    Surprised you didn't explain that "brat" is an acronym for Bi-drive Recreational All- terrain Transport. Also "brat" was only an American market name. Was the "brumby" in Australia and last production year for that was 1993 and was the "MV" in the European markets.

      Thank you for the cool facts. Now I can research Subaru in other countries. Awesome and thanks again.

    Awesome car. Too bad rust has done a number on it. I hope the owners will restore it and keep it around.

    I'm a big fan of UTE's, specifically the El Camino. Will be adding the Brat to my list of favorite cars.

    Lmao @ the Jack Daniels bottle for overflow! My earliest memory of a Subaru was my Aunt's 78 Brat. My brother and I used to ride in the back seats when we were little.

    I love the Subaru brat since I was a kid. It looks like a radio controlled toy. I've owned 80's wagons and loved gutless 4wheeling. The WRX STI is my favorite pocket racer. I want to put a Brat body on built WRX running gear, wouldn't have take long to leave rusty Brat body parts everywhere. My 85 wagon had 2.8 million miles and still got 36 miles to the gallon! Subaru's last forever.

    Had two of these back in the 80's.. One first generation and one second generation. The first generation was way more fun than the second generation. It came with no power steering no power brakes manual transmission and buggy Wheels. Oh yeah and the jump seats. Off-roading it was a blast. Didn't need a whole lot of horsepower cuz it didn't weigh a whole lot of anything. The second generation was a whole lot nicer on the road. Had t tops, nicer seats just an all-around better vehicle. Why would anybody do any modifications they were perfect as they were. Well maybe a stereo.

    I have owned two a /978 and 1987. I loved the 1987 great in the snow. But they all rust out . Terrible rust problems

    I had an MY84 Subaru wagon (same mechanical platform essentially), and I did a bit of customisation to mine. Lift kit for a start, cutaway front guards, and I fitted the sporty coupe dash into mine (the standard dash in the wagons and little utes was pretty bland) - I suspect the dash in that one is a retrofit (unless the USA spec Brat was a lot different to the Aussie spec Brumby) - Subaru didn’t offer the sports dash in most markets in the AWD wagons and utes. The 4 headlight front the same - it was offered on the Leone coupe and the premium Touring wagon, but not the base models.
    But the rust concerns me. All Subaru vehicles were galvanised from the factory. Rust of the quantity and location of the featured one only happens here if they’re used on the beach. The bodies just don’t rush, unless they were involved in an accident (which disturbed the galvanising). We don’t salt our roads in winter, of course, but the little AWD Subies are a pretty robust bit of kit. Toss in an overdrive 5 speed transaxle and a 2 or 3 inch lift, and it’s surprising where the little things will go.

      I owned a 1983 touring wagon with three speed auto and digital dash. I'd probably still have it if it hadn't been comprehensively written off down in Tassie in '85.

    I owned 2 vw turbo diesel rabbit trucks, under powered, but fun to drive, easy to repair. Both trucks destroyed by rear end collision.
    One rear end on purpose accident at 50 mph, almost broke my neck
    I found a rust free 1979 two door rabbit, still own it. Fun to drive 50 mpg. No smog tests, no computers. Ac works. Not selling it

  • @bradfaubion3699
    @bradfaubion3699 5 місяців тому

    Not sure if it is mentioned farther down in the comments but that bracket you pointed out for the seats, is actually the bracket for the head rest for the rear facing seats. The seats were bolted on to a frame that was welded to the floor. The Brat also had seat belts (lap belt) back there as well. Bolted to the floor of the bed.

    As someone who just did head gaskets on my 86 Brat and just started it an hour ago (head was leaking oil and had a bent rod), it's always nice to see a new brat video since they're pretty rare!
