be given space to grow, learn and maybe even be reinstated.

@@jackbrown4130 True, but if anyone deserves forgiveness it's the woman that faced more racist abuse than all politicians put together, from bullying and taunting to threats of rape. To be honest your lack of recognition for this makes you part of the problem.
Again this isn't a race to the bottom. If you care about racism then your criticism of a black woman should be as important to you as your empathy for her after she's been through so much.
She should have known better I agree, but I argue that we all make mistakes and forgiveness is necessary.
